Nice "Junk Box" antenna, using what you have on hand and making it work,. Good or bad it gets you on the air :-)

Thanks- the sort of antenna I like constructing. In fact, I did an (approx) 6.5m wire GP with 3 x elevated radials fed with 450 Ohm ladder line via a decent balanced tuner and I was surprised at coverage and ability for what was a super simple antenna. Cheers, Nick M1DDD

Thanks for the tips on this 20 Meter antenna. Getting ready for a “Pre-field Day” here in N. Idaho for our club. Many new hams who want to get up to speed on HF. We will have NVIS, Long wire and other antennas. This and the other videos for the Yaesu FT-891 are great. N7WEB.

New to short wave. Just passed Technician and studying for general. I really got into this for DXing. I am in Arizona and hope to make contacts across the Rockies to North Dakota and Minnesota. Any advice? Is 20m better than 40? Similar? Both worth trying? Will an antenna like the one you set up here work well over distances of 1000 or 2000 miles (3000km)? Thanks for the great video. 👍

I would use the Balun when not operating 20m as its not needed. But the impedance will be higher on the other bands. The LDG may tune it no problem with just the 1:1 balun used instead.

I agree with this, was what I was thinking. antenna impedance should be close to 50 ohms at 20 meters without it and the 45 degree radials.

I liked your video. I like see what antennas I can build with things I have laying around. I haven't bought any commercial antennas even though I have several. Lucky for me they were given to me. I find it interesting and fun to build antennas. Sometimes it works really well and sometimes it doesn't. I am always suspicious of a 1:1 especially if it is across the band. HF I like to be below 2:1 It's doesn't make as much difference as VHF and higher. Your video also demonstrates it's not that difficult to put together a good antenna. Keep sharing your ideas. The steel for some reason makes me wonder about efficiency, but then again the old 102 or so inch whip has always dominated the 1/4 wave CB model. I once had 2 co-phazed on a small car, and was able to talk home once time from 150 miles away ground wave with 150 watts or so on SSB. Anyway I have been toying with a multi band vertical but the radials have held me back. My metal roof has tempted me and using a good Balun Design that will support using a 32 ft made from old CB ground planes with out radials but so far my health issues have kept me off the roof. i do have several tuners plus a artificial ground/ counterpoise tuner that I am hoping might get the ground half tuned to off set not having radials. The theory seems good, but no actual proof it will work for me as others have claimed the unun has for them. Anyway thanks for the shared result you have had.

Very good video man. I unfortunately paid big bucks for a buddiepole before experimenting with fabrication. That is due to lack of Elmer I think. I now know better and will take newbies under my wing. I just tuned my buddie stick rigid shock cord for 20 meters and was successful making contacts late in the day, I was surprised. Are you on fb? Thank you

Great informative video there Dennis, i have a 11mtr silver rod on a sectional hydraulic mast, (jack n pin )so it’s 50ft high to the tip of the antenna. Your idea would make a great conversion for me on HF particularly on 20mtrs. Save me a tidy sum of cash to boot. Barnie UK 👍🏼

Really liked your explanation of construction. Your comforting words for beginners (like me) who might stress over not getting SWR flat are welcomed and important. Hoping to make some progress installing one like yours, during the COVID pandemic. I'll let you know how it goes. De VA3TOV, 73.

Hi VE3BF! KG7TVP, here. I just passed the General Class license and am still ignorant of a lot. You mentioned your radials on the home brew antenna are 90 degrees apart. Is that what I see in the video that looks like guy wires? I read that the ground plane radials are sloped downward and sometimes laid upon the ground or buried. I'd like to build your antenna to use with the radio I plan to buy (Yaesu FT 950). May I ask what radio you used in the video? Thanks! I'd appreciate any advice, comments, suggestions. Wayne

Hello, Congrats on getting your ticket and welcome to the ham radio fraternity. The radial in this video are the green wires (yes, they do kinda look like guy wires but they offer no support to the antenna) they are spaced 90 degrees apart and because the antenna is elevated and portable the are sloped downwards. If you were to build this antenna for a permanant installation it would be a good Idea to add more radial and the bury them. The radio I was using for the testing is a Yaesu FT-891 but the results will be the same regardless of the brand or model. I'm presently working on 2 new easy to build antennas and now that the snow is gone and the ground is drying up I will be making a bunch of new videos soon. 73 de VE3BF

He has them cut to 16ft 6in, same length of his vertical element. 5:36 and 5:51 are where he mentions the lengths.

You say you used a 4:1 balun but for 20 meters I would expect you to use a 1:1 on 20 meters? Terry
@jfrphoto01
@jfrphoto01 2 года назад
He explained the reason that he used the 4:1! It allows the antenna to work on other bands where a 1:1 would restrict it to just the 20 meter band. I have the same setup on my vertical..
