Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds, although it does not win the title for most pleasant name, it has recently won the title in The Times, for being 'The prettiest village in the UK'. And when you look at the competition that it has all around it in the Cotswold Region alone, you know that it is a place you need to visit.
Not big by any means, with a population of around 250 people, it is very easy to miss.
This stunning village sits on the River Eye and can be found 4 miles South West of Stow-on-the-Wold and is about 3 miles away from the picturesque Bourton-on-the-Water, AKA The Venice of the Cotswolds. Making this region of the country a haven for those wishing to see places of beauty.
With a history dating back over 1,000 years, the incredible parish is home to the Lower Slaughter Manor, mentioned in the Domesday Book and given to Knight Philip de Sloitre by William the Conqueror, now converted to a luxury hotel.
It is home to an old mill, that has now been converted to a museum/café and has lots of exhibits to see and purchase.
It is home to St Mary's Church, initially built in the 12th century, but modernised and rebuilt by Benjamin Ferrey back in 1867.
There is the Beautiful Slaughters Country Inn that has rooms available for weary travellers as well as refreshments and a garden that allows you to enjoy them on the bank of the River Eye, overlooking the Copse Hill Street. The Street which has been voted the most romantic street and when you walk down it you will see why. It was voted for by about 20,000 won the Google street award for most romantic street back in 2011.
If you fancy moving to this unique and picturesque village, ensure you have plenty of cash ready, as the average house price is currently £845,000! But when you walk around you can see why and yes, it is probably worth it...
