I love how this movie subverts the "Liar Revealed" trope. Rather than being angry at Luca and Alberto for lying to her about their identities , Giulia is more concerned about their safety amidst the townspeople.

I Especially love that moment. I like how she points out that it seems that they're just risk in their lives for a Vespa. But the climax of the movie all three children risk their own lives not for the race or Vespa but for their friends. That is pretty awesome and heartwarming in my book

Something else I want to add is what Guilia said to Luca in that scene at her place after she's seen Luca's fish claws: "you think I want you to leave? This is the happiest I've- look, it's just not worth it." It's clear that once the initial shock of seeing sea monsters are real wore off she is not scared at all seeing how if they really were dangerous sea monsters Luca and Alberto would have actually harmed her a long time ago. She just wanted to make sure her her first real friends outside of Genova don't get hurt Heck, before Alberto revealed himself Luca said "we were wondering if *we* can come to your school?" This meant that at that point in time Luca was thinking of actually leaving with Alberto and Guilia to her school because he still believes his parents will want to send him to the deep. Lucas still considered Alberto his friend at that point even though he was angry with him for in his words "you don't know how to do it right" and "you're just afraid you can't do it [going to a human school]"

I think to subvert that trope is often makes for a better 3rd act, or wherever they normally put it, than the regular variant of the trope

This was definitely one of Pixar's stronger small-scale films for sure, I cannot agree more. But with regards to Jacob Tremblay, there's one other reason he felt so perfect in this movie. It's not just for the variety of personalities which, don't get me wrong, work really well. But it's also because he's had experience with playing children who were outcasts in some form. Like Jack in 'Room' or Auggie Pullman in 'Wonder'. He carried that same feeling of being childlike, innocent, but also slightly alienated here in Luca the same way he brought it forth in the other films I mentioned.

I loved this movie, I honestly didn't understand why some people were complaining about it having low stakes and a small story, do these people only watch action movies? Honestly, probably yes. High stakes can be interesting but it's been done so much (especially with all the superhero movies lately but it's happens in animation a lot too, especially western animation though I do have to admit it's only slightly less common in anime as well.) I liked how this movie had a nice relaxing feel and if you made it 2D I would actually probably think it was made by Ghibli. Also, yes, I know the Earwig and the Witch was CG but that movie was kinda mediocre for a Ghibli movie even apart from the CG.

Right! We watched Raya just a few days before watching this one, and tried to figure out why we liked Luca and not Raya. Quickly we realized that right now, during these disasterous times, we don't crave an epic world destruction movie where the whole of humanity is all but wiped out by a mysterious plague, but rather a simple movie that speaks to friendship and family and pasta. Both were beautifully made, but it's Luca that we've returned to again and again, not Raya.

That’s actually really common in fairy tales, the “if x condition is met then you are y” formula. I can’t remember if there’s specifically “if you get wet you’re a sea person,” in FAIRY tales, but It’s a concept repeated in different flavors in a lot of stories involving shape-shifting creatures, or just transformation in general. I’ve always kind of loved it, even though it’s like, dramatically anxious (for me), because the transformation back thing is usually not convenient, or within one’s control. But this is a children’s movie, so they’re not gonna be all awful and gross when they find out Luca’s not human, I’m sure. You wouldn’t endorse it so sweetly otherwise, you’re not that kind of guy! I’m reassuring myself, ignore me, back to the recommendation!

Actually, the idea of a merfolk or sea monster being able to disguise as a human but are revealed when they get wet is a very old folklore. A folklore that has appeared in a few animes and even some western properties such as The Wild Thornberrys. It's not SUPER common or well known so I full get why people think of it as a new concept. Especially since The Wild Thornberrys episode left things a lot more ambiguous

I personally prefer to think they are not homosexual because you don't see many stories about a loving relationship between to male friends. Like Frodo and Sam are to friends who grow to love each other but they were never intended to be gay. You can imagine whatever you want but I think we are to fast to positively or negatively label loving Male friendship as gay.
@MidnightSonnet
@MidnightSonnet 2 года назад
You don't see many LGBTQ relationships in media because for decades, it wasn't acceptable. If any gay characters were included, they were usually comic relief and nothing more. That's thankfully starting to change. Representation is important. Also, as Doug pointed out, Luca and Alberto can be anywhere on the spectrum. Doesn't have to be full on gay. Most people in reality are somewhere on the spectrum, not completely one way or the other. The director said he intended the movie to be about kids in the "pre-romantic" stage of life, where romance isn't in the equation yet. But that he's thrilled at how his movie has been received by the LGBTQIA community. And I think Doug makes a good point that the movie is done so well that everyone can interpret it however they wish. It's a safe place for, literally, everyone. While it's fine to not see them as representations for the queer community, and I totally agree that affectionate male friendships need to be normalized, understand that it's okay for people to see it the other way. As stated, a safe space is very important, especially for minorities. :)
@Robert3377
@Robert3377 2 года назад
While I didn’t see the LGBT allegory, I can see why a lot of people saw that; Luca is a story about outsiders looking to fit in and the pressure on how everyone else will see them. I saw it as an acceptance story that can cover a lot of things; age, race, gender, sexuality, size, you fill in the blank. People are afraid of what their peers will think of their real selves. People do get caught into trying to fit into a society that’s honestly already more diverse then we expect. There’s even the underlying hard truth that things never stay the same… and that’s a good thing Luca is Pixar’s version of Kiki’s Delivery Service

I fully expected this to be a kiddie fluff kinda movie. Once again, I underestimate Pixar only to fall in love with their movies, and this was no exception. I feel like the predictable "be yourself" aspect wasn't actually the main theme. Heck, they barely focus on it, they're accepted at the end very quickly. I think the real theme was "what happens when your friend's life path diverges from yours"? However briefly, Pixar once again explores a rather obscure and complex idea with grace. Alberto's semi-sacrifice at the end was a tear jerker for me. :)

I will say the creator DID say it comes from his own life, so it DOES have a bit of that "Figuring yourself/your sexuality out" thing BUT he said he sees these characters as "Just before" the age where sexuality is something they're aware of and he himself didn't really intend it to be a sexual discovery thing or an allegory but he also has no trouble with other people seeing it there because he based it on his OWN childhood.

