One thing I was upset about when I submitted an audition video YEARS ago for YTSO was the fact that the PDF available with the music did NOT include the Bolero excerpt, and yet this Masterclass video talks about it. I got disqualified for not playing all the music...

The sound of an e-flat clarinet is unique. Thatäs why it's used!

@MrSmoothSax Oh god yes, I reconize him from a video on here, The Rite of Spring. He played the Eb clarinet and it's part was one of a kind.

Excellent playing, very accurate and beautiful musicality. What mouthpiece and reeds do you use? Thank you!

That's a good question, and the answer is that it depends. For one thing, it depends on your practice habits. To learn any instrument and make actual progress, you need to practice often and well. For example, I practice half and hour to an hour a day, 5-7 days a week. I've been playing a little less than a year. I had trouble in the beginning and made slow progress because I didn't know how to practice effectively, but once I figured out what I was doing, I began to improve more steadily.

If you hear him speak English, he speaks it with an RP British Accent.

With a translation video feature one need not speak Cantonese to get excellent information to study the Eb Clarinet. A nice selection of recital material. 🥂Excellent!

The glass mouthpiece warms the Eb tone, which tends to be shrill. Using it is a good idea.

I think it wood takes for years ago to get a correct result.. Clarinet is not the easier of wind instruments
@Leadimage

One thing is certain- that Eb clarinet wasn't made in China! If it was, it would have cracked 3 minutes into the video. ;)

Saxophone is more easy than clarinet. 2 raisons: the intonation is not so difficult and when you use the upper register its an octave higher instead of the clarinet whose diference is a quint. So, on the sax wyth the same finger positon you get the same note (with an octave of diférence) its change many things

Haha so this what an English Born Chinese sounds like? I'm a 22 year old Australian Born Chinese and I speak Canto with a pretty bad Aussie accent... I have to try really hard to not sound too Western :p but I have to say his Canto vocab is much wider than mine

In addition to good practicing habits, if you have good equipment (good reeds and a good clarinet, etc.) and good technique, then you will progress faster. If you already can read music, that's a good start. I guess I can't tell you how long it will take because it depends. I guess it takes a few years to get good, but even then, you spend the rest of your life practicing and perfecting. Good luck! :)

MrHappyRandomness not quite. this would closer match the sopranino sax. the clarinet match for the Alto sax would be the Alto clarinet
