"DISNEYCEMBER 2020 Blog Day 31" draws to a closed with Pixar's "Soul" yet another 2020 film that was supposed to release to theaters but when theaters got shut down the film got release on Christmas day thur "Disney +" & much like other Pixar films this film got better for the most part a story about a soul returning to his body but runs into trouble has been done in "Coco" & "Inside out" so inclosing if you hasn't seen it go to "Disney +" & give it a watch. & that ends another "DISNEYCEMBER" now listen people 2020 wasn't a best year but we have "Disney" films to help us along the way with good films/bad films & weird films but let's face it we need a break from everything & pray 2021 might get better "fingers crossed" So My friends until next "DISNEYCEMBER" I bid you Adieu & have a safe & happy 2021 "happy new year"

I actually wouldn't mind if it was set entirely within that realm.

When you have New York as your setting for a movie about living life as you want, iiiiiits kind of a waste xD Almost like this movie was a foil to Tomorrowland, where I was dissappointed the movie went SO LITTLE in it when it was the major theme compared to Soul where, ironicaly, didn't spend much into the lands of souls but into the real world where the story fit so well.

I'm so glad they didn't go that route. I was so afraid that this was gonna be like The Princess & The Frog or Brother Bear or a lot of Disney movies starring people of color where they have the black character be turned into a frog or something for the entire movie. I was so afraid that they were gonna have Joe be in soul form for the whole movie.

SO glad it wasn’t in the great before completely! Like it was cool but boring enough that I didn’t want the entire movie to be there

Especially when you compare Soul to Onward which was just a road trip movie set in a fantasy world.

@@catdogmousecheese I feel like soul is way more ambitious, but onward is more of a personal story. I feel the heart in both stories, but pete docter is a more mature and overall better filmmaker than Dan Scanlon. I liked onward quite a bit though.

Tru onward lacked worldbuilding to be honest

I was wondering why they did that- Disney doesn’t usually stylize the end title like that. And I was too emotional at the end of the movie to think about it too much, so thank you for sharing that thought: I think that’s exactly what they were going for.

As soon as I saw the "Walt Disney Pictures presents", I had my camera open ready to take a pic to share that I was watching the movie. I was expecting an opening title just like Onward's which appears after Ian puts on his sweatshirt and walks out of his bedroom. But, yeah, it didn't come until the very end. Honestly, GREAT theory! You're absolutely right!

Honestly, I'm kind of tired of this trope of not showing the title until the movie is over.

If they could come up with a killer story for it, I wouldn't mind a sequel called "22". Maybe like, a series of short stories she's telling a soul she's mentoring about her life? I dunno, it might work.

They could do a show about moonwind and his team sailing the zone and help lost souls, i would watch it And since disney is striving to expand every universe they own to keep Disney plus alive, i don't see why not

They will do what promises profit.

Give them 10 to 20 years and they will make it a live action crap.

Honestly, at this point, just give me an Alice Braga Jerry ASMR short. Her voice and character were SO SOOTHING!!!! As for Joe and 22, yeah, I don't want to see them again. I don't want to know what happens to them. I know they're out there enjoying life and that is ALL that matters.

I was fully expecting him to fail somehow in the band and that would be what spurred him to return to the soul realm, but what they went with was SOOO much more mature and realistic.

Agreed. Not to mention that if he die, it might send the wrong message to the wrong people. A lot of suicidal people think that people around them would be happier if they died and this movie might have enforced that message if Joe died. So yeah, Joe living sends the message that you need to live for yourself as well, and not just for others.

Exactly! If Joe choose to go to the Great Beyond at the end, the movie would be against it's own message and it wouldn't work like the way it is.

Personally, I saw the ending as Joe finally realising he doesn't really love being this great musician that he always thought he wanted to become. His calling in life is to become a mentor. To inspire others. And at the end of the movie, he finally gets his second chance to really put it in practice back on earth. You could call it "learning to appreciate what he has", but I think it is deeper than that. He realises that what he has is the only thing that can truly make him happy. And now, he gets to be truly happy about that.

@@Marco_Onyxheart I agree with you for the most part but I think that he still loves jazz but instead of making that his only purpose and getting lost in looking for the next thing that will make him happy around jazz.(I think that's what a lost soul is ) .He learned that he can use his passion to help people and enjoining life in the process.

