“Somebody must have kicked you around some”; what a great line! If you haven’t reacted to Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky”, you really should; you’ll love it ❤ Damn, he was so cool 😎
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That" and "American Girl"!!! Thanks for doing Refugee from his best album (imho) !!
One of MANY great songs. Lots more to hear like "American Girl, "Don't Do Me Like That", "Jammin' Me", "I Need To Know" just too name a few. Thanks Jay /Amber. You've got a deep rabbit hole to dive in here.😎
Love and respect to all the Heartbreakers past and present.... They were a supergroup. Missing Tom and the music, thanks for remembering them.... Peace and love to all, from your friendly neighbor from the north. 🙏❤️😎🇨🇦
Tom and Mike were a team... DAMN THE TORPEDOES was a great L.P. But, first Tom Petty and Heart Breaker's song I heard was "Need to Know" back in the the mid 70's.
this is from tom and the heartbreakers 3rd album, DAMN THE TORPEDOES, and it put them on the map. they had some success with earlier hits "breakdown", "american girl", and "listen to her heart" but DAMN was the LP that brought them to the national forefront. it is my favourite album of theirs and most every song is great! "don't do me like that", "here comes my girl", "louisiana rain", "even the losers" - all bangers! my most favourite song of tom's was from these sessions but didn't make it to the album. "casa dega" was the b-side of "don't do me like that" on 45 single. it's moody, plaintive, evocative, and drips of a mystical place and time - FANTASTIC ❤
Glad y’all liked it, this one’s a favorite, too. J, if you want another rocker from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, you gotta dig into “I Need to Know”. It surprised even me when I first saw the live version of it! I had only known him for lighter rock fare like “Breakdown”, “Free Fallin’” and “You Got Lucky”.
This song was EVERYWHERE back then. Damn The Torpedoes is his 3rd album, but it was the one to really rocket him to fame. Triple platinum within the first 12 months. "Don't Do Me Like That", "Here Comes My Girl" and "Even The Losers" also came off this album and all 4 hit top 10.
I especially like Tom's earlier songs, they were a breath of fresh air back in the day. Breakdown, Shadow of a Doubt, American Girl are some of my favorites.
This is my favorite Tom Petty song too, and my introduction to his music! I absolutely love the chorus, and the angst in his voice, and his delivery of each word!
Amber, you nailed it! 👊 👊 What first drew me to Tom Petty, as a 15yo,was the Angst in his voice in This song! I was hooked till now..as a 58yo. Also learning what the man stood for, the utmost respect went his way. A true beautiful human being ❤ I heard of Tom's passing whilst at work in the early morning here in Australia. I somehow managed to keep it out of my head for the rest of the day. When I was finally at home I went for a walk around my backyard and then let myself come to the realisation... I then fell apart 💔 Living in West Australia, which is known as the Wildflower State... He certainly belongs amongst The Wildflowers 🌻🌸🌼 Thankyou Tom!! ❤️ Legend!! ✌️❤️🎩
Every musician in this band is an expert. I love their early stuff especially. The keyboards are so prominent. Oh and Mike Campbell is a criminally underrated guitarist.
You should do "American Girl", Petty wrote it in the style of one of his greatest influences, the Byrds, specifically Roger McGuinn. It was recorded on the 4th of July, 1976 and was on Petty's first album. When McGuinn first heard it he said "When did I write that song?" and the following year he covered it much to Petty's delight. Tom Petty was very famous not long after. It was often his encore song when playing live and it was the last song Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever played. I had heard McGuinn's version first and that lead me to Tom Petty's music in 1977. He is truly one of the great American songwriters and will be long remembered.
This was the first single off their third album,Damn The Torpedoes,in 1979, It was the one that really blew their career wide open, and set them on the path to a long, successful run and classic American icon status.
"Here Comes My Girl" has always been my favourite Petty song, but Refugee was my first introduction to him. I remember buying this 45 record and wearing it out when this song first came out. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers! Thanks for another GREAT reaction and stroll down memory lane Jay & Amber!
Y’all are right, he was younger there because this is “the one” that put the world on notice and said “Hey we’re here!!!”😆🎸The album was called “Damn The Torpedos”🤣😂It also has “Don’t Do Me Like That” which was another big hit for them. It was the follow-up single to Refugee and put them on the map!! Takes me back to high school😌🤭😆💜✌️🫶🎸
My cousin gave me Damn the Torpedoes on LP for my birthday shortly after it was released. Instantly became... and remains... one of my all time favorite albums, and this is by far my favorite TP track.
