I get a lot of questions about whether or not someone should go LPN, RN or BSN. In this video I break down the costs and time of each route. Keep in mind that the figures discussed in this video are based on my location (St.Louis, MO).

LPN/LVN program 1st, get nursing license, work(=money, skill building & experience : ) then grow...there are many traditional, distance learning & hybrid(combination of online, classroom & clinical study) ADN & BSN RN options. Time spent progressing is not wasted

I agree with this perspective. For me, it makes the most sense. I spent yrs working on prereqs and getting my AS in Sports Med (same prereqs as nursing ADN) but i got sick of waiting (and bartending) so i have chosen to pay for an lvn program bc like you said, ill atleast be making money and gaining experience while i wait. Also, the lvn program i chose fits my family schedule very nicely. Lvns in my area start around 27/hr and top put at 40+/hr. There are tons of bridge programs for lvn to bsn in my area as well. The lvn route is "longer" but when you factor in waiting times and the money im NOT making while i wait, lvn makes the most sense for me and my family. Im making a better wage while i wait and building my skills and resume 👌 i like it lol
@jlov3420
@jlov3420 2 года назад
I going straight for my ADN. Because I'm too old to wait and I have so availability to take a couple years off to focus on school. I don't wait to go do LPN and in the future don't have the time to further my career.

This video will help so many Nurses!! Like you mentioned every state is different. I have a friend in Ohio who's daughter went for her LPN which took 12 months, then a "Bridge RN program" immediately after getting her LPN, that took another 12/15 months, (all at the same private school) she then went for the BSN and just finished her RN BSN, it took her 3.5 years total! She is now entering into the Nurse Practitioner program this fall. She just kept going!

Do you mind saying how much it was all and all? Private school here for lvn is 38k 5k for lvn public school only pre requisite is CNA license (1k and 3 months of school) with two classes as pre req. so you can finish the pre req in one semester under 1500
@Pllm30
@Pllm30 Год назад
It took her longer than that because it takes 2 years to finish just pre-reqs. No way someone went to nursing school and studying pre-reqs at the same time. So much misinformation.
@dropexpectations12
@dropexpectations12 Год назад
@@Pllm30 no, this is true, it may not take 2 years for pre req, she was being VERY conservative. My friends got her lpn then RN (associates ) in 3 and then took her accelerated rn to bsn 1.5 years

I think if you’re straight out of high school living with your parents with hardly and or no bills, and your parents are paying for school, DEFINITELY go the BSN- it’s a no brainer! However, if you’re someone who’s changing careers and or someone who still needs to work to pay your bills then maybe LPN route is best as it allows you to graduate in a year & have a huge increase in salary and with that increased salary you can fund your PN-RN ETC. You’ll also feel like you have an advantage while in the bridge program because you have that background experience of LPN.

I’m currently at a university and I work full time as a tech in the ER. My cost of living is becoming intense. I would rather take the LPN route. The program is allowing me to transfer my pre-requisite classes that I’ve already done which will shorten my length of time in school when I go for my RN bridge program. I would rather take the LPN route because while I’m finishing up some classes at the end of the day I’ll already be a nurse making a decent income that saves me from living check to check working as a tech. Plus it’s a great look on your resume for experience in the hospital and LPNs have tons of job opportunities in my state. Don’t listen to people who speak very negatively about LPNs because it’s actually a wonderful role as a way of starting your nursing career. I work with a lot of them who love what they do and bridging to RN is a breeze for them as an LPN cause they can finish their degree while have the ability to afford housing or apartments and other necessities.
@vanessawhite2800

I forgot to add I would do the lpn route because I am currently working a full-time job and I am the single mother of three boys. If it's going to take me time I'd rather have an LPN under my belt. However if I was 18 again no kids I would absolutely take the BSN route.

Thank you for this breakdown. I wanted to do my LPN then realized I could get a ADN in two years and take the NCLEX-RN. The program cost is approximately $43k. At first I thought it was too much, but after a little digging I notice the waiting lists at the com colleges are 2-3yrs long. That's crazy! The sooner I can start working, the better. I'm already 33 and changing career... Lord knows I don't wanna be working with my back bend😅

I’d you like that route? There is a LPN program in my state for $3,000 with a one year waiting list. I already have my general AA. Nursing has been on my heart for awhile but with working full time I can’t go to RN school without quitting my job and finding a part time job that works with it (not making great money). LPN’s make $25 in my state with very flexible schedules. So that’s why I want to take that route.

Hi, This is an excellent cost-time breakdown. My son is in the 4th year of a BSN program. With plans to get a DNP, the traditional route was the most cost-time efficient. Our decision was also driven by the competitive process and with the traditional BSN route, he only had to compete once to get in. With scholarships, the BSN route came substantially under priced. Thanks!

I am signed up to obtain an associates degree and get my LVN certificate at the same time it's a 17 month course. it's expensive but it's good for me it gets me into the nursing field efficiently it's a 38'000$ program because it is very thorough and it's a full-time course it's got a&p and math and comprehension and reading etc and volunteer work clinical etc.. all built into the program I am extremely excited about the program and of course, excited about becoming a Nurse and a professional health care worker. it's something I've wanted to do for a good while and now am finally able to do it. I am fortunate that my program is only 17 month's and I earn an associate's degree as well as an LVN certificate, I do plan to get my R.N. / ADN once I begin working.

