TURBO LS INTAKE TEST-TRUCK, LS1, LS6, TBSS, FAST & FAB-WHO WINS?
THE QUESTION IS DOES RUNNER LENGTH OR INTAKE DESIGN ACTUALLY MATTER UNDER BOOST? I MEAN DOESN'T BOOST JUST TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING? CHECK OUT THIS SERIES OF LS INTAKE MANIFOLD TESTS WHERE I COMPARED INTAKES ON 4.8L, 5.3L AND 6.0L APPLICATIONS, BOTH NA AND UNDER BOOST. DOES BOOST CHANGE WHAT THE INTAKE DESIGN DOES?

Love your videos. Great educational experience and I love the debunk material. You always give enough information for us armatures to make a logical informed decision irregardless of the rpm range you want to run. For me it will almost always be an engine operating range under 5500-6000 rpm. Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the higher rpm stuff. Everyone’s operating conditions are correct for them. You’ve always been excellent in your presentations, always giving everyone the information they need in a clear concise manner that everyone understands. Thank you for always sharing your information with all.

A lot of VW owners use maxspeedingrods connecting rods and short runner intake manifolds in their budget builds. A friend and I built an engine with their rods and they were a better balanced set than the factory stuff. I think it was something like .5 grams on the rods. The stock pistons had a lot more deviation between cylinders.

gale banks lays out the dynamics of gas versus diesel a gas engine will make 20% more torque with the same cubic inchThe only reason diesels make torque is because they have small turbos that boost off idle 6.0 with a hx40 at 7 lbs would be perfect it would just choke at 4k

I think that would be very easy to accomplish but you would need some good rods and pistons and a couple of T3 T4 China hybrids instant spool
@MRBoatwrights
@MRBoatwrights 3 года назад
@@danielsullivan9865 I was thinking good rods, some type of good forged piston, head studs and good gaskets. Drill the main bearing oil gallery for piston cooling jets. The biggest oil pan you can fit in the chassis, high capacity engine oil cooler. Work out the turbo arrangement for quick spool and maximum torque up to about 4500 it does not matter past that point. I would want to be able to set the throttle at 4000 and pull a long grade without having to worry about it melting down. The over all hp number does not matter torque is what gets the work done. Building this type of engine requires an entirely different mind set from building a high HP race engine.

@@Sdukes001 I worked as a Paramedic from 04 to 16 we had a whole fleet of 4500 cutaway modular ambulances with a GVW of 13500lbs. The company bought duramax/allison chassis until 2010 then switched over to 6.0 gas/6L85 chassis due to emissions and having to have def. They didn't want the chance of failure or going into limp mode on an emergency call. The gas engines got 8.5 mpg the diesels about 11.5. The gas chassis was $10000 less at purchase and the mantanice cost was less over the life of the truck. The fleet manager told me the gas trucks where cheaper to operate even with significantly less mpg. The truck where replaced between 275000 and 300000 miles the gas trucks ran just as long and where still in excellent condition when they where replaced. I was never broken down on the side of the road or had one run hot. There was times at a car wreck or other major event one would sit on the side of the road in 100° heat with the AC wide open and the emergency lights on with the high idle at 1600rpm and the temp hand never move off normal. This experience sold me on late model gm gas engines.

You doing a great work, thanks for the great content 👍 It just crossed my mind, that the runners length is tuned based on neny factors, the speed off sound is one of those, speed of sound is effected by temperature. So if my theory is right, the power curve switch higher in the rpms if you don't run a intercooler, yeah its much lower because density but where it makes those peak numbers should in theory be just a thatch higher 🤔

Being unbiased is so rare these days. I'm sick of what's left of the magazine industry, all they do now is "we install a xyz part and wow is it great" there is no more "we put 351w heads on a 302 to make more power(for example). Or doing one ton axle swaps from the junkyard, it's always "we went to abc diff company and installed their diff, wow it's great) That said Richard, I can't stress how valuable what you're doing is. It may seem nothing to you, but you should be compensated somehow. I have young guys come in my shop and I'll school them on intakes, cams, whatever and they are blown away that I freely give out info. I never thought of it any more than "passing on the torch to the younger crowd" but several have said they want to pay me to diagnose, etc. I'm retired and am not interested in running a business, I love engines and just want to pass it on. You are on a whole other level though. Perhaps running some companies stuff(and getting paid to tell the truth) will lead to more companies which would then be "to see how well our products work, see Richards video of them in action." All these claims of hp etc...but what does Richard say?? That's the bar to go by, not what any manufacture say So!

