@@jstasur Go somewhere else triggered annoymous asshole. This is not a political channel. Why can't you understand that...This about celebrating legends and reminiscing, not about politics. Obvious you're the Snowflake since you are being a cry baby because you cant say political shit...kick rocks.
Good for you. I know this is a late statement but thank you. We are bombarded by that stuff all the time 24/7. I wish people would get a different religion than politics. Getting about Lucille Ball. She was truly the greatest. My all time fav is when she meets Bill Holden. Her putty nose catches on fire, (not intended or scripted) in front a live audience. Bless her talented heart for finding a way to handle it without missing a beat. She was the best! Miss you Ms. Ball. :)
I love how Lucy was so honest about her sadness and feeling hurt. Historically, Lucy was not accustomed to bad reviews. Joan loved Lucille Ball. And Lucy loved Joan.
But that was her downfall. She was so unaccustomed to bad reviews that she let her guard down and didn’t prob give “Life with Lucy” the attention it deserved.
It wasn't really about bad reviews. It was the fact that they made her feel like she shouldn't have come back to TV at her age and that was hard for her!!!!
My gosh the chemistry here is so beautiful it made my day seeing how much fun they had with each other how much they loved each other the rapport was mesmerising. Lucy just makes you so happy.
This is one of my favorite interviews because Lucy looks the same after all those years, and I especially love Joan's eternal words to Lucy "No one Could Do it But You" simple but so awesome.
Imagine how great it would be to have Lucille Ball laugh at one's jokes. It was heartwarming to hear her say that she" needed that" after laughing at Joan's joke. Lucille met millions of people's need for a laugh over her long career. RIP Lucille and Joan.
Poor Lucy! Some have said that she didn't know when to quit but what people don't understand is that working was Lucy's life force. When she left primetime TV in 1974 after 23 consecutive years she did it to re-launch her movie career which she attempted to do with the movie version of the musical Mame, the movie was universally panned with critics saying she was too old for the part and that she couldn't sing or dance and she fell into a deep depression that lasted many years. She received very positive reviews for her portrayal of an elderly homeless woman in 1985 in the made for TV movie Stone Pillow so she decided the time was right to return to a primetime series which she did with Life With Lucy in the fall of 1986. Unfortunately the show was ripped to shreds by critics saying that the gags were grossly outdated and that Lucy was way too old to be back on TV, it was also a ratings failure. It was cancelled after only 8 episodes. Lucy was absolutely devastated and many people believe this lead to her demise and subsequent death less than 3 years later. 1986 would prove to be a very bad year for Lucy having to deal with the cancellation of her show and then Desi's death in December of that year. Even though they were divorced they remained close and she always considered him to be the greatest love of her life.
Interesting story about Gary Morton. Many of Lucy's biographers have agreed with this. He was a user. He married Lucy to be a well tended golf bum. I could say more, but it really doesn't matter any more. We will always have Lucy at her best.
He certainly wasn't Desi. Desi was a genius as a businessman as well as a talented performer, Gary Morton was neither he basically lived off of Desi success......................
that's not exactly accurate either.....primary reason being mortan acted as the executive producer of all ball's shows...he never acted as her manager or agent...as such he had no authority to do negotiate on ball's behalf industry wise...ball stated publicly during mny interviews that she cld never do another sitcom because if it flopped it wld taint her legacy...and at the time she made those statements i believe she meant them wholeheartedly....ball's return to tv was solely based on one reason...sever depression....vance and ball were never besties...their friendship was more professional than personal.....the lines blurred because although they were not besties...ball cared a great deal about vance and confided deeply in vance when her marriage to desi was crumbling around her...and what was shared with vance never ever became public so there was a mutual respect....but i digress...ball found out in mid 85 that desi was terminally ill...Ball invited desi to move into her guest house so she cld look after him(desi's current wife edith had died few wks prior)...desi declined ball's offer (i am not sure why)...learning of desi's terminal illness sent ball in2 a sever depression although she attempted to hide this frm mortan it became obvious....ball went to see her medical doc and he suggested she return to tv to keep her mind occupied....ball initially rejected this suggestion but her depression reached a point where she finally relented...once ball relented..she reached out to her good friend a.spelling...because of spellings relationship with ABC and ball's track record (0-3) the show was picked up for 13 episodes absent of a abc needing to see a pilot...ball earned $100k per epsd as the star and mortan $150k per epsd as exec prod.....ball desperately wtd gordon who at 80 had retired by then....ball knew if she called him he wld decline so she and gary went to pay his farm to see him in person....mortan agreed with one stipulation...he wld be paid for all 13 episodes regardless of how thing turned out....ball agreed....biggest gamble & mistake of ball's career cause the show was cancelled after X episodes...ball was devestated n sunk in2 an even deeper depression....ball never discussed her return with desi....had she...i think he is the only person on earth that wld have convinced her it's not worth the risk and it wld be safer for her to either join an already existing show or return behind the scenes by exec producing a sitcom...if either failed her legacy wld not be tarnished...this is not the gospel...but damn close...
