Middle Fork Feather River Fishing - 6/23/18
(replaced the old video that didn't have sound-sorry about that!)
#8 Rubber Legs on the dropper and a #16 Frenchie on point--the Frenchie caught almost all the fish. 15' French or Euro leader was used.
Very tough trying to walk along the riverbank and had to occasionally rock climb. There were also rattlesnakes about, as some people at the campground had just seen one before I walked by them.
Check out the blog! Look for the same day for more information about the the video post:

I believe the trout on the middle fork are all wild. I fished Carmack mine many times in my youth and the fish were most beautiful trout I've seen anywhere. Thanks for the post.

Thanks Craig! Totally agree about the beauty of the fish. I marveled at times some of the colors and red hues on the fish. They fought very hard for their size as well. Can't wait to fish it again later this year after runoff!

Thanks for posting, I fished the Middle Fork for decades, Oddie Bar, No Ear Bar, etc. etc.just about every mile from of river, had great success with Gold Ribbed Hairs Ear Nymph fished dead drift straight up stream on very long leaders.

Hey PD...That's my favorite river..it really is an amazing place... Punch up Kayaking Poe Dam.... If Lake Oroville fills within 80 feet of capacity starting in April All that snow melt ... West Branch dumps into lake Oroville and huge Rainbow trout in the lake try to go up river but get pooled up at the bottom of Poe Dam...10-15 lb Rainbow trout trying to jump up... Google it...bring a 75 foot length of rope ...I tie off on rebar and repel down to the footing... awesome 👍🙏❤️💪🇺🇲

Another good watch, the indicator looks like its good for achieving distance (I've never used one-my local rivers don't carry anywhere near the volume of water as yours do). I bought the download for your video-its excellent, for me, your formula was right-concentrating on the fishing rather than the catching, good technical info too, a very good reference video, well worth the fee.
@purpledrakefishing

Thanks Jaques--very glad you have enjoyed the video. What country/area are your local streams? Indicators are definitely a great help on the larger rivers and are good when you want to cover a lot of water fast and want to explore a new river.

I'm in central France, we have some rivers with wide stretches, but mostly small streams and rivers where you have to very cautious. Further south, there are rivers like yours, running down from the alps. The Angling Association above mine have a couple of videos, they , and my association are gradually introducing No Kill stretches, the rivers and streams only carry reasonable water after heavy rain,it usually takes 48 hours before they start to run clear as the levels start to drop. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QqYvRJETBVc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7X70SK4Bn00.html , my streams are most often bordered with Alder trees, often forming a tunnel. you catch more trees than trout lol.

Just watched the two videos--very nice looking river in the video with the larger stream. Reminds me of the limestone creeks/rivers in Pennsylvania (Penns Creek (my favorite trout stream), Fishing Creek, ect). I just got the book Nymphing the New Way which has Julien Daguillanes on the cover and is about fishing with the French leader (or Euro nymphing as it is nicknamed here in the US). I am going to start experimenting soon with the more traditional French leader. Haven't tried a leader over 20 feet yet, or used the long leaders for dry fly fishing, ect. Also going to start tying some of Julien's favorite nymphs that are shown in the book.

Such a nice stretch of river, what a shame. I think the fire ripped through right where I was fishing. It should bounce back in a few years hopefully.

The mf american has some monster wild browns and rainbows but it's a difficult river to fly fish due to the terrain and character of the river and it's very deep in most spots. Most people who target that river like myself are spin fisherman. Also while there are access points a majority of the river is only accessible by whitewater rafting. A really expensive way to go about it is the rise up river trips where you go with a guide and rip streamers for the big fish in remote canyon wilderness. The easy access spots get kinda fished out. My biggest bow out of there was like 5 or 6 lbs and many browns from 2-5 lbs using nightcrawlers or panther Martins. I release all the big ones and occasionally keep a deep hooked little one or two. Need to try out the feather sometime with the fly rod.

Thanks SS--I was fishing near where the Quincy-La Porte road bridge first crosses the river near the Redbridge Campground--upstream to Sloat or downstream for many miles in the canyon from that bridge is good fishing.

