Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it's a little more complicated: he's yet to tell his family or friends he's gay and he doesn't actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he's fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson's Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli's acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.
Directed by: Greg Berlanti
Produced by: Wyck Godfrey and Elizabeth Berger
Screenplay by: Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger
Based on novel by: Becky Albertalli
Cast: Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Tony Hale

"You get to exhale now" So simple, but so powerful when you feel like you've been holding your breathe for so long.

No surprise they needed just one take (attempt) for this scene. When they filmed this, Jennifer was so perfect, Nick actually began to cry. Even more, the whole filming team began to cry. It’s such a powerful scene, they never needed more than one try, it was so natural, so deep, so honest. This is what film is made for.

My precious 17 year old gay son asked me to see this movie with him. This part of the movie meant so much to both of us. We wanted A little more but using the “exhale” analogy was a great metaphor for both of us to understand. It made sense to me as a father of a gay teen son and it made my son smile.

Coming out looks like such a difficult experience that straight folk are lucky to not have to go through, I mean look at the poor guy! ScottPS Same here! In my opinion it should not be so difficult for these people who are exactly the same as straights to have to go through something that looks very stressful! Hopefully the world will change one day but first I know this may sound bad but Islam and basically all religions that are against homosexuality need to be abolished! Have a heart these people are exactly the same as straights but choose to sleep with the same sex but WHO CARES!!! FYI If I was ever PM of the UK and I would increase laws and punishments towards people who are negative about homosexuals ten folds! Not on in this day and age and especially unaccepting parents! Great movie and hope it wins lots of awards!

My heart ached so much as this scene played out, I began sobbing as I watched it. This is hands down one of my favorite scenes from any film of all time. Although everyone’s story is different, this scene captured the pain and anxiety one feels whenever they’re afraid to be who they truly are. That feeling of “holding your breath” is something universal, that everyone feels at one point in their life. The way Simon’s mom reacted is so crucial, and although not all parents are as accepting and embracing, it is a reminder that no one is ever alone. After watching this film, I officially came out to my parents and a sense of pride I have never felt before washed over me. My parents were just as accepting, and now because of this new found inspiration, I will live out my truth. I am thankful for everyone who worked on this movie, and believed in it. Blessings to everyone who is going through this kind of pain. Keep fighting the good fight. It’s all worth it.

Donaldo Elias first congratulations to you and all the others on coming out to your family and/or friends and the courage that takes. I am older (33) and have been out for many years but this movie still resonated with me and the fact that it is giving people the courage to be who they are and live their own truth shows how important this movie is. I honestly think this is one of the best movies I have seen. A big part of this is for its impact on a community, not just for LGBT kids but their family and friends as well. And the excellent acting/ behind the camera work from everyone involved.

If you weren't aware, Nick Robinson (Simon) along with the rest of the cast and crew broke down in tears while filming this scene. Jennifer Garner's beautiful representation of this scene showed them just how important and empowering this speech is and how effective it can be. Everytime I watch it now it makes me tear up even more knowing that such a powerful scene can and has impacted so many. I can't wait until the full scene is available. The first part is just as important and the whole "I still love you" message is so clear and needed by so many people. It was actually added in as a suggestion from the director who didn't realize he needed it until someone uttered those exact words to him. And I just think that that makes it all the more empowering.

I watched this alone today in the theater. Alone in company, and in alone in the room. I was alone because I had to sneak out to see the film that has felt deeply personal to me, alone because I had no one else who could be there with me. No one who could cry with me or comfort me as I sobbed through this scene. I really hope one day I won't have to go at it alone, and that one day I can live as myself. In the meanwhile, though, this moment and this film became my own because it was the closest I had ever come to realizing myself in this world.

Moshe Bari - you may be alone physically right now, just know the is a whole community who will be there to support you. Coming out to your family and/or friends can feel like the hardest thing to do. No one can tell you the right time to do it. But once you do you can have your own "exhale" moment and I hope it goes like this scene for you.

This scene is just so perfectly articulated. I saw this with my dad, who I never really talked to about my sexuality, and after this scene he said that can sense that I was always tense or holding my breath. And I was. I was being a different person. It wasn’t until I came out that I became who I really am and became happy. I am so grateful this movie is here because it’s going to help so many people understand what it’s like, and help so many other kids like me make it through.

