I always loved how you can literally 'return to monotony' by getting promoted with the Reason (clerical work) path. I accidentally did it once and... game ended. I laughed a bit cuz it made sense and I was happy that the character managed to go do something else rather than go down the occult path because safety net was back underneath him.

The funny thing is you can do it up to attaining 6 marks. So you can transform yourself into a steampunk cyborg or a glowing orb of light and change your mind to take a office job.

This game is scary realistic and life-like. The artist starves, the wage worker will eventually starve, and the pursuit of secret knowledge will fill you with existential dread.

A tip for grinding your passion and reason skills: Morlands sells 2 or 3 copies of "Book of Poetry" and "Book of Essays" - reading these grants a lesson learned in glimmering or erudition, respectively. (You may also find these at the auction house.) It yields the same result as 3 study cycles (reason -> erudition, reason -> erudition, erudtion + erudition = lesson learned). Saving this study time lets you study more lore, sooner (better for doing commissions!). Keep these skill books on hand for when you are doing a final push at leveling up a skill. In the meantime, doing commissions is a great way to rack up erudition in addition to money-generating spintriae. Ideally, studying a reason card itself should be a last resort. (Painting can also generate glimmering while also providing funds and contentment.) For this reason I recommend advancing sooner than we see in this video - the above recommendations require the talk and explore abilities, which result from founding your cult. The cult can exist and you can start amassing followers and patrons without doing anything that generates notoriety. Some followers can even delete notoriety cards for you.

I usually save the books for the final grind as trying to beat the decay cycle for the first Erudition/Glimmering while you're doing the fourth is a pain. Instead I just whip out all 3 copies at once plus one I generate for a much faster advancement.

Excess Reason cards can be converted into Passion cards if the Passion cards are lost, so I'll usually max the Reason cards out as a backup.

really big thing I figured out that took me from stumbling in the dark to getting ahead in this game? if you click on the hourglass tile, it'll tell you what event is coming up next. whether it's depression, fascination, restlessness, government interference, or even nothing at all, the tile will tell you. you only get a 60 second heads up, but knowing to have a vitality ready when you get sick or to wait on having your cultists do sketchy stuff until the attention from the police blows over can really make the difference in this game

I add that part to the series later. I try not to add too much too soon so watchers don't feel overwhelmed. That being said, I appreciate these sort of comments. Several of you have pointed several new to me concepts during this series and it's become a sort of cooperative learning process.

Having started my inaugral playthrough prior to watching this, I now know that my overly eager aspirant, Strauss Nachtwald, is utterly doomed to failure. Consumed by his own fascination with occult books he cannot read, notorious due to misguided attempts to convert a weary detective to an unconventional way of thing...basically a raving madman who slowly but steadily comes unhinged

Glad I could help. Keep in mind at the time of this writing, the game dev is going through a rapid period of updates that have returned the game to near beta state with stages of bugs arising and being fixed. I am waiting for this to stabilize before resuming new episodes.

In RL Judaic Kabbalah studies, it is recommended that a student be middle aged, have already raised his children, be in good health and have a good relationship with his wife, friends and neighbors if he desires to study. (The field is only open to men for the most part) This is so they have the emotional, mental and spiritual support to withstand the stresses of studying the occult. Given it's one of the oldest and least fraught fields of occult study, the advice to first strengthen the self and ground yourself in the material world seems good strategy to me.

theres something about this game that just keeps you going. I stopped playing for a few months jumped back into it and just fumbled my way into the spider and peacock gate. think ive hit a wall though im struggling to get iridescent a lesson learnt out i need like 4 so i can then combine higher lores. and i cant find a way to up my desire yet im sucked in allowing my fascination to consume me maybe i am going mad.

The way you increase your Desire (in an Aspirant run) is to first Dream about it with the appropriate Lore (Lantern for Enlightenment, Grail for Sensation and Forge for Power) which upgrades it from a Temptation to a Dedication. This also locks you into that path from that point onward so be sure that's the path you want. If you want to change that path, dream with your Desire and Reason (for Enlightenment), Heart (for Sensation) or Passion (for Power). Once you've got your Desire to a Dedication level you must then place in the Work box with a level 6 or higher of the appropriate Lore (Lantern, Grail or Forge) Then it becomes an Ascension level card. At the Ascension level every time the Season of Ambitions comes around - the event that usually gives you a Restlessness - you need to "feed" the card. The Ascension: Power card only requires Funds making it the easiest run and the one I recommend for new players. The Ascension: Sensation card requires a Prisoner, Lunatic or Corpse. The Ascension: Enlightenment card can only be fed a Prisoner and is the hardest run. Once you hit 6 marks on your card from feeding, you can ascend.