My opinion is, if cost is an issue, boost first and then deal with the other add-ons. Get the biggest bang for your buck...boost...turbocharge or nitrous. Supercharger would not fall into the biggest bang category. The manifold is one of the quickest things to upgrade and can easily done later while you enjoy the fruits of boost until then.

I think running 8s at 160s isn't what most people are doing with their stock engines. At the drags specifically, short runners work really well. You spend all of your time at wot and half your time within 1000rpm of shift point. You also spend more time in the lower gears because the power doesn't roll over as bad. For guys on the street, it's maybe not a great idea but at the strip it can really pay off.

A short runner intake can work if the boost ramp can be controlled some kind of way. For example, a variable geometry turbine hot side can boost torque under the curve to fill in the torque loss or use an electronic boost controller to ramp in the boost sooner. Why not do a test showing the effect of variable geometry turbos versus fixed, and electronic boost controllers vs. mechanical?

That's a lot of LS engines revving to 7000 rpm to make peak power. That may be OK for drag racing, but I'm a road course guy, and am pretty skeptical about long-term (100 track hours) durability when shifting above 6000 rpm. Do you have any examples you can cite of LS engines durability in road course applications? My 2002 LS1 Camaro ran like a champ through 15 years of road course use, accumulating ~180 hours on track. I was very consistent with a 5500 rpm shift point, although I did rev to fuel cutoff (6000) a couple of times to win $$$ in time trials. (What the heck, 50 bucks is 50 bucks.)

Maxspeedingrods, yeah right, try the gt35 turbo, its complete garbage, i have had two of them, the first i bought, the second i got as a replacement, both of them had a bearing issue. The rods however would be interesting on a setup, to see the limit of the rod. Should go 200hp/cyl as every other chinese rod goes.

So on my 6.0 l77 i could runs the Fast manifold it would make more use of the tq. Curve and power band. From the stock manifold currently on the engine which i think its a ls2 manifold? Be safe ! You should run a 1.4 turbo cruze engine and blow the head off it. Because you showed us a 2.4 jdm and it went all the way 8,700 rpms. Thank you for your time .

Richard, crazy question, but I've never seen it tested, can you actually gain horsepower by using high end oils (think amsoil, royal purple, redline) over, say, store brand synthetic, or (god forbid) conventional?

I know, I know.... 'Overall Displacement = Power', but I would still like to see a 6.0L LS Shootout between a factory geometry 6.0L LS and a 6.0L 4" Stroked .20 over 4.8/5.3 block. WHY ? It's the average guy that already owns either a 4.8 or 5.3 that wants more power, so why toss the baby with the bathwater ? Regardless of platform, most guys will buy pistons & rods as a minimum, for peace of mind and the reliability for future added power. Not every 4.8L guy out there wants to solve their under-powered problems with forced induction or a junkyard 6.0L (to start with anyway). NOW, depending on your location, 6.0L longblocks are worth their weight in gold and 4.8's are literally being given away. From Summit's 'Pro' house brand (for instance) a $700 4" Stroker Crankshaft (along with your PURCHASED donor 4.8) is less money than what many people want for a 6.0L longblock. If you already own the 4.8/5.3 ? EVEN BETTER. Either way, machining costs etc will be the same, assuming an overbore. For a Street Car project by way of a Classic Car that weighs a ton, or even a large SUV, the drivability under 6500RPM SHOULD favor the long stroke 6.0L combo in comparison to the factory geometry 6.0L thanks to the stroke. Again, from what I have learned from watching your channel, the overall HP should be very similar, since the displacement will be similar. It's not like back in the 305 days with small bore. We now have good cylinder heads that support that small bore. Feel free to look into the math yourself. Whether you start out currently owning a 4.8/5.3 or need to pick one up from the boneyard for your project, the price of that motor + a 4" stroke crankshaft most times is cheaper than buying a 6.0L for the project. Either way you will buy rods and pistons and everything else will more or less cancel itself out in the end in terms of costs/labor. I simply want to see a realistic daily-driver-hotrod sub-6500RPM comparison and the benefits of achieving displacement using stroke to get to roughly 6.0L, rather than GM's big bore factory geometry offering. This is for those current 4.8/5.3 owners where most wish they had a 6.0L to solve all their problems. No expensive high RPM valvetrain, no over priced intake manifolds and less focus on that big HP number that doesn't help anyone 24/7 daily driving. Power and more importantly, Torque where people actually use it 99% of the time, still with the ability to spin big RPM if they so desire. Thanks for all the great content and sorry for the Novel sized post.