Well y'all made me smile today by doing this one by Tom Petty!! Been suggesting this one forever. It's his breakout song from 1979 and my all time fav as well. Such an incredible rockin' banger!! Thanks guys!!
This song made me a huge Tom Petty fan over 40 years ago. The Heartbreakers were just as instrumental, Mike Campbell, Ron Blair, Benmont Tench and Stan Lynch, holy crap, what a freakin' band!
This is early Petty, 1979. He was more raw and more rocking then. All his stuff is great, but trended a bit more pop later on. Damn the Torpedoes was a superb album, you gotta do more of it.
TP’s music just always puts me in my happy place! 🥰 His voice is just so incredible and unique. Two other songs you gotta check out are “You Got Lucky” and “Insider” with Stevie Nicks. Both have very different vibes to each other but are just wonderful! Another artist that has a really unique voice that slightly reminds me of TP is Mark Owen. His albums are always different and so unique. “Child” and “Believe in the Boogie” are great songs to try out. Or some of the songs he sings lead for in the band Take That, particularly “Kidz” or “Shine”.
I love a lot of Tom Petty but Refugee remains my favorite song. Then again it's the first one I ever heard in high school, on my alarm clock radio creeping into my dreams one morning when it first dropped.
My #1 favorite band hands down. Every member amazing musician. Tom was a prolific lyricist. His solo career also outstanding. IMO Wildflowers was Tom’s crowning glory. His death still hurts 😔
"Refugee," a timeless rock gem birthed amidst the artistic synergy of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, defies categorization as it seamlessly weaves together defiant lyrics and Campbell's driving guitar riffs. Released in 1980 as part of the legendary album "Damn the Torpedoes," this anthem of resilience finds its power in the captivating juxtaposition of upbeat energy and emotionally charged storytelling. An intriguing fact behind the creation of "Refugee" lies in its humble origins-a chance jam session between Petty and Campbell. Initially discarded by the band, the demo resurfaced, engendering a fierce debate over the music mix. Fortunately, Petty's unwavering spirit prevailed, giving birth to a song that would push boundaries and scale the heights of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 15. Petty once revealed that many of his compositions delve into personal relationships, and "Refugee" is no exception. Yet, the track transcends the personal, digging deep into the essence of tenacity and bravery. It refuses to let the listener succumb to pain and hardship, urging all to defy their circumstances and not merely exist, but thrive. Unleashing a rebellious spirit that continues to reverberate across generations, the resonant refrain, "We don't have to live like a refugee," serves as a rallying cry and a reminder of our enduring capability to rise above our circumstances. "Refugee" remains an indelible testament to Petty's songwriting genius, forever etched in rock 'n roll's hallowed hallways. Its magnetic pull and timeless resonance are a testament to its enduring appeal, showcasing the band's penchant for crafting anthems that strike a chord within the human spirit.
Not even close. Tons of takes on most of the songs. And as TP was going through bankruptcy to get out of a bad record deal, they had to record surreptitiously and then their roadie would take the tapes and hide them so, if asked in court, Tom could legitimately say he didn't know where the tapes were.
I am an old guy from the 60s and I was fortunate to see Tom Petty live in Omaha not to long before he died. I have to tell you that it was the best concert that I have ever attended. His history alone made it worth it.
Tom surely has that unique voice. It’s a pleasure to listen to him sing. I missed my chance when he played at the Jazz Festival the year he passed away. I was invited to go, but didn’t and I regret t to this day. He is surely missed. I’ve never heard a bad thing said about him at any time. He was a down to earth cool guy from what I’ve been told by people who have seen him live. 💯💕🕊✌️
So sad I won't have the chance to see these guys in person just pumping this stuff out live, but man, what a catalogue and legacy Tom's left the world to enjoy, think and talk about for years to come. Tragic loss to the music world in particular but to the world as a whole with his passing. This stuff won't ever die, just great to see people like your excellent selves discovering all these incredible artists and bringing your own audience to the party.
this came out when i was a teen. i used to climb out on the roof at night in the summer, and look at the stars with my little cassette tape player, with damn the torpedoes. it is a masterpiece
Teen Angst is exactly the vibe/emotion Tom and The Heartbreakers cashed in on. LEARNING TO FLY, YOU WRECK ME, and SWINGIN' are a few I think you still need to hear (official videos, of course). Comedian/actor Garry Shandling and Tom were good friends and even neighbors. Garry passed away about a year before Tom, but managed to interview him at Tom's Malibu home & studio, and Tom eulogized Garry at his funeral (two guys you'd never figure to have much in common but really enjoyed each other) - but that 20 min. interview can be found on You Tube and would be good for your personal edification, and catch a glimpse of what Tom likened to Two Old Farmers on Acid. Tom was a regular guest on Garry's TV show "The Larry Sanders Show". I generally have to watch that interview at least once or twice a year when I'm really missing my brother (and check out the link to a clip of the last episode where Tom mixes it up with Clint Black - Hilarious).