I’m still completely split. I mean like, I kind of do think that it would have been even technically suicide if he did go through with his death. But on the other hand I do love it when a character does make a sacrifice and the consequences actually do go through.

I think you should watch it again. One of the main points was that there IS no one spark. Life is about living it, and enjoying it. There are things you are good at, but they should not consume you to the point of ignoring everything else. That is what Joe was doing. He was so obsessed with getting "the gig" that he was forgetting everything else in life.

But i probably would've felt a way if he died without truly living. But I wonder what the message would've conveyed if they had the darker ending in real life you only get 1 ( except of you believe in reincarnation) so him accepting death and realizing he lived life would've gave the message of living life to the fullest more.

I thought so too, but this is ever better... that there is no real purpose... because I've tried to find mine for years, thought I found it and lost it again, and now looking for it again... But I guess it's about the people and the moments. If 22 (or Joe) would have turned out to become a mentor (and yeah, I also thought that's where it was going), it wouldn't have hit me that hard, because it'd still suggest that everyone has a purpose... and to have that just not be the case, it's so much deeper.

I thought for a moment that Moonwind was voiced by the same guy who did Cavendish on Milo Murphy's Law, they really did sound alike but no, it's Graham Norton as Moonwind while Jeff Marsh is Cavendish on Milo Murphy.

Yea, I get that as well. Just felt like Joe dropping dead while playing the piano (poetic in itself) after getting the gig and making such a breakthrough with his mother seemed still a bit tragic; although satisfying as we the viewers saw Joe recollect heart warming moments in his life that showed him he still had a good run at life.

100% agree with you! At first I was of the mindset that he should have gone to the great beyond at the end, but after further contemplation I came upon the same thought you stated. It doesn't matter what happens in the future, what matters is Joe is gonna do his hardest to live his best life and enjoy every moment of it and so will 22.

Thank you- that’s exactly how I felt. Some of the pacing in the movie for me was a little wonky outside of that, but I agree the theme works best with a vague ending.

I'm glad I found someone who agrees about the ending being perfect the way it is. Many people dont follow or pay attention to the true message of the movie.

That’s precisely why, he was able to get through to 22 when no one else had. More than that, he guided her towards her epiphany rather than directing her to it like a great mentor should as he tried to do at the start. His actions showed his development and 22’s.

Yes, I concur! Joe accepting his death made the spirit Gods realize that he had a renewed appreciation for his life, so they opted to grant him another shot at life. ♥️

But what about all the other people on the conveyorbelt, they accepted their fate and didn't get a second chance? I understand why it got that ending, but I'm leaning a bit more towards NC's version. Because that way, it feels more like you actually get a meaningful message, and not just tempted with one. PS, HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2020 CAN SUCK IT!

Yeah, I personally like how it was a step back from cynicism that I see about just accepting death all the time rather than cherishing every chance you get to live. After growing up in a deeply religious household where death and the afterlife was on everybody's tongue, it's nice seeing a move shamelessly celebrate the little things in life and how ultimately people deserve kindness and second chances. It might've fit more if the theme was around the acceptance of death, like in UP where from the intro it carried that message, but here I think it works best that he got that second chance. Of course I would've loved to see him become a mentor but either way I feel satisfied.

But its best movie Last Jedi was the one most people hated, and while I agree the prequels did suck I’d gladly rewatch Revenge Of The Sith over any of the Star Wars films Disney made with the franchise.

@@ToxicTurquoise454 Prequels at least were smart from a marketing perspective, provided totally new locations and aesthetics for each faction's military forces (they made a solid game solely based on the race section of episode 1), kids wanted those toys. The sequels, aside from Kylo's lightsaber and helmet, offered nothing of that. The story was intended to follow the same formula of the original and so was the asthetic, being mere reskins of everything in the OG.

How was Joe gonna die? he survived the coma and was in the great before not because of death, but because he went into a music trance on purpose, knowing that he could reach it that way, without having to die. He literally was alive and well right before his second visit to the great before.

