I am struggling with this very much. I try to do good that is unnoticed, but I still expect love in return. I'm an unrepentant sinner, if there ever was one.

We aren't meant to be unnoticed hermits right off the bat, I don't think... God gives us family inside the Church for a reason. Sure, there's no special reward for functioning normally and for iron sharpening iron, but my impression from the epistles is that it's an essential part of the Christian life. In the modern world we were born fasting from so many good spiritual things, we need help to get closer to God in order to receive more grace.

Lord jesus christ have mercy on me. Forgive me of the sin of loving my ego and craving recognition for my petty deeds. I know now i can only do good through you. Please forgive me and guide me to love as you do.

There’s a balance to this, I would say. Suppose you keep loving someone who is harmful towards you, that’s called abuse. Now if that person has children and they keep exposing their children to this harmful person for the sake of “loving” that person, then this in effect abuses the children. Or suppose a beloved parish has an abusive and domineering priest, and some of its parishioners struggle with addiction or suicidal ideation, should they stay in such a harmful environment every week because they love the parish, or should they seek spiritual guidance from another priest in another parish? There’s a time to stay and love the unlovable, and there’s a time and a place to “shake the dust off your feet” and move on. Sometimes it’s best to love others from a distance. “Do not cast your pearls before swine” and don’t share valuable things of the heart to those who will not treasure them. Everything requires Wisdom, including Love. “Wisdom! Let us attend!”
@wellthatwasfunny
@wellthatwasfunny 7 месяцев назад
It’s pretty clear cut. You love your enemies especially those who hate and wrong you. Removing yourself or someone from an abusive person is not the same as hating the abusive person, neither is staying a form of love.
@princezzpuffypants6287
@princezzpuffypants6287 Месяц назад
Exactly as stated above: "staying is not a form of love"; staying is also not always an expression of love. First Corinthians chapter 13 explains to us what love is: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." It is clear that one can show love by walking away. By walking away from an abuser, you remove the temptation of sin (the temptation to continue abusing you); that is, in fact, a very loving act.

@@wellthatwasfunnyI suppose its not that pretty clear cut ... Be it Christian, Catholic or Orthodox ; and in so many other Christian Denominations; we are ( in general ) not only expected to keep loving our enemies and abusers; but to also keep endlessly enduring their abuses with a kind attitude and cheerful spirit ... If we try to remain silent in their presence, try to remove ourselves ftom their company, or try to lessen our communication with them in any way ( that too for our own safety ), then it is automatically assumed that we are unforgiving and thus miserably fail to be CHRIST like ... 😓😔🥲

Love is also a choice. If we rested it all on feelings we’d never get anywhere. If feeling the absence or antithesis to love, go and do the direct opposite, do loving things even without feeling it. More often than not you’ll find that feeling will follow with action 🤙🏼

It's not at all that you shouldn't do good things for those that love you. It's just that that is normal and expected. We emulate Christ when we do good and love those that do not reciprocate. To those that might even hate us. That's the difference between a decent person and a good Christian.

Your fundamental misunderstanding here is that the message of the Bible is NOT to bring about social reform or justice in this world. It is to bring spiritual salvation.
@lenk172
@lenk172 7 месяцев назад
Like the other commenter said, the Bible isn't unaware of the fact you'll be burned. That's the whole point of it, Jesus was crucified for it. But it's telling you that if you go in voluntarily, even knowing this, things will turn out better for everyone. Read the New Testament, you'll quickly see it's directly applicable to this stuff.
