I have been contemplating an Archimedes screw low head turbine for myself. Did you say no submerged intake? Seems that would be a major problem to running when it is all frozen.
I never really looked into an Archimedes screw as to how efficient they are. yes, I would like to do a submerged intake if I go with a Kaplan turbine as that was I still be able to pull water when the ice is on and not have to worry about air getting in the penstock or it freezing as it would be below the frost line. how much head do you have?
well, we are going into winter right now and have had freezing already so testing will have to wait till next year, not much fun playing in the water when it's cold out. might try some small scale testing at home. not dead just got to wait
that's the way I leaning towards as well but the cold and ice build-up has me a little worried I might have to just fully inclose the wheel inside a building to keep it from freezing. I really don't have that much debris. thanks for the input where did you get your wheel steel or wood?
@@mog5858 3/4" treated plywood. I will rebuild it out of something more durable once I settle on the bucket design and width. You can find photos of it on facebook under Joe Carte
Is the view of the water flow at the lowest flow? Depending on how much water you can hold back you might achieve an intermittent good flow. Good luck with it
