Luca - Movie Review 

This movie was like a sweet summer breeze. Not everything Pixar does have to be super heavy.

Have to strongly disagree with Chris on this one. Not everything needs an explanation. Seems like a symptom of modern moviegoers needing everything spoonfed. What they showed of Luca's underwater life was more than enough and left so much room for the imagination. His character and surroundings were explained to the level of what the story they were telling needed. We don't need 15 extra minutes of runtime to explain evey single detail.

I disagree as well. I genuinely loved this movie. It has so much charm. It’s warm, cozy little towns and people are just comforting. I really love this movie and it’s now one of my favorites. Everything doesn’t have to be a technical masterpiece or a storytelling marvel

What does Luca do? He's a shepherd. He's bored with his life. It's established pretty early.

You keep referring to a Vespa race in the movie, and there isn't one. There is a triathlon, with bicycles, not scooters. So, you didn't even pay attention to the movie.

The character of Ercole really fascinated me. They could have easily just made him the cliche bully kid, but instead they gave him the added element of being a grown ass man lying about his age to compete in a tournament for children. I don’t know why they did it, but I thought it was kind of interesting lol. This weird dude clinging to his childhood.

I strongly disagree, I absolutely LOVED this movie especially the “friendship” part of it between Luca and Alberto. It actually made me FEEL something at the end. Which soul didn’t really do for me. I didn’t go into this movie expecting an absolutely amazing DEEP story. I just watched it and went with the flow and didn’t set my standards too high for it.

I agree with many of the comments here. This movie feels like a slice-of-life coming of age story in the vein of Studio Ghibli. The cat character is straight out of a Ghibli story. Kiki didn't need high stakes to make the movie memorable. I think this is the first Pixar movie I can think of where they're branching into another kind of story telling, one that doesn't follow the classic Hollywood high-stakes mold. Some might think it's weak because it's not the expected Pixar trying-to-punch-you-in-the-heart storytelling, but it's full of characters going on adventures I wanted to see and I never once felt pandered to. Also, can we talk about the uncle with see-through guts? What a memorable little character.

To each their own I guess. I understand your criticism about the lack of lore, but personally, I really liked the movie - especially because of its low stakes simple story line and charming setting, sort of like a Studio Gimbli "slice of life" film, which hardly ever explain the mechanics of the created world/magic (e.g., My Neighbor Totoro). Luca was refreshing actually.

I really liked this movie. A film doesn’t need to make you reevaluate your life choices or make you view the world in a different light in order to be good. Luca was charming and simple, solid 8/10 for me :)

Luca is a Shephard boy leading the flock of fish, the equivalent to sheep for them.

I respect your opinion but I really like this movie, it explores how people feel rather than tells you facts about sea monsters. It explores friendship and betrayal in the most low stake ways so they can still be friends and work together later in the movie and it shows differences in friendship may not always be understood but everyone else. The story is beautiful in its own right and stands out from the rest for me.

It's a sweet little film that does what it set out to do. Not everything needs to be a grand epic. I'm glad the world was told through visuals rather than voiceover.

Gotta disagree with this one chris. This was the closest Disney has come to something like Kiki's delivery service. The plot was perfect for what is was going for, e.i. the warm, carefree vibes of a childhood summer.

Sad fact:this film was originally considered to be composed by Ennio Morricone but sadly he passed away before he was asked to do so.

The ending of the movie reminded me a lot of Superbad. But I honestly really enjoyed it. Not every Pixar movie needs to be as deep and nuanced as Soul. It's ultimately a very simple story about friendship.
