Your already excellent channel has improved. The amount of information conveyed by your narration passes greater knowledge. Concise, precise and direct. The subtle accent is spot on. Congratulations and thank you.
Quality/Disciplined shooting practice,....& as always excellent informative video - Thanks SO much fer sharing !!.....never miss a video from you & Rondane Longrange - always inspirational - Thanks Again !!
@@danmacdonald1291 Thanks for the encouragement Dan, but I don't see that anytime soon. Finished up another episode last night and started a new one this morning. Trying to learn audio and have ordered some new microphones/ camera to up the sound and target images.
Always a pleasure to see your Videos! Great shots! Technikel perfect and a every time spiced with a bit fun. I like it! Greetings from Germany! Andreas
Thanks Andreas, hope the season is treating you well. Was just away in Ireland as travel restrictions have somewhat lifted, good to see deer again. They were working with labradors, soft and steady dogs but perhaps a little too keen to move forward.
Building up your position and consequentially your natural point of aim was the biggest eye opener for me. The gun shoots itself when you're setup right, just apply the same principles to whatever position you're in.
Absolutely. I intended to shoot the rifle eyes closed to show how much you get from position alone, but forgot about it. Will try to remember repeating that when I start filming how-to windcall. Right now it's all rain & hunting.
@@THLR Funny you mention eyes closed shooting. An eyes closed group shooting drill I did during a long range class is what made me realize the absolute importance of natural POA.
Love the content. Now you’ve got me looking into a Triggercam and questioning my methods of not bringing the rifle up to me! I tend to get sore after a day of laying prone. I think I am using too many muscles.
Yeah, you're definitively not supposed to be sore. It is not that success is impossible in other positons, but it's more predictable and consistent with a relaxed position.
Glad you liked it Peter, will have the next episode available in November. It's a bit difficult to find the words, I catch myself being less than precise quite a few times.
Excellent video sir! You sad something very important.. "Bring the rifle up to you." That's true! I think the idea of laying so low as possible, probably comes from the military. THLR.NO is better than ever👌😊
Hey, Thanks a lot for a great series. Amazing work - I have just found your channel and basically last 2 days is nothing else to watch. I would have a question on the "significant numbers". Understood that it is related to the BC but was not able to find a way to fit to my bullet. I use multiple calibres for hunting and frankly the BDC style correction where I can adjust easilly is so helpfull! Thanks for sharing the info with me! Martin
Significant changes will most likely be fully explained in episodes 369-370. But set ballistic calculator to 1 meter resolution, prod with a weather change of 10C OR 30-50hPa, compare to your base trajectory and you'll likely see it. If your base trajectory says 500m 30 clicks, you want to see at what ranges 30 enters and exits the changed trajectory when you set resolution to one.
I have a question. How long will a barrel last? our hunting leader( for lack of a better word) says that his 7mm remington should last between 500-1000 bullets depending on barrel quality, cleaning and how hot the barrel gets everytime he's shooting. which to me sounds like a years worth of ammunition. But about how long should a 6,5x55 barrel last?
It's to difficult to give any precise answers. Depends on caliber, powder used, steel quality, manufacturing process and induvidual shooting style, precision requirement and possibly cleaning regime. I don't do any break-in on my barrels, I just start shooting and over the years I've been cleaning less and less (allthough I do oil the barrel after every shoot). The 6 XC I just shot probably hasn't been cleaned (brushed) in >300 rounds of molycoated bullets. As for barrel longevity I retire the barrel the same day I start seeing fliers, meaning I miss my target for unexplained reasons. For 6,5x284 that seemed to be around 2500rds and 6,5x55 seems to do 4-5000. My 221 Fireball I expect to last "forever": Sorry, most precise answer I could give.
It's more Bc reliant. A higher BC bullet can significantly increase the tolerance. I typically prod with 30/7 when I check the calculations for any bullet in the Bc range of G1 0,45-0,55. With my 300 Norma and Hornady 225gr ELD M the pressure tolerance was 50 and I cannot quite remember what temp was.
Hi man! It's me again! You must seriously consider making a series of video about "trying to improve how to treat my rifle"🤣🤣🤣🤣 ahaha great content as always!
Thank you Thomas for another very helpful video. When you say to pull the rifle back into your shoulder, how much pressure are you using and are you pre-loading the bipod first?
I'm not sure what the definition of preload is, but the rifle is forward until metal meets metal in the bipod, no further pressure. As for the firing hand, I had to "reprogram" my shooting style when I cut my hand, rifle instructor Marc Taylor has written so well about my current process that I think the words are best left to him rather than me parroting them www.snipershide.com/precision-rifle/mechanics-of-the-firing-hand/
@@THLR Thank you for taking the time to reply and supplying the link to Marc Taylor’s training. I have been using a similar technique and wondered if I was doing the right thing, so his article was very useful. Cheers!