I can't really understand why some people keep saying it's dated and cliche. It discusses an issue that is still present, strong presence, and if you think that this movie is not worth watching or not for you then it's for other people who are outside your boring circle; like me from Iraq or Saudi Arabia or Iran or Russia or India or Libya. This movie means a lot to us and gives us so much relief to overcome the harsh reality we live ..... I love every movie that challenges social rules and norms and all sorts of backward beliefs and takes the lead to picture people's lives living under these beliefs like us gays.

This film has impacted me in a way no other film has ever done before. I'm merely fifteen, and I find so much safety in this scene, it makes me feel as if everything will be alright. Being raised in an environment where a sexuality other than heterosexual is "unconventional" and "abnormal", it's extremely difficult to come out to my peers, hence the reason why I'm closeted to this very day. However, this film has encouraged me to come out to very close friends and the responses have been overwhelmingly relieving. I am endlessly grateful for the cast, the crew, and everyone that had anything to do with this film because it's so, so important to LGBTQ+ youth who feel alone in what they're going through. If you haven't seen the film yet, brace yourself because "Love, Simon" is everything you've been waiting for.

I remember the days when I couldn't breathe, those nights when I'd wake up in a cold sweat and sometimes, I'd lie awake for hours contemplating what life would be like, if I were no longer there for my family. What purpose I had, if I weren't able to give my mother what she wanted. Or live up to my father's expectations of me. And then, I remember the sweat pouring down from my brow, the stinging sensation in my eyes, and the sound of my heart pumping so fast, it deafened the moment that I stood before my family and was ready to Exhale. This movie is beautiful, in the way that the mother is more than just a good mom, more than a friend, more than a therapist, she sees him for who he truly is, who he always was and who he will be. She knows the real him, behind the mask, holding back those floods of tears. She connected with him on a deep, emotional level. When they talk about a mother love for her child, this type of love transcends the physical, it's above all else, the truest most beautiful feeling, that the heart shares with another. And it's not even necessarily biological, your stepmother, your adoptive mother, someone whom you feel extremely close to, and they to you. It's more than chemical reaction. It's Beyond. This type of love is rare, but it does exist. And Lucky the few who ever get to experience such a love. My mom showed me this love, and that day changed my whole world. That day I finally felt like I could breathe again. I'd love to wish each of you reading this, the very best with your new chapters of your lives, it's not about how many steps you take, but in how and where they will eventually lead you. To those who are still struggling, still waiting to exhale. You can. You will, in time, you'll find your moment to free yourself and let go. You will find a new beginning to claim as your own. I believe in you! You alone, are the master of your destiny. Dig deep, and you'll find Courage to finally put yourself first and embrace all you are and all you shall be. =) Love is the tie which binds, building a bridge, connecting with ourselves and others. If only the world had more of this type of love.

Honestly I relate so much to this. I’m still very much in the closet, and it sucks to have to hide all the time. I’m literally so paranoid at times. I have to make sure I walk like a straight person, have to keep from making hand gestures when I talk, and have to stay quiet and unnoticed. Movies like this make me want to come out, but that’s not ideal. I wish I could talk to someone like Simon does, but that’s the point where reality is different from a movie. In this world some of us stay hidden forever and some of can’t talk to anyone. Like in the movie, I plan to move away for college and then come out.

This, right here, is why this movie is so goddamn important. Think of all the LGBT kids who will go to watch this film who have never heard these words directed at someone like them. Think about how good they will feel. Think about how loved, how accepted they will feel. For some, it might give them the confidence to come out to the ones they love and finally have that weight lifted off their chest. For others, if they have family who refuse to accept them, it will give them that much needed validation and kind words to move forward with their head held high. THAT is why this movie is so important.

This scene hit me hard, my parents are very religious, and this is all I want from them. I want to feel like I will be loved by them no matter who I am. I feel like I can’t breathe at times and I almost slip it out at times but catch myself. I am just afraid of losing them because I love them so much, but I am afraid the moment they found out, they would act like I am not their child anymore. This movie was relatable in many ways.