Thank you for picking this up. This album (Damn The Torpedoes) occupies a large part of my college soundtrack. Fast-forward 37 years, and I take my son to see TP in Boston in August of 2017, during the Heartbreakers' 40th Year Anniversary Tour. So blessed we got to see him once before he passed... just a few months later. Heartbreaking indeed. (If I may, I recommend testing out his "solo" album Wildflowers. And a little bit after that was an occasionally played "Swingin'" track from the Echo album. Very interesting story. I know you'll like it!)
Tom Petty was all over the airwaves when he first came out. Such a unique artist with a very distinctive voice, the Heartbreakers were such a fun band! Check out Don't Do Me Like That!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have been waiting for this reaction since I started watching your channel over a year ago. This album "Damn the Torpedos" might have been the album that put TP and the Heartbreakers in front of the world. The entire album is wonderful and full of fantastic lyrics, killer riffs and the full might of the Heartbreakers. And hey, there aren't many guitars that sound better (or look better) than a Rickenbacher 12 string.
He's Absolutely Amazing!!! This is my ALL TIME favorite of his, many younger days at the pool hall winning money $$$$ every time this came on the jukebox.... seen him 5 times in concert, AWESOME SHOWS!!!!
I was stationed in Korea in the '80s and my favorite bar in the 'ville has a DJ playing records. I bought him a beer and asked for this song and every time I walked in that bar for my one-year tour he played this song immediately. I won a lot of bets when I took new troops to that bar and told them I could guess the next song to be played.
YOU GOT LUCKY, RUNNING DOWN A DREAM, and WOMAN IN LOVE are really good songs by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to react to. The songs are solid. And they still play well. Enjoy
If you want to hear angst you should check out "A Woman in Love," another of his early songs. Not quite as rocking but really shows off the uniqueness of his voice and his expressiveness.
This was the breakthrough song for him. I was only I don't know 10 or 12 years old when this came out. So I was just starting to get into current artists of the day. Because I had been a Beatle fan for already four years. Bought this album only about a year or two after it came out. Definitely a must. Even the losers and Night watchman are great songs off of this album. Take care Be well
This is classic Tom Petty. His first 4 albums all have this style of pure rock. This is from the 3rd album, Damn the Torpedoes, probably his most prolific record. Please check out “Woman in Love” from the 4th album, Hard Promises.
This song solidly takes me back to the Coast Guard as we are entering the estuary at Kodiak, Alaska. This song cemented itself in my memory back then because of its intensity and how it gelled so well with the intensity of the island and the cold, gray skies and silky clouds, wet mountains and the Kodiak bears we listened to off in the distance as we explored the wild there. Such an outstanding song.
This is one of Petty's coolest rockin songs. You MUST play my favorite by him, "You Wreck Me", featuring Howie Epstein on the guitar. It is top-notch rock and roll as Tom tells another story while the instrumental blend is the BEST!
I love Tom Petty! When I was 13 back in 1978, I sent a letter to their fan site and they sent me back a Heartbreaker necklace! I still have it :) Then I got to see them live in El Paso, TX. It was so amazing to finally be able to see them live!! Great reaction video!
The first time I heard Petty & Heartbreakers they sounded like the Byrds, and I remember thinking that if they ever find their own sound they'll be great. Boy, did they ever find their own sound!
Great song by Tom and great guitar work by the underrated Mike Campbell. Don't Do Me Like That from the same album, Damn The Torpedoes, is probably his best vibe song but it's too short always leaving me wanting more.
To me this IS the best of USA music - which is why I drove across a fair swathe of the USA listening to "Full Moon Fever" and similar albums (from John "Cougar" Mellencamp, Boston, Reo Speedwagon, ZZ Top and similar music). It's just Tom Petty and all his music is awesome! 🥰I fell in love with his music as a teenager whilst learning to play guitar. When you can play along with "Learning to Fly", life doesn't get any better than that.