@@FantasticWorlds a good way I've found for getting prisoners is to hire a hireling(sp?) This way you don't risk your cult members getting wounded trying to seduce someone.

@@jacthing1 That is a safer way but Wounds on Cultists are a feature, not a bug to me if I have the Funds to heal them. Once healed, the Cultist gets 2 points in Edge, Knock or Winter. Considering all three can make summoning certain spirits easier, the surviving Cultists more valuable.

Hey! Great video! I have played CS on an off since it was launched but although I love it (and have always been a fan of Sunless Sea/Skies), I never managed to actually get decent progress in the cult stuff due to not figuring out the mechanics. I downloaded a very nice guide called Academic Folly, which teaches you things without teaching you and it's still very obscure (though some things started to make some sense). I really liked your explaining style and am eager to watch this series! Thank you and see you on the other side!

I feel so dumb. I’ve played for 1 and a half of my 3 days off from work so far and all I’ve got are 30 dread cards in my irl pocket….. everyone single game I would keep going further while trying to upgrade health, reason, and passion. Never even thought to deal with those first. Right now I’ve got 5 believers, 2 pawns in my cult that meets at a temp HQ, we just robbed a new age yoga mom book store where two guys got stabbed, had to buy them meds, and alllll that while I’m still a shit shoveler experimenting with finger paints. Not to mention having to send one of the stab victims back in after feeding him my own blood (vitality I think).

One of the things to consider is that spent 60-100 hours on this game and crashed and burned multiple times to get to the level of skill when I started this series and I am still learning things. I created this series to help people get over that initial difficulty hump and into the more stable and enjoyable mid-game. And yes, you generate some very interesting stories while playing this game. Just wait until you get to where I play the Lantern series as Star War's Palpatine.

This helped a little but I am still way confused. I have only played a few minutes but I felt lost. Maybe I just need to keep playing? When I do play, I feel like I am must putting cards where it is glowing? Looks like it could be so much fun but I have OCD and need to understand everything to enjoy myself. LOL I will keep playing I guess. Thanks for a great tutorial though.

One thing you keep in mind is even when you can do something, that doesn't mean you should. The glowing shows where you can place a card and placing it there will often tell you what it will do but be careful not to commit to the action unless you've got a relatively good idea of what it does and that action fits your plans. Control the game, don't let it control you. The later episodes will fill in more detail what those actions are.

So, you went for the Morninglight path as I call it in this game? It is kind of the same strat that they are using in SWL...self-help before getting into the Scientology-esque sort.

Depends on the playthrough. The Morninglight path is too slow for the Apostle playthroughs due to the pressure of the Immortal Enemy inevitably counting down to your destruction. There I tend to do the strategy I call the Western Isle Express. I have two general methods for mid-tier advancement, the typical Back to Basics I'll be discussing here and the Mothman strategy I seem to have invented. Then there's my Where's Their Fire, There's Smoke and the opposing F**k the Police strategies I use for the Suppression Bureau. If there's enough interest I'll post some of alternative and crazier strategies on my next run through.

I picked this up because I love the lore of Sunless Sea/Skies, but was disappointed to find the gameplay so stripped back and mechanical compared to those games. It made me feel like I was just fiddling with my inventory the whole time rather than enjoying periods of messing with stats and items mixed with melancholy periods of travel/contemplation and tense interruptions of combat. I went to the wiki to get my lore fix, because I just found the process of watching timers go down and micromanaging cards with minimal animations pretty boring.

Don't get me wrong, I like games with lots of reading, and I absolutely loved Sunless Sea, thought Sunless Skies was even better, loved Disco Elysium, played and loved the Shadowrun trilogy, but this game felt like the drip feed text thing taken to the extreme, and I found myself feeling rushed while reading due to the front and center presence of timers, even when I had them paused. Getting to port in Sunless Sea/Skies usually felt like a relief just due to the nature of how travel is usually the tense part of those games, so reading felt like the reward and I was relaxed, focused, and typically in a good place to enjoy reading in port (where the bulk of the dialogue happens).

@@FantasticWorlds I see class quite differently than how it's often presented. I firmly believe there are only two classes; worker class and ownership class. The ownership class relies on utilizing the working class to aid in their own oppression for extra scraps.
