Looks like Rip's got a new protege. He'll be pressing over 300 in 2 years!

It took me a couple squat sessions to figure out that I should just hold my back straight (i.e. in its normal position). Before that I kept overextending my back when preparing to squat. A good clue that this was wrong was that my back automatically became straight when coming out of the squat. Honestly, it's amazing how many little details I miss in read the book, only to notice them when I reread it later (same for SS videos/blogs/etc.).

I can attest: lumbar overextension during heavy squats has caused me much grief and pain and it’s because I never learned it right. Meeting with a SS coach in a few weeks to do so.

Great video- love his explanation of proper spinal position for the squat. An older video where Mark makes this same point made a huge difference for my squat. Glad to see a more concise, newer video explaining this concept.

Small technical point for camerawork: your stabalisation is set too high because of shake/bumps when recording on the day. Consider picking up a cheap glidecam so in the future you dont have to throw stab on and crank it up to max. Love the vids by the way big fan.

RIP this is exactly the thing i struggle with, what is normal vs over extention and how to achieve it. This was helpful but more on this would be good, like how you would coach it.

while i find them arguing online interesting, and calgary's video helpful- the calgary guy was inaccurate about what rip's advice is. rip does not advise elbows back, not squatting to depth, a loose low back, or knees never moving forward... all of which are the submitter's form issues. perhaps more accurate would be that these are the issues people have when learning low bar squat? peace

I dont quite understand the difference between a anterior pelvic tilt and sticking the butt out, if it’s being done without hip flexion?
@Nightman9001
@Nightman9001 Год назад
You can "stick your butt out" in 2 different ways - through tilting your pelvis, and through hinging at the hips. Depending on your anatomy and the type of squat you perform, some degree of hip hinge will be necessary, but the pelvis should always remain "aligned" with the ribcage. Like if your pelvis and ribcage were two buckets full of water, you'd want them pointing directly upward when standing straight, and as you hinge, you want them to stay aligned (no longer pointing straight up, but both pointing in the exact same direction).
@Nightman9001
@Nightman9001 Год назад
If you're confused about hinging, look at it this way - assume good posture and brace your core. Now try to touch the ground in front of you WITHOUT bending your legs. You may not be able to, and you'll probably feel some pulling in your hamstrings. By keeping a neutral spine / straight back & straight legs, the only way you can physically bring your upper body closer to the floor is by hinging at the hips. In short, if your upper body is stiff, and your legs are stiff, there's only one place left for your body to bend from. The hips. That = hinging.

Can i set my low back by lifting my chest. I am afraid that flexing my abs would cause hernia.
@Kabukieman2
@Kabukieman2 3 года назад
improvising your own techniques over rip's advice is.... dangerous. having a muscular abdomen prevents hernias..
@Periklis02
@Periklis02 3 года назад
@@Kabukieman2 Ok. But the Starting Strength protocol says that you must lift your chest.
@Nightman9001
@Nightman9001 Год назад
I'm not a doctor but herniation happens when vertebrae are compressed. You know what compresses vertebrae (among other things)? Not bracing under heavy load. You know what part of you braces? Your abs. Don't reinvent the wheel. It won't work and you'll almost certainly hurt yourself with whatever you come up with.

A black loose shirt on the poor guy and so then you have to get all handsy with him and man handle the young lad by the shirt and then you top it off with “hoop” as a new “Ripism”. Dammit rip let the young people around you help you with thinking these things through you’re a mess hahaha
