I was a cop in Montana in the late 70's. The Fury's had a 318 engine, the double bubbles. Our uniforms were blue modeled after LAPD. I carried a Model 19 Smith and Wesson .357 magnum with a 6" barrel in a high rise holster.

Glen Vant You cannot forget the model 28's, and the more common 27, Very rigid and reliable. IMO

To answer your question, The Smith & Wesson Model 10 was one of the most commonly issued side arms in 20th century policing. Great video as always.

One common sidearm for Law Enforcement in the 70's was the Smith and Wesson Model 19, 4 inch barrel in .357 Magnum. That one is my favorite out of all the different ones issued.
@glenvant
@glenvant 7 лет назад
Additional info. We had a full light bar, not the two bubblegum machines and spotlights on both sides. Radio equipment was mounted on a rack in the center of the dash. Also mounted on the rack was a 12 gauge pump shotgun standing upright.

Standard issue sidearm for LAPD was a revolver in the 70s. Also, partitions were never used in 70s police cars. An officer would ride in back with the suspect.

Standard handgun depends on department, county, and state but usually a revolver was the most common.

smith & Wesson Model 10 was a very popular police revolver. Semi auto slide loaded pistols didn't reach prevelance into the 90s is memory serves. Of course there were some pioneers that phased out revolvers pretty early after seeing the effectiveness of weapons like the M1911

it depended on the department, but most issued a .38 six shooter. some departments issued M1911s however.
@deathrelo8634
@deathrelo8634 7 лет назад
Almost all departments ISSUED the .38 Special. Usually, it was the S&W .38 Special. However, some departments allowed individual officers to carry their own weapons. One of the reasons for this was that the .38 Special had such a poor reputation as a man stopper, which actually dated farther back in history. So, the most common replacements were the .45 Colt Automatic, .44 Special, .45 Long Colt, and so on, almost always larger in diameter than the .38 Special. However, two new cartridges were also around and about. The .357 Magnum and the .44 Magnum were coming onto the scene at this time.

Cops used to carry Colts and Smith and Wesson, the models varied from Colt Troopers and Lawman, to S&W Model 10 and 19 then to model 14 K-38 which had a stainless steel frame. Any K frame is stainless steel the caliber could be anywhere from .38, .44 and .357 and barrel length was either 4 or 6 inches (some of the .357 magnums had longer barrels, .S&W .38 special or the Colt .38 Detective special were snub nose, barrel length about 2 inches) then in the late 70's to early 80's Ruger made its way on to the approved carry list. They also carried a 26 inch hardwood baton it looks like a bat and was standard issue and made by numerous companies. In the Mid 80's the standard issue became the PR-24 Monadnock 24″ Baton which was also hardwood but it had the extra grip on the side of it and was carried up until the late 90's into the early 2000's where they switched to the collapsible metal one you see now.

in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, smaller town police stations(sandy shores and grapeseed, and paleto bay sized) always bought there police cruisers used from other agencies (FBI, homeland, and large town police forces) because the bigger towns got new cars every year while the smaller towns cant afford it. Larger towns always put a maximum of about 100,000 miles on a car and then sold it, while smaller towns go until they buy a new one or it dies. In honor of that you should use the 70's and 80's cars in the smaller area patrols

@joshcampbell6098 5 лет назад
Either the Colt Python, Colt Trooper, Colt Cobra, .357 Smith and Wesson or .44 Magnum Smith and Wesson the Colts would be .357 Magnum or .38 special and you can switch the .44 Magnum for .44 special and some police departments carried the 1911 in .45 ACP and a Winchester, Remington or Mossberg 12 gauge pump action shotgun
@joshcampbell6098
@joshcampbell6098 5 лет назад
SWAT would have the 1911, a Winchester, Remington or Mossberg pump action shotgun, a submachinegun and a Winchester or Remington bolt action rifle 30-06 or bigger and would possibly have an M14 or M16 for any rifleman that was not a sniper