Guys I’m in the same boat as both of you . I’ve never felt more wrecked after a film like this and more compelled to tell them . I also had panic attacks and cried out of nowhere and felt I couldn’t breathe . I’m trying to gain the courage .

V.A Gonzalez You and Ben will soon gain the courage to do it, like she said in this movie, once that happens, we get to finally exhale and be who we are completely. Just gotta keep pushing until that day comes :) we are strong

Zhyber thank you guys . Even though I don’t know you , just having someone to even say something small can give the necessary feeling of positivity and togetherness. Just thinking about the potential of this film and how much it is changing people like us warms my heart ❤️.

You should take your parents to see the movie. I hope things work out for you. I went to see the movie and I was the 3rd person. A couple sitting in the front. I wanted to cry during several scenes, but thought it would have been awkward. If I was by myself in the movie theater, I would have definitely cried 😭😢😂

Hi, so. I couldn't see this scene in the cinema. Because my eyes were blurred with tears, and my glasses were all smudged. This film holds such a strong place in my heart that no other film will. This scene feels like the warmest hug, and it means so much to not only know, but feel, that we can "Exhale" now. Love, Kieran.

when i came out to my mom, those seconds before the words came out of my mouth felt really long. i was looking at her and in my head i knew this was the last time we’d spend before i broke the image she had of what my future would be. it really feels like the air gets thin on that one breath before saying it. so the “you get to exhale now” is really on point. she knew i was still me. and i hope the day comes when we don’t hold our breath anymore and coming out won’t be a thing. until then, to those out and to those who still aren’t ready, happy pride.

I still visit this scene even after a month of watching it and it makes me cry each time. I sobbed the first time I saw it in the theater so much to the point that I was shaking because i knew i’d never get this from my mother. I wish I could have the experience of her hugging me afterwards and giving me words of reaffirmation. but i know it won’t happen. and though i thought i made peace with that, sometimes the emotion overwhelms me and i break down crying. i’m glad i have friends and my sisters who support me but nothing will ever compare to your own mother loving you unconditionally. it really does hurt.

I went to go see this movie in theaters before it came out and the tickets were free in Austin. I went with 6 or 7 friends and honestly when this scene happened, I heard the entire movie theater crying. I looked over at all my friends (LGBTQ & Straight) and all of them were crying. This is so powerful because this is what it looks like to be loved. This is the reaction or words we all want to hear when we come out or when we confess something that’s been holding us back. After the showing I immediately ran out the theater and called my mom and told her that it was time to come out. Not over the phone obviously but in person. This movie does inspire you to come out and be who you want to be and finally breath. Seriously, give them all the awards and especially to original author.

i've been having a hard time of accepting who i am, in my daily devotional i've been receiving encouragement of coming out, of accepting my identity from God. The day before our youth service, i watched this with a friend and it inspired me to come out to my parents this sunday, mother's day. Youth service came, all i did is pray that the preach will confirm the encouragement God's been giving me, i still had that fear in my heart but i'm gaining confidence. I was actually expecting a preach that will stop me but God heard and it encouraged me more. I was crying the whole time and my cell leader asked me if she can talk to me. I got so afraid and i bursted out crying as i tell her im bisexual. I never expected to come out to her first thinking that she'd be the hardest one to talk to about these things. I thought she'd throw verses at me but she didn't. She listened to my explanation well and she told me that i don't have to hide it anymore and we'll go through this together, It's like what simon's mom said. It was totally moving she said she's excited for what's about to come and she knows that God will use me in this area and i just have to hold on to that promise that God has for me. I know i'd help other Christians too who are having a hard time of coming out. This is a process that God has for me take and my purpose will follow.

I brung my mom to watch this with me when it was in theaters.. When I said we both burst into tears and hugging each other while watching this scene.. ooph it was so powerful and she said she loves me so much. We cried not only cuz it was so powerful but because this is exactly what she told me even the part when jennifer said "it's almost like I feel you holding your breath.." I knew this scene was coming so once I saw it in theaters I immediately started crying. I LOOOOVE this movie so much it's very special in my heart and I'm so grateful for it. Anyone who is homophobic should watch this movie so they can understand especially Christians who love God they need to understand this soooo much.
