The deep spots are where the giant floating dredges were working and dredging up gold bearing gravels. All of the waste that came out of the dredge is called Tailings and those were piled up where you see the piles. Great looking fish.
Thanks for the clarification mobiltec. Another river that has those massive deep holes from dredging is the middle fork american and also the nork fork yuba to some extent in spots.
I never seem to time it right and rarley see them, though I have heard that if you are there when they are egg laying and the fish are on them, it is great dry fly fishing.
Ah my home river! It's been really really good this year and lots of big rainbows/ steelhead in there now. and second the Swalla hatch, that is really really fun!
The weather was awesome and it felt like winter is finally behind us now. I doubt I would fish the lower Yuba again though. Have to work so hard to for a few fish if you are lucky and the fish are biting that day. I think it is more of a boat fishery.

@@akintomeatloaf Thanks ATM. I never had much luck on the lower Y and don't care to fish it much as it is so fickle with the fishing and also crowds. I felt very fortunate to sneak into a few good spots where no one was fishing to be able to get those two fish.
Great video. It's been over thirty years since I fished that section of Yuba. I used to pay for the mines property access to get to the river, but I had lost contact from the property owner. Would really love to get in touch with the current property owner to get access again. If you don't mind, I would like to ask where is the nearest access point to reach the section of the river next to the rock quarries. I would rather not walk up the river from the highway 70 bridge. Thank you!!!
Sure did. Too bad my video didn't capture it, but at one point, the fish had gone over that log near me, then back out under the log so I had to fight him keeping the rod low and in the water before I was able to muscle him back "over" the log, LOL. I thought for sure I was going to lose him multiple times. Very wily fish!

Nice going...been chasing rod bending arm hurting bows for years up here.. something about these fish...you get into a good wild one and you got a battle...Twice I've lost huge fish chasing them thinking they were too tired to do that again....WRONG! One was a 40-45 hen King fresh up in the Feather...she'd run about 150 yards ...my line would be going down River and she'd be jumping River! I wouldn't even let two boats pass...some old man watched the whole thing across the River... anyhow..three times...I'd get her right up to me in shallow water and she'd just start slapping her face against the rocks...then she'd turn and bolt...tail walk several times...the fourth time I thought she'd was too tired to shake vigorously... I WAS WRONG! SHE GOT AWAY .. an hour and 45 min... peace... beautiful River
I had kind of an odd question. In your nymphing DVD you say to have the length of the leader as long as or shorter than the length of your rod. Do you mean the combined length of the leader AND the nymph rig? So from top to bottom, if I'm using a 10 ft rod, should my leader/tippet be 10ft or 12 ish feet long?
Between 10-12' is good for a short line for tight lining with a 10' rod. Euro leaders/long lines will be around 12' or greater. Leader length will include the nymph rigging section.
@@caseysayre4250 Thanks Casey, greatly appreciated! Unfortunately I lost access to the channel so I can't move the videos. I will be posting a lot on the new one though moving forward, and will be back fishing in CA/NV this fall (in Idaho right now).
I haven't heard of anyone fishing it much (south fork yuba) and when I have researched it in the past I found nothing and a long time guide that fished the lower yuba & north fork yuba didn't fish there. I agree, that when driving along I-80 there looks like some nice water.