Indeed, I watched this movie with my little cousins the day after Christmas, and we all absolutely adored it! 😍

This is what I really wanted to see and what I think was missing. There’s a brief moment during the barbershop 💈 shop scene that made think that Joe was taking his life and those around him for granted. Right at the beginning when he’s teaching band and he walks out and complains about the kids his teaching. I would have loved to see him go back to the classroom and inspire his students, hug his mum and thank her for all her sacrifice over the years.

i also wanted an ending but I liked it because it shows how it didn't matter, and there was no correct way to live life. So it was a mystery to us, because, life IS a mystery. So I liked that.

To be fair, I don't think kids will understand the message either way. Don't get me wrong, I'm against treating kids as dumb, they aren't. But this movie is clearly speaking to the adult in us, instead to the child. The message will probably get over their heads.

And as Don bluth said... You can show a kid everything as long it has a happy ending. Him, accepting his life and finding happiness in the little moments, it is not a bad ending. Him going to the great beyond is honestly, also a happy ending: Finding peace.

@@maybeeton I think some kids will get it, the kids that need it. As in the kind of kids that are smart and introspective about death will get the message and those are the kids that probably could do with this movie. Most kids its probably going to over their heads and they're gonna watch when they're older and have it finally make sense. Kids might understand the message with a little help from their parents though.

Exactly. I went through the whole ending sequence thinking Joe's time was up. I was not surprised when I saw him heading toward the Great Beyond with a smile on his face. However, I was PLEASANTLY surprised when Jerry showed up and offered Joe a second chance. And I absolutely ADORED the final shot and final line of the film. I NEEDED to hear that line. It's my new mantra. It reminds me to enjoy every second that I'm alive. And it's so inspiring knowing this is how Joe is living his life from here on out. We get the chance to now live life without searching for any reward (because life itself IS the reward) but if Joe just straight-up died, he would've been robbed of that chance. And, yeah, LIFE ITSELF IS THE REWARD. It is LITERALLY Joe's reward for succeeding with 22.

When I was a kid we called it the "quiet snail." Same gesture, but the ears become eye stalks.

It's also an asshole move to making a movie about learning to enjoy life, then killing off the main character. That's not inspirational, that's a scare tactic.

The issue is that, while it may make for a more satisfying end to the movie, it's undermining part of the message of the movie in the process. Part of the beauty of this movie is how maturely it tackles some of the more serious elements, with death being a BIG one of those. Death can be abrupt, and isn't always going to wait for you to tie up all lose ends. You likely won't even be able to say goodbye to all you love in the end. But that's life, and accepting that will help put a bigger emphasis on ensuring every moment spent with those you care about is enjoyable. Will your death bring tragedy and grief for those you've touched in life? Sure, but that doesn't erase the moments you had with them, nor the impact you had on their life. (which, side-note on that point, Jazz is kinda born out of pain and sorrow, that girl could also very easily wind up using it as an outlet, while I see giving it up entirely would have been the more unlikely result)

@@firekirby123 I think this is an interpretation thing because to me, while death was a part of what the movie was talking about, it was not the main focus/message. The main focus is what was mentioned above, learning to enjoy life in the moment for what it is rather than striving for some grand purpose, and it makes more sense from a narrative perspective to have the ending align with the main message of the story. They could've still made it work like "you should enjoy life while you can before you're at the end of it", but also like what was mentioned above, that feels more like a threat than the inspirational message I'm assuming Pixar is going for. So all of this considered, I think ending the movie with the main character now having a chance to live his life aware of the good in it fits perfectly with the overall message of the movie, even if it elevates the seriousness of death as part of it. I guess you could consider it a tradeoff.

@@lucky8X8 I wouldn't go so far as to say death is the main theme, just an important throughline that the movie uses to illustrate the main theme. It's still an important topic though. Still, I think that's another interesting thing about this movie; because it doesn't explicitly spell out anything but the core moral, there's enough room for interpretation and intellectual discussion on the smaller topics the movie brings up. As far as Joe's death being a scare tactic though, I don't particularly agree. Especially if the movie had a different epilogue. For example, say about 15 years later after Joe dies, we see 22 in a music class being taught by a new music teacher: the girl from Joe's old class who followed in her teacher's footsteps and wants to share her love of music. Of course, despite everything, 22 wouldn't be all that interested, until the teacher starts bringing up Joe, and starts playing a cover of his music on the trumpet. I don't think 22 should necessarily remember her time as a spirit, but I can easily see her being moved and feeling some sense of nostalgia, and as the class leaves, she pauses to ask a passing question about Joe, the teacher comments that he made an impact on her life, and the movie ends. THIS would have been a stronger end to me. Not because Joe dies, but because we can see that regardless of Joe's untimely death, his life was still meaningful to those around him, and his memory and passion still lives on despite his passing. This would also make a great way tk end the movie because, rather than being a parallel to a scene part way through the movie, this scene would be a direct parallel to the opening scene of the movie, continuing on the cycle of life and death theme without losing focus of the core theme of the movie. I'm not unhappy with the ending we got, but I do think there were better ways to cap off the story.

