after watching videos on youtube, i was able to disassemble the door, take out the windows and replace the entire regulator in 45 minutes per side. i found out that there is a cheap bushing that the window motor shaft rests in that can cause your sticking problem too. when that bound up, the motor was so powerful that it bent the regulator mechanism, broke the mounting bracket in the door. it actually dimpled the door itself! if your door window is sticking, i highly recommend you not only replace those nylon gliders but also the regulator bushing. if it wears it causes the gears to become out of alignment. it's only a $2.00 part but caused me to replace the regulators at $200.00 each
Times like this i kinda miss the roll up windows. Still love the z3. Want to here something funny?. While driving the 99 in slow construction traffic. A Miata and a evo got side by side we were having fun just being stuck behind big rigs. When my rearview mirror just. Fell off. Top down windows down middle lane. Could not escape the. Emotional damage.
You rock man, and I appreciate the shoutout, thanks! 👍Also, great video and wish I tried this method instead of ripping part the door on my Z3, way to save those motors!
@@MomentofZedThanks for sharing. The trim around the door handle sliding to release is something many people might not realize. However, I would not use metal pry tools on the door like the guy in the video did. Plastic non-marking pry tools are cheap at Harbor Freight and work very well. I replaced a window regulator in my old E39 540i M Sport Six Speed. The door card was marginally fussy, but relatively easy to work out the nuances of removal.
I bought my z3 last august & I love fixing it myself & I just found your channel. I love the humor & being shown how to fix the common problems myself from your videos. Pls don't stop the z3 content!!!
@@boabie1463 if and when I get one it kind of what to paint it black like my top as most most of them match the cars paint but almost 20 years with mine I have a hard time not see black on that area.
@@MomentofZed I store it in a outdoor shed that doesn't take much room. It is on now the car now though. It is my second favorite setup, topless still being the favorite. Beats the rag top hands down.
@@MomentofZed we hang out Jeeps hardtop from the ceiling in our garage. I have d-rings in the ceiling joist with 5" 1/4" lag bolts. Little over kill but I'd do the same with the Z's top. But match my cars black top not the gunmetal gray it is.
Any more info on the style 68s? Locally there are some 17" offsets available originally from an M3. Can these be put on the 1998 standard body 1.9L Z3s without modification?
Here's what Alejandro said: Those wheels came on the 330i or the m3 of the era. I received one answer about your second question: I have seen it done before, it may be a bit of a stretch on the rear but front should work fine! Good luck -let us know if you try!
@@MomentofZed I checked into it and the staggered setup with these wheels will work on the Z3. I think it is something like 7.5" 46 offset in front and 8.5" 50 offset rear. Some put up to a 20mm spacer in the rear. It does alter the handling, some like it, some don't. Those with larger engines tend to like it more. Most everyone thinks it looks way cool. I like the way mine handles now, don't want to risk the investment for something I may not like.
Good info but i own a 1998 z3 1.9 i have an engine light when i scan it "large leak" i did change the gas cap the light came back again can you tell me a lil about this matter?
Nice experimental video. Great innovative thinking. Going to try it on my original owner 58,389-mile 2001 Z3 2.5 . Passenger window is a bit slow. Thank you for sharing. Your videos are a great source of Z knowledge.
Moment of zed. My car is on life support. Just replaced driveshaft bushings .mechanic just said drive shaft and transmission output is worn to almost smooth. Kinda hard to keep up with her. Was almost ready to send a picture for the community. But i think its going to be a farewell and eulogy . to the best driving car in the world. Sad news from Bakerfield Ca.
I get it. But some things to think about- no one makes or will make anything like it again. The feeling you get when you drive it will be gone. Do people stop and ask you what you're driving? Do they say "Hey cool car!" ? Not anymore. I'm not making you feel better am I? Hope you change your mind and stay in the community. This isn't a sales site, but if you'd like me to feature the car on Zed of the Week, I'll mention you are letting it go. Would be nice for it to go to someone else in the community!
@@MomentofZedshe is out of the shop and drives once more . yay. sad but true . its my dteam. Car and a real dream to drive. Plus in my friends private dirt patch a 🍩 dust tornado .but i will need new/used driveshaft. And what ever that part is that connects to the tranny .transmition is fine just the transmission yolk i think the mechanics said. Word of warning. Check the status of your driveshaft bushings before doing powerslides or donuts.
Well done! Many thanks! You certainly gave it a good go. Makes me wonder if it would be advisable to attempt the door card removal process. Wonder if broken plastic retainers can be replaced.
Thanks Walter! They can be replaced. For sale in all the usual places, Pelican, Ebay, etc. I was more worried about breaking other things on the door. Think I'm a little (too) gun shy after doing the glovebox sag fix.
@@MomentofZed I too am gun shy. Installing the roll hoops in the car was quite a chore, having to replace all of the plastic console behind the seats, during which I removed the plastic door sill trim, during which one of them broke, along with breaking retaining clips. Took some work to find replacement materials. I hate working with the plastic components. It is a shame BMW used so much plastic, but it keeps the Z lighter in weight.