I think I honestly loved Giula's dad way more than I expected to in this movie. At first, he has this major big, tough, rough guy exterior, but when the boys get to know him by working for him, he shows he's actually a big softie, and not in a dumb cliche way, it's believable, like when you know a big guy who looks scary but is actually a teddy bear. That's just how he is most of the time and it's what everybody knows him as. And in the biggest moment for the two boys when their secret is out he is immediately the first one to stand up for them and say there's nothing wrong/weird about them, they're just HIS BOYS. It's like he's not just Guila's dad, he's the dad/uncle figure for ANYBODY in the town that needs it. And he doesn't even need you to ask, he just immediately accepts it. That might seem small but you seriously have no idea how amazing a character that made this guy for me.

With the current line of films trying to up each other by having the bigger action scenes, big adventures, or the biggest explosions it does get a bit repetitive. It’s fun but movies seem to be nothing but action as of late. I like that this movies relaxes and it’s a nice change of pace for an audience. Kind of like you can listen to pop, rap, rock all the big music brands, but sometimes it’s nice to chill out and listen to lofi mixes, orchestras from video games and movies, or anything else that takes a moment to let you smell the roses.

The LGBT argument kinda irks me, especially after the director confirmed the boys aren't gay. Not because of any issue with LGBT rights. Hell, I'm bi. It's mainly because this is another case where people see two guys expressing their affection for each other and immediately assume they're gay. That kind of thinking is a bit dangerous, because it can cause guys, especially young boys and teens, to NOT show affection to their friends out of fear of being labelled gay. Now yeah, guys seeing gay as bad is also a problem, but for all the calls for men and boys to be more open with their feelings, a whole lot of people seem to not let them do it without assuming things.

He actually never said they weren't gay. I read all his interviews and the only thing he makes clear is that his intent for the movie was the be about friendship, in the "pre-romantic" years of childhood. He never once stated the sexuality of the boys. As for your argument, I both agree and disagree. I agree only in the sense that it might make youngsters more skittish about showing affection towards their friends for fear of being labeled. But at the same time, that's been a problem for decades, so the response to Luca won't make it worse. If anything, it'll make it better in a way, since most kids won't be privy to what the internet is saying. So they'll just watch the movie and see a wonderful, affectionate friendship and conclude that it's normal. So they're actually receiving a positive message that's influential to future friendships. In my opinion, it's not the LGBTQIA response to movies that may or may not have a queer subtext that's the issue. It's societal views on minorities in general. In a utopian society, a person can see two characters in a movie as gay, while another person sees them as platonic, and they'd both agree to disagree. No hateful remarks about who's wrong or right or how it might negatively impact others. Both parties would simply understand that their opinions hurt no one, as long as they're respectful. It's for this reason that I hate ship wars. Imo, as someone who's panromantic, I like the idea of a budding relationship between Luca and Alberto. But I also don't care if it never happens. The movie is great no matter the subtext. While I know that representation is important, I know that it'll be awhile before most children's media companies are on board with including more in the mainstream. Newer generations are way more inclusive, after all.

The thing with Pixar films is, I know I'm in for a reasonably good time no matter what. I was actually surprised they made a film that's a lot smaller in scale than they usually do. However, I now kind of want them to do that more often. I like the big, grand films, but not every film needs to be like that, and having a story that's a lot more limited in scope can actually make for a worthwhile film too in its own way.

One of the biggest highlights for me is the animation itself. Particularly how they transform from sea monster to human, it's a creative concept and so visually appealing to watch. Okay, so remember how the Critic said he didn't get into Emperor's New Groove because he expected more stakes and grandeur from Disney? I love New Groove for how clever and funny it is, but that mindset kinda summarizes my thoughts on Luca. It doesn't bore me like Brave, Good Dinosaur and Inside Out, but it really lacks the stakes and emotional drama of Coco, Incredibles or Toy Story. It just shows up, does its own thing, and then leaves. I totally respect it for that and I get why so many people love it, but I'd call it an okay kids film. That being said, Pixar's okay is still leaps and bounds ahead of most other studios' best, so we're good on that front.

Like the scope, the characterisation is restrained enough to work. Alberto has abandonment issues but the film doesn’t spell it out like it’s spoon feeding you, and it informs his friendship with Luca as well as giving him a new father figure. That father figure only has one arm, but there’s no dramatic backstory or meaning, he simply grew up without an arm and it has no more significance than that. Alberto’s father has no other role in the film, he’s not a casualty from an earlier scene or an active antagonist, he’s felt entirely through his absence in Alberto’s life and the film’s narrative. Ercole is a bully and the closest thing to an antagonist, but he doesn’t have a tragic past or sob story, he’s just a nasty piece of work who everyone is tired of. It does the job without overegging it. It would have been so easy to make these things seem deeper or more meaningful, but there’s just enough for what the film needs.