I think it resonates with different people for different reasons. Some older viewers might think him dying would be the better ending because they themselves are a bit closer to death and perhaps dwelled on the inevitivility of it more already to be content with it, while younger (like people in their late teens-Early 30's) might prefer him going back with this new perspective on life as a comfort for those who have anxiety about their future. Again it might be the other way around too with some older viewers maybe feeling more like they maybe "wasted" their lives but remember the good things and change their mind and so on. For me personally I've had a lot of anxiety about my future and also felt like I perhaps wasted some of my younger years because of those anxiety's but then I think about where I am now and the good things I do have that maybe I didn't initially seek out or have as an "endgoal" but am content with now.

Right? I was so confused as to why some didn't appreciate how the climax was handled when it brought into light how 22 truly felt this whole time. At first, i had mixed feelings with her view in life but when you get to see her inner demons it just makes you understand why she never got her spark. No one told her why living is great, just how she should live.

A lot of people get to not only relate to her, but get to learn atleast something and hopefully get better, because the trouble of finding purpose on life has led so many like the monsters in The Zone to be lost and confused.

Interesting you gave you thoughts! Because in one anime, Cowboy Bebop, I feel similar with one character where it felt that regardless of the character's fate, it felt like the character's arc and journey was done, and the fate didn't change that. Said character's fate is ambiguous however. While admittedly I feel the character dying is preferable to me since the arc was done and would feel like a perfect end, even if the character does live, that doesn't change the fact that the character finished all that needed to be done.

That's exsactly what I thought. Coco was so much better as a whole than Souls. Souls had its moments but really failed in the most important aspects, that scene that was clearly supposed to make you cry just didn't for me. After seeing Joe unpromptly be rude to 22 throughout there journey really ruined the passing and feeling of his character. It's still a solid movie but I think Coco was a much less flawed movie that was a true return to form. To each there own tho

Apparently, the perfect movie involves everyone he loves finding him suddenly dead at home after waking up from a coma. Because, if you truly believe Joe should die, then you're alright with the inevitable conclusion that his mother finds his dead body at the piano. :/

@@VoidStar. I'm not saying that wouldn't be heartbreaking, and I'm not saying that fact should be Ignored. I just believe that throughout the movie, it felt like Joe was making his peace. It felt like loose ends were being tied up, leaving everything in his worldly life on a good note. And, I think, if Joe had really gone to the great beyond, it would've been a seriously powerful message. One that would've stuck around for years to come

I think you hit the nail on the head. If he'd been all about going back to fix his life and he realized it was good all along the accepting death ending would have worked. But since he was all about how great it was until he saw it in the hall it made more sense to go back.

With that constant message of the movie saying to "focus on the little things in life," for the movie to suddenly say "accept death" would've been a little abrupt imo Plus you sort of expect that, so its nice the movie experts that leaves on a open note for us to guess what happens to Joe

@@beffygetsgood6315 I actually found it very refreshing that it wasn't that he was unsatisfied with his life as the reason for wanting to go back and "try again." He wanted to go back even when he thought he was satisfied with how things went/were going.

Good point there but in general I don’t think he did die. He was into playing the piano so it pretty much transfer him back to the soul land or whatever. Honestly looking back at it, that would be a horrible way to die... playing the piano and then your heart just stop and now your back on the elevator to the great beyond.

but when you think about it, his body was still "livable", he was in the hospital with his heart still beating but in a coma, so just like people's souls detach when they are "in the zone", I guess the same can happen in near-death experiences, but I think Jerries never figured it outso they can let souls of comatoses return to their bnodies once its in living condition.

@@cooperhernandez6404 That's a bit conflicting seeing how the MC just got a chance to do what he's always wanted to do. I wanted the MC to accept death in the beginning but after we found out he wasn't actually dead well...