PD - love your vids - did you try a "dry" set up on this part of the river?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
Thanks Mark--I was tempted at times as sometimes the fish would attack the orange pasla indicator I had on my sighter. I saw a couple of golden stones and salmon flies, and there was a small hatch of orangish #14 mayflies that I have never seen before.

I forgot to ask- is that a glassfibre rod you are using?, oh, and btw, you make a good point about hooks being sharp-they can get dulled hitting the rocks, I have a neat hook sharpener I got from orvis some years ago, well worth having one on your vest/chest pack whatever.

It is graphite, a Sage Pulse 10' 3wt. It makes casting the long leaders much easier.

Nice video again. Did you use 2 AB shots at 8:30 deep pool? My goal is to fish the river successfully like you do, haha.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks Greg--I was using only weighted flies and no split shot that day. The weighted fly (rubber legs) I was using was .6 grams, so it was close to what one AB split shot is. That pool was very deep, probably 15-20', and my nmphs were just suspending about 5' below the surface. I found that is the best way to nymph that type of water as the fish are not on the bottom and are looking up for their food.

My friend Mike B. and I just put this on our 2019 spring/summer calendar for a two to three-night fly-fish camping trip -- do you know when the water will be reasonable visavis CFS given the 2018-19 snowpack? I noted a campers pic of the area dated May 2018, .... perhaps we can find the flows online -- any thoughts PD?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
I fished it in late June last year and the flows seemed perfect. I am guessing with the larger snowpack this year, early to mid July would be good. Here is a gauge I just found that is downstream about 10 miles of where I fished: www.dreamflows.com/graphs/day.054.php I don't know what the cfs was when I fished last June. I think the flows this June will be too high to fish comfortably in the canyon area.

@@purpledrakefishing Yeah sorry There's a "middle fork river" that runs through there as well lol thats my bad! Any patterns that work well this time of year that I should use? I will talk to some local shops as well. From what I gather wooly buggers, squirmy wormys, eggs, and zebra midges are going to be my best bet. Thanks!

Ops, LOL. I just googled it and got NC. I am not too familiar with the MFF, as that was my first time fishing it so I am not sure where blowing rock is exactly. I was fishing in the upper section. Yes, I think any of those patterns you mentioned will work great, especially the squirmy wormys. Good luck on your trip!

Sure Luke-- For the Euro leader I was using, I had a 4x standard 9' mono knotless leader (Rio) which I cut back to about 5-6' long. I then had a 4' piece of 8'lb fluoro line (seagaru invivx). From there I had a 18" Rio sighter material, then below that, about 4-5' of 5lb fluoro line. For the rigging I had two flies with a top one called the dropper which was just about 5" of the tag end from a surgeon's knot, then below that about 22" to the bottom or point fly. I was using split shot (size bb) placed above the dropper knot. I would put and indicator, when using it, on the sighter material or below it depending on the water depth.

PD, I have fished this fishery about 5 times. There are 2 4wd only campsites in the middle of the canyon, Cleghorn bar, and Stag Point. I made it down to both camps with a stock Toyota Tacoma 4wd, I am always concerned about getting out, although I have not had a problem. I understand your point about hiking around down there, it's stuff,, and the canyon is steep. This is a temperamental fishery because it's a freestone, and there is a little window of opportunity between high water and the water being to warm. Honestly, you hit at the perfect time. I think this would be a great fishery to hit in late October to early winter, depending on the rain. Specially, the 4wd camps, minimal people, cool water, and low flow would make it easier to get around. Here is a video of getting out of Cleghorn. Thanks for sharing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WqesRRFMQN8.html

I was looking at the google maps satellite when researching the river and thought that water looked amazing, just the effort though to get to it! I don't think my car could make that drive in that video--lol, that took some guts. I am tempted to give the canyon deeper in the wilderness downstream this fall with a long hike. My first time on the MFF and was impressed with the wilderness experience and the hatches (saw goldens, salmonflies, ect).
