As Well As The Fact That Many Are Unaware Of,, Christine Had The Final Deciding Vote On Whether Or Not To Let Stevie & Lindsey Could Join The Group,, She Could Have Easily Voted No,, But Christine Wasn't All About Ego Or Needing/Wanting To Be The Queen,, Etc. She Voted Yes & Welcomed Them With Open Arms,, Even Befriending Stevie To Make Her Feel More Comfortable..Which In Turn,, Christine Would Be Constantly Overshadowed By Stevie & Wanna Be Fans (Ones That Only Became Fans After "Rumors") & Making It As If Stevie Is Fleetwood Mac & Other Members Like Second Class & Stevie Being The Queen Bee..All Things That Always Made Me Feel Bad For Christine & The Other Members..Even In Her Passing People Will Mention Stevie..Shame On Them.

One of the best and most unique things about the Mac is that they had three lead vocalists and only listening to Stevie's songs gives you just one part of the experience. Just like Frida and Agnetha in ABBA, the combination of Christine and Lindsey's vocals is perfect - it's almost like they created a fourth, brand new voice for the band. For me, that's the definitive "Fleetwood Mac sound".
@richardgoddard37
@richardgoddard37 Год назад
And 3 brilliant songwriters.
@michelemercier2286
@michelemercier2286 Год назад
Good comparison. In ABBA many focus on Agnetha, just as Stevie draws more attention in FM. That's understandable of course, Agnetha is a great "actress" with her voice, singing in a way that touches people's emotions (I mean - The Winner Takes it All is just...wow). But Frida's no slouch. I believe she took opera training. She too can hit emotional bull's eyes (Knowing Me, Knowing You, Our Last Summer). But no matter what the song, the best part of any ABBA song is when the "third voice" comes in - the blend of their voices together is just, well, the ABBA sound. The "third voice" is a bit more distinct than the Christine/Lindsey combo as it is always in the forefront, so It is no surprise that their biggest hit was a song with a shared vocal lead. I think with FM is is a bit different - pretty sure that "Dreams" is their biggest hit. But "Don't Stop" is right up there too. It is really hard to pick a favourite FM song, but it is probably a toss up between "Go Your Own Way" and "The Chain" and of course, neither of those songs have Stevie or Christine singing lead.

This sound, which I would describe as lush, was what Lindsey Buckingham brought to the group since he co-produced their records while he was in the band. He and Christine together were special, and their voices melded together. She was the more natural pure songwriter in FM, and wrote their pop classics. No offence Jay, but I have always been a Christine fan and FM can not possible go on now without her.

Totally agree, James. The sound is thanks to Lindsey's brilliant ear for production. He and Christine get short shrift because Stevie had the bigger image and solo career. Stevie could write a great song and her vocals used to be amazing back in the day, but in my opinion, Christine and Lindsey were true musicians in every sense of the word. No disrespect to Stevie. I saw her twice in concert. But, I really hate to see Fleetwood Mac viewed as Stevie's backup band.

This and Christine's Little Lies which you also reacted to are from the 1987 album Tango In The Night - which does have a different 1980s sound with Lindsey' Buckingham's use of the fair light and synthesizers in arrangements and production. FM was one of the few big 70s bands that successfully moved into the 80s. This album far more sophisticated and adult than most as well. The FM "sound" - the multi layering of vocals and instruments in production that Lindsey brought to the band is still there. Now if you listen to and react to Lindsey's songs on Tusk you might not think that sounds like FM either. I recommend Tusk, What Makes You Think You're The One, I Know I'm Not Wrong to start off with - you might not be ready for The Ledge. 🤣 And once again you have listened to more non Stevie songs - you listened to Lindsey as lead on The Chain and Go Your Own Way.

This song is currently being used as a jingle for a car commercial and you can hear this chorus 100 times a day on TV. Anyway, MORE Christine please! Little Lies, Hold Me, As Long As You Follow, Over My Head, You Make Loving Fun, Say You Love Me, etc etc etc, were all big FM hit songs written and sung by her. If you're only listening to Stevie's songs you're missing out on 2/3 of what made FM great. Then get to Lindsey's songs afterwards. Only THEN will you have a better idea of what made them so special.