Hi. Could you do something on how to shoot in heavily inclined terrain. I am hunting in the mountains and the slopes are between 15 degree and 20 degree. Today I had to let go off two roe deers because I could not find a comfortable and stable position. Distance was 280 m.
Howdy, Thomas. Just waiting for Netflix to catch ya up 😂.....Anyway, would the effect of temp/ pressure be constant, no matter what kind of bullet you send through the air? Meaning, can you expect the same correction in respect for lower temp / higher pressure for a 140 gr / 6,5 bullet as for a 250 gr/ 9,3 bullet?
I would be interested in learning about what product you use to coat your rifles and also how you coat them with it. Also, do you still shoot the 6.5x284 Norma? That has always seemed like an excellent cartridge to me. What are your experiences with barrel burnout with that cartridge? Seems to me that 6.5x284 Norma trumps 6.5 Creedmore. I really don't care about having a shorter cartridge. All the best
No not for the moment, but expect to use it again due copper bullets (want max V0). I retired my x284 barrels around 2500 rds when they started to produce fliers. I use aircuring Cerakote, since I don't bother with cosmetic appearance I simply degrease and spray. On the stocks I also use plastic primer and acrylic spray, the R8 stock (this rifle) is coated like that
@@THLR I would like to get your opinion on a scheme that I have been conjouring up. Let me know if you concur. It goes like this: purchase the R8 in 6.5x284 and select a lighter bullet and powder combination that mimics the 6.5x55 Swede - this will aid in barrel conservation and will be more than plenty for the white-tailed deer that I primarily hunt in the thick northern forests of the midwest US. Then, when it's time to head west to hunt elk and caribou, I can load the 6.5x284 up to its higher pressures/velocities. I forgot to mention that I reload (Dillon 550b). Also, do you prefer to have a steel decocker on your Blazers? I remember when I first picked up an R8 with a synthetic decocker and something just felt odd. Thank you for your responses, your channel has always been quite inspiring. All the best
@@thomaspeterson3797 I have nerve damage and am no fan of metal in cold weather, so I take plastic over steel whenever possible. Elk I am not familar with, but why bother with two bullet weights? I'd go 140'ish gr all the way and rather use slow/fast load with same powder. Possibly load a few cartridges with 120-130gr if I already had the bullets. I suspect the Blaser barrel with scope mounted on it would print both loads close enough to "nevermind" the POI change. Mind you, this is for ease of logistics only, if you enjoy reloading go ahead with your plan - I'm usually in a pinch for time and go for the simplest solutions and try to keep as few flavours of components as I can. I'm not that familiar with powders as so many new are on the market, but something along Norma MRP burnrate. Vitahouri has several new powders as well. Not sure what their US equivalents would be.
I am willing to buy a blaser r8 ultimate. What barrel would you recommand? The standaard, semi weight or the match? Can you explain how you come to a choice?
I only use the standard barrels, ø17mm, cut them to 50cm and mount a silencer. The semi-weight or match profiles add only weight and cost for me. It's the same blanks machined on the same machines, so should be no difference in quality.
@@THLR thank you for the reply! In blog 204 at minute 1 you show that you use a semi weight barrel for the 300 win mag caliber? Isnt it so that a havier barrel shoots with lees recoil, moor accurate en with lees vibrations? Maybe academici stuff you dont need in real live as you show with your performance. Nice to know i can do well with the normal barrels!!
300 Norma not Winmag. It is a significantly more powerful cartridge, pushing the heaviest 30 cal bullets almost 100 msec faster. A heavier will give less felt recoil, that is physics. Usually less recoil makes the rifle easier to shoot. But a heavy rifle can also limit the positions you will be able to use shooting, effectively reducing the shots you can take.
They are related to the ballistic coefficiency number. The 7/30 values seems to hold true for G1 0.5. With my 300NM and 230gr Berger G1 0.7 was approximately 12/50 if I recall correct. Lindroth & Norin made Longrange Shooting 2 where the mining process is explained in detail. It should be on Vimeo, possibly also on MOTV.
Kliber 6,5 x 55
@@THLR I'm thinking it can act as a training aid because a shooter can go back and review shots and say "okay my NPA here was not good" or "my recoil management sucks" then go back and make corrections to those errors.
@@jv6509 I'll agree to that. It really lets you focus on the shooting and review your wobble and aim for next training session. But it helps to speak so you'll hear what you are looking at.
Vurdert 6.5 PRC?
You'll vust through that performance roof eventually and it will become very easy. Considering that pulling the trigger is only 1 to 2 seconds, it gets an inordinate amount of focus for hunters. Pulling the trigger will do no good if you're not in the right place.
