LS1 vs LS3: Which One is Better?

Article: dustrunnersauto.com/ls1-vs-ls3/
Much like the LS1 vs LS2 debate, the later engine is the better one. The LS3 makes more power than an LS1 and has more potential at the end of the day. The LS3 has better heads, a better intake, and a bigger displacement. But, price limits nearly every car guy. We must pick and choose our parts in order to stay within our allotted budget. For that reason, many of us will end up picking the LS1.
Although we would all love to have to bigger, and better LS3. Most of us just can’t afford it. Like I said in the LS2 vs LS3 debate, I would personally rather have an aluminum 5.3L from a Tahoe. It’s a much cheaper option and it’s nearly just as good as the LS1. All the money you save going with a 5.3L can be put into a set of top-of-the-line cylinder heads.

I love my LS1 it’s built with a cam bigger intake, headers, bigger throttle body. It’s runs great I put 140k miles on it then took it to a open road race in Nevada, raced it took the SS Camaro up to 150mph and then drove it home. Ended up giving the car to my son and he’s driving it now. Can’t beat LS motors.

In Australia the ford turbo barra shit all over the ls motors, a turbo 4.0 in-line six that was torquier across the rpm’s, rock solid reliable, easily pushing 500k kms on original internals, more fuel efficient when off boost and on par when on it, lighter which means better handling and incredibly cheap to mod for big power

I've been a Chevy guy for 40 years - I'm 56 years old so I owned and worked on my share of Chevy small blocks from way back in the day. The interchangeability of parts were great then as now, but the LS was hands down, the greatest innovation in small block V8 technology. I love my 98 Corvette which, other than long tube headers and a cold air intake, is bone stock. The first iteration of the LS1 produces about the same HP bone stock, as the classic factory 396 big blocks from back in the day. Yeah sure, you could cam and upgrade the heads on a 350 or a 283 back in the day, but the most you would typically get out of it was around 350HP. You had to go up to the 396, 400, 427 and 454 big blocks to get into the higher HP ranges. Back then hard core Chevy guys would typically opt to find a 69 or 70 Chevelle SS with a 396 (good motor) but once you got the itch for a big block, Mopars were really the way to go as they ruled that space in that era. But today, the HP upgrade potential for ALL LS motors is something we could have only dreamed about 40 years ago.
@kensnyder2340
@kensnyder2340 4 года назад
Steve, I used to live and breathe the Bowtie as well back in the 60's. We discovered putting the 375HP cam in a 325 HP big block was an Ass kicker without much else. I liked the 440 Mopar better than the BBC though for longevity. The first Roadrunner I put a clutch in was a 1/2 ton truck underneath!! Made the Chevys look kind of tame at the time with the little 10 bolt rear. You're right on with new HP numbers with the LS. Really no need for a BB anymore!

I've been writing about Corvettes for decades for Vette Magazine and you are spot on correct! The LS1 started out at 345-hp in 1997 and went to 350-hp in 2001. The LS3 came out in 2008 rated at 430-hp, an 80-hp bump over the LS1! The LS2 came out in 2005 with 400-hp. However, an LS1 can be goosed easily to 500-hp with bolt-on hardware. But an LS3 with the same bolt-on will be stronger. It all comes down to how deep your pockets are. Excellent video!

You've nailed it bud,it depends how deep the pockets are but generally,it's extremely rare for engineers to design a new engine that performs worse than a previous design,it comes down to bang for buck and how much the benefits of the newer design are worth to a buyer.

A new engine design could have a flaw that reveals itself long after production ends. Builders would then desire the earlier design.

The first lS1 engines did have some cylinder bore and ring issues. That they rectified the issue by the time the last batches were built. The lS3 has more capacity and no inherent design issues. So straight from the factory the lS3 is the clear choice. But when rebuilding engines comes into play it is open for conjecture. 😉😉😉😉😉

Factory engine that got shut down by GM in the early 2000's cause of who knows what. Bang for the buck wise you can't beat the 5.3 lm7 truck motor . They're super cheap there's millions of them around and they can hold a dump ton of boost on a completely stock motor . a healthy stage 3 turbo cam a 76mm turbo port and polish and some 80 lb per hour injectors a better fuel pump and you got a reliable 800 horsepower vehicle . Give it a good forged crank shot peened rods a good set of main bearings healthy cam and some bigger valves maybe a set of roller rockers and some beehive springs and a really good set of pistons and you can run quite a bit of nitrous on it as well . There's quite a few articles out there about how well the 706's actually work and why . As well as dyno proof to back it up . I think super Chevy did the article . Make no mistake there is no replacement for the strength of an iron block . No matter what you do with the truck motor you can be ballin on a budget .

I'm building a daily driver pro touring track car that I can beat and have fun with. I'm mot sure witch motor would be best. Budget is 15k . I will need everything motor ,trans., cooling .driveshaft. fuel tank ect. and as much power as I can get, I would like to boost it but not sure if realistic with only 15k. Or have it built for boost down the road? looking at 6.0 iron block for about 1500k or I found 2011 vet .LS3 for 4k. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. LS3 is basically a bored LS2 4.00" to a LS3 4.065". That's where the 364ci 6.0L to 376ci6.2L comes into play. The biggest change is the larger rectangle intake port and larger valves on the heads. The LS3 is like the little bother of the LS7 that has all the kinks worked out.

Sometimes it's hardly worth upgrading from an LS1 to an LS2 engine because then HSV increased their power output in my model (2002-2004) they got up to 285 Kilowatts just from a change to a higher flowing exhaust system & headers as well as tuning which was 40 kilowatt increase from the stock 245 kilowatt twin exhaust engine. Mine is on par with the stock L76 (6 litre V8) which was fitted from 2006 onwards with the DOD deactivated up until 2009 when they switched it on,HSV did however fit the LS2 between 2004-2006. My LS1 is a 2002 model & Holden ordered all of the LS1's with the more aggressive EGR cam (1999-2000 Camaro camshaft) all the way through but they ordered them with the higher flowing LS6 intake fitted from 2000 onwards. It's particularly the case with the 300 kilowatt LS1 engine (Callaway engine), it's hardly worth upgrading to the 6.2 litre LT1 which has a 304 kilowatt stock power output unless you do at least a tune & exhaust upgrade on that engine !

@PRN 123D No it's far from a common LS7 problem. Yes, there were a batch of valves put in to some LS7 heads that were prone to failure. This was taken care of, and the actual truth is that LS7 heads were never losing valve heads left and right. It strikes me as somewhat common that a lot of people will talk about the LS7 and dropped valves. However, most of these people have never experienced it themselves, nor do they know anybody who has. They have usually never owned an LS7, or much less wrenched on one. All in all, the LS7 is a great engine, and if you ever find yourself buying one, do so without worry of the valves. If you get a used one and plan to run a hot cam in it, upgrade the valves and springs as you normally would.

@@ivanlaney2336 What the he.... Are you so far behind that you've missed the fact, that the LS successor debuted in the C7 Corvette in 2013? In case you are unaware, the Gen V SBC is called the LT, again. Will you also argue that the LS6 was not an engine for the C5, but only a 454 from the 70's? No GM car has been built with an LS engine since 2015 when the trucks and suv's switched to the 5th gen SBC, the LT. The LT you speak of, is basically to the Gen I SBC what the Gen IV LS was to the LS 3rd gen. Same basic platform, but slightly updated. The current LT is to the LS what the LS was to the Gen I/II SBC.