There are so many incarnations of Fleetwood Mac that those of us who have been listening to them for over 50 years appreciate each of the styles that were adopted as band members left and new members came in. To listen to them from 1970-71 up through all their later work and everything in between you see a musical evolution that was beautiful in each phase. You should check out Bob Welch, who was a guitarist and vocalist on five of their early albums and then pursued a solo career. Ebony Eyes and Sentimental Lady were a couple of his hits and I guarantee you will enjoy them immensely. Sadly, he took his life around 10 years or so ago due to irreversible health conditions so that he wouldn’t become a burden to his wife as caretaker.

Fleetwood Mac has a history unlike any other band out there. From their formation as a blues band in England in 1967 with the phenomenal Peter Green leading the group to the Bob Welch led years in the early '70's to when Lindsay and Stevie finally joined in 1975. They went through several line up changes and about three different musical transitions before becoming the massive '70's pop hit making machine. Christine joined the band in 1970 and had her first lead vocal on 1971's "Future Games" album.

This song and “Little Lies” were my first introduction to Fleetwood Mac because the Tango In The Night album came out in 1987, when I was about 9 years old. I loved it but my mom, who was a hippie art student in the 70s, did not because it was not the Fleetwood Mac sound she’d grown to love. I’m glad to have discovered more of their music in my late teens. Now I’m more of a 70s Fleetwood Mac kind of person, but this song still slaps 😊

Jay, Fleetwood Mac is a band with not one set writer or lead. A lot of bands you’ve come to like have that dynamic as well. Stevie sings songs she writes, and sometimes others.. Lindsey Buckingham sings the songs he writes, Christine sung the ones she wrote mostly… Mick Fleetwood and John Mcvie covering the tempo and bass respectively. That’s what makes them Fleetwood Mac. And you’re wrong, Fleetwood Mac doesn’t have a sound… they have many because of all the composers in the band. That’s Fleetwood Mac.🦋✌🏼

Actually, the great thing about Fleetwood Mac is they experimented with different instruments, beats, and sounds. You guys just heard a few songs with Stevie singing lead first. For example, the only marching band to win a Grammy (I think), was the USC Trojans, playing on FMac's "Tusk". For a great McVie lead, hear "Say Yoi Love Me". They all sound great together on "Don't Stop".

You know, the music video is actually based on a poem by Alfred Noyes called The Highwayman. You can see the beginning lines of the poem in the beginning of the video. 🙂 (It's actually a tragic poem a little bit like Romeo and Juliet. I like the ending they have though. They're together now in death. ❤️) WHICH was also made into a song by World/Folk music singer Loreena McKennit. She is someone you NEED to check out. She's been around since the 80's. ❤️

@Blue Wave 2020 Apparently you have never read Christine McVie interviews where she talked about pefroming better on Cocaine and Champagne. Go ahead and google it. They both had their drug days, as many musicians have and still do. You don't have to be negative about Stevie to prop up Christine. It isn't respectful. They made a pact to support each other in a male dominated industry. They were friends.

Christie McVie actually released a solo album back in 1984, and if you want to delve deeper into her music, maybe do a few songs from that album. I would DEFINITELY recommend doing either 'Got A Hold On Me' or 'Love Will Show Us How'...both were nice hits for Christie. Stevie and Lindsey get much of the attention for Fleetwood Mac, and deservedly so as both are amazing...but Christie was a VITAL part of the success of FM, along with her ex, John McVie(just listen to the bass in FM tracks), and of course Mick Fleetwood.

She was with Fleetwood Mac since 1968, starting as a session musician and singer at the request of Peter Green. She played on every single Fleetwood Mac except the first self-titled album " Fleetwood Mac" released in 1967 and the live blues album " Fleetwood Mac in Chicago". She played and sung in this band for 55 years. She completed a lot of uncredited work between 1968 thru 1970 on Fleetwood Mac albums, Mr. Wonderful, Then Play On and Kiln House. She wrote twice as many hit songs for Fleetwood Mac then Stevie and Lindsey combined together. I adore Stevie and Lindsey and with all due respect, Christine was Mrs. Mac and the Mac in Fleetwood Mac. She also did all of the artwork for Kiln House album cover. She was an icon, brilliantly talented and a great human being. Rest in peace.. Christine Ann Perfect McVie.❤

I always found it interesting that , rather than focusing on Christine or the band performing the song or the typical staging one might see to present a visual narrative of the song, they instead chose to present a depiction of Alfred Noyes 1906 poem "The Highwayman".. Great solo by Christine. Try "You Make Loving Fun", "Little Lies" and "Say You Love Me"