My LPN program was 1 year & $6,000 w/everything. ADN is 1 year & about $9,000. (for me). I had a grant for my pre-reqs. All schools and states vary. Just find what’s best for you. Applying for grants & scholarships can definitely help.

Indiana has a few programs that would actually work great for someone who starts as an LPN with a community college. And the state also will pay for your LPN certificates. Plus universities give priority to ASN who come from certain community colleges and all previous credits transfer. This video shows how expensive tuition is it’s insane. So always look for grants and scholarships a lot of hospitals offers them some LTC too.

Cool video, my college does competitive placement into the nursing program so everyone that applies has like a 4.0 GPA or close to it. I also did what u said in the video. While ur waiting to get placed into the program (takes one semester while they sort out ) I took those corequisites so I didnt have to take them later and I had the entire semester off while I was waiting anyway so might as well get it done.

Great video! Its also important to consider, can you work and earn money while in the program? In the bsn straight program no, but the other two, yes. Also can you get part of your education paid for? In the rn to bsn, most people i know get their adn at the community college, and get hired right away as an rn. Then their employer pays for the rn to bsn while they continue to work. This can also be true of lpns working and their employer pays for their rn. Now... free is the way to go! Especially when school is free AND you are being paid to work in your field at the same time! Deletes a huge chunk of change from those totals in the lpn-rn-bsn and the rn-bsn options.
@Pllm30
@Pllm30 Год назад
Relying on your employer to pay for your education is not wise. Programs are cut all the time. Do not hold your breath on employers paying for your education, they just drag their feet. Also, you will be working 12 hour shifts and dog tired. Who has time to go back to school when you are that tired? You really won't have time. It's best to get it out of the way.

Whew. I did a comparison of the local schools in my area. There are alot of community programs that cover nursing schooling. So it's common to get your LPN with little to no money owed. I'm in Illinois. Springfield has an accelerated program that lasts 9 months. And the LPN to ADN bridge program at the CC is 1 year. ADN to BSN is 4. ADN Nursing program by itself is a little over 9K. I'm 2.5 hours from St Louis on the IL side.

Don't forget different programs have different requirements. When I was applying another technical school did a point system. Most have some kind of nursing exam or general studies exam to pass. They'll have a minimum score to apply and that'll be nowhere near what you need to get in for example my school had the 75 minimum to apply but I got a 89 to get in.

The waits aren’t really that long tho. You can apply to Rn or even bsn after taking the specific courses they want. For most bsn programs now they want A&P 1-2, microbiology, college math and statistics, sociology, psychology and developmental psychology, and electives but you can APPLY to the school as soon as you get most of these courses done just as long as they’re done by the time the program is about to start. For an ADN program you don’t even need all of those to start. You can start at around 1.5 years or so and if you take a diploma Rn program it would be cheaper.

Wow this video is very informative but my one of my nursing instructor went the first route. She did her classes two at a time and now she has a master and full time instructor. Community College of Philadelphia are $159 per credit hr. So your preq equal to about 6,000 or 7,000. They accept student twice a year. Regular and advanced placement. But there are many community College in Pennsylvania that offer nursing. One that admits three times and has a part-time program. Camden Lpn program is 8,459. The Rn program is 17,452 and its diploma program. We still have diploma program as well in Pennsylvania.

I'm in California both ADN and BSN are almost the same in competitiveness so might as well really try for the better grades and go BSN. I heard LVNs have a hard time bridging where I live from competitiveness so with the good pay and having to get prereqs done people get stuck at LVN. It already pays really well though so it's not bad.

In Maryland I can't find an LPN program without prereqs. Some people travel to the surrounding DMV areas like Washington D.C or Virginia. For my school the LPN preqs (A&P I and II, Microbiology, English 101, and Psychology 101) are almost the same as the RN preqs with the exception of (Sociology, Developmental Psych, Statistics, World lit, Speech, Chem,) maybe some others I forgot. I took them all but will do LPN first for time and financial reasons. The good thing is at my school LPN is 1 year of RN so you just complete two additional semesters. Also the Community colleges are offering a Dual enrollment programs for RN/BSN there is no bridge because you are doing both programs at the same time.

That’s absolutely wild I live in California … Fresno to be exact (in between LA and San Francisco) I’m at the community college level for my LPN Program . There are 6 pre reqs that’s about 3 years. Most of the students I have talked to have spent that amount of time because you have no choice. you have to complete these pre reqs before you can even apply. If you do LVN or RN having to work while continuing to BSN sounds like a pain in the ass. I'm doing ABSN since I already have a bachelors and the price for the program is good.

Wow, that's crazy. My community college requires pre-reqs for LPNS: all the humanities/gen-eds including AP1 & Micro and they all transfer into the RN bridge. Our total cost is more per credit hour but less credits needed. We only need 4 classes to bridge. I have other degrees so my LPN transferred in credits and did the same for the RN. For me it cost about $12,000. But for students who have to take their pre-reqs for both RN and LPN programs together it's about $23-25,000.
