Everything you know not to do with kick and bass: I do it. When I say "we are musicians, sound is our instrument" that means we don't approach a mix as a collection of sounds, we hear it as a song and bring out what the song is doing through the use of sound.

Internet is great, a lot of information, but if you don't know how to filter that information it will work against you. Great video Matthew!

the reverb kick thing reminds me of simulating a room mic for a kit where you get a body like room feel from just the kick alone. Nice tips!

Great! Really nice! I used to produce beats on my MPC60 in later '80 and I remember that there was a way to address the pad velocity to the sample triggering start point. So, more brutal hits produce earlier start points giving more and more attack to the very transient, and softer hits produce "delayed" start points losing the transient more and more. This feature allowed me to mimic the beater and bass drum sound and physics a little better at that time...

I have been trying to get this type of low end for a while since i saw this video but i am not making any headway i am facing challenges of tweaking the reverb, i don't know which reverb plugin to use, and i don't knw if i should use be reverb on the insert or as a send........i will be really glad to learn this technique
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice 2 года назад
There isn't exactly a "should" which is really the point of this video. The important idea is what you're trying to do, because there's probably a number of ways to get there. For me, I like a short, open, and fairly tonally neutral reverb for the kick and the Relab is very easy for getting that. But you can really work any reverb into this if you're careful about your settings.

Hey mate great channel! What’s on your 808 chain in this instance? Thanks and huge shout outs from Melbourne Australia!
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Год назад
Aside from the splitter it's basic EQ and compression on this one. The 808 already had a really distinct texture, so no need to reinvent the wheel.

@WeissAdvice

I can. Honestly, the most important thing is just controlling the amount of sub you're letting ring out. EQ out the excess lows.

i like to have the stereo 808 on a send and only have the sides so it completely disappears when in mono leaving the dry 808 strong

Would you use this technique with real drums and bass guitar or just 808 style kick and bass?
@WeissAdvice
@WeissAdvice Год назад
Some of these techniques for sure. We put reverb on live kicks all the time - that's what overheads and room mics are doing. Chorusing bass guitar - sure, from time to time. Sidechaining I don't do as much because it tends to disrupt the rhythm of the bass on live guitar. Nothing is off the table - but I don't advise doing things for the sake of doing things either.