IMAGINE those rude bastards making a LEGEND like Lucille Ball cry!! They ought to have been *ashamed* of themselves. Lucille Ball is one of the most brilliant, entertaining, and ingenious women to have ever lived. It sucks that even she was not exempt from ageist double-standards. She had the last laugh though; her critics took a swipe at her but who knows or cares about their names? EVERYONE knows and loves the wonderful Lucille Ball! :D
They weren't rude, they were truthful. Yes, Lucille Ball was a legend in the entertainment industry, no one can take that away from her. But anyone in show business who possesses any wisdom, knows when to bow out gracefully and preserve their dignity and legacy. Lucy was surrounded by yes-men who weren't honest about the true quality of the show. The writing was poor, the plots were mediocre, the supporting cast were amateurs and Lucy's slapstick approach to comedy had by then fallen out of style - at that time, people preferred the snappy, sharp, sophisticated humor of sitcoms like 'The Golden Girls' & 'Cheers'. Not only that, but there were reports from crew members of the show, that instead of the audience finding Lucy's pratfalls funny, they instead reacted with alarm and dismay while watching her do the comedic physical stunts at her advanced age. This is a case of a star's ego going to their head, of a star being afraid to give up the spotlight and relevance. Lucy took advantage of her popularity and fame and rested on the laurels of 'I Love Lucy' - she demanded complete creative control over the show, which included her choosing the executive producer and writers - instead of making Larry Gelbart (creator and ex. prod. of MASH) an executive producer like ABC recommended, she instead chose her inexperienced husband Gary Morton along with 'I Love Lucy' writers Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr. as co-ex. prods. and writers for 'Life With Lucy', she refused to have a focus group give their critique of the pilot and made ABC agree to commit to a full season of episodes, sight unseen - there was no voice of reason or truth. These were all fatal errors that could have been avoided and saved Lucy a lot of face and embarrassment publicly. She made a similar mistake with 'Mame' (1974). Were the newspaper and industry critics supposed to lie to her and tell her the show was great when it wasn't? Was ABC supposed to keep it on the air and lose ratings and advertisers which equals money just to protect her fragile ego from being wounded? ABC is a company not a charity. Furthermore, Lucy ended up dying in 1989 from aortic dissection. She had been unwell long before 'Life With Lucy' ever started. She had suffered heat exhaustion on the set of the tv movie 'Stone Pillow', as it was filmed during the summer months yet the story took place in winter, and Lucy's character in the program was wearing layers of heavy winter clothes as she was portraying a homeless bag lady struggling to survive the brutally frigid winter nights on the streets. Because of the multiple heavy layers she had to wear playing the character, as well as the long hours of shooting with the majority of scenes taking place outdoors, she suffered heat exhaustion and severe weight loss and dehydration. It was said that her health was never really the same after making that movie. Her body never recovered fully. So if 'Life With Lucy' hadn't been cancelled, Lucy would have probably died a lot sooner than 1989. Sitcoms have notoriously, strenuous long hours - usually 12-16 hour days for 5 days a week. That toll would have killed her a lot sooner and so "Life With Lucy' wouldn't have survived anyway once her health gave way.
You can really tell that Joan Rivers respects Lucille Ball. Rivers usually doesn't stop to let anyone have a word in if she wants to say something but you can tell here she was treading lightly, giving Ball all the time she needed. Amazing.
Oh my 2 legends here! the best of humanity! I thoroughly enjoyed this interview it made me forget all my troubles as miss rivers once said " making someone laugh is like giving them a little vacation"
When she died someone being interviewed while paying respect at Lucy's Star on the Walk of Fame said simply, there was only one Lucille Ball and there will never be another one. So True! She had a remarkable career if you think about it and she was very very smart! The Tina Fey's and Amy Pollers who are our "Lucy's" of today do something quite different that Lucy, and comedy has changed. Carol Burnett is another rare gem who is so versatile.
The very best. I watch I Love Lucy everyday. In the morning & evening before bed. She's my favorite. So talented. Hilarious. Same for Ms. Rivers..My 12 yr old daughter loves to watch Lucy now...
+TheJuan72 She didn't stab anyone in the back you fucking idiot. She left for her own show, which the Tonight Show was not offering. Only a moron wouldn't leave for their own show.
+TheJuan72 if Rivers had only contacted Carson before the announcement of her Fox show was made, he would have congratulated her. Carson always admired Rivers as a great comedian. But he did not “fear her.”
It really strikes me to see the audience stand up for Lucy when she makes her entrance. In her later interviews and talk show appearances (70s and 80s) everyone in the audience stood up when a host introduced her. That to me, is prove that they really loved her.
The day Lucy died my brother called me to Make sure I was ok. Since he knew how much I admire her. She’s so missed favorite comedian no one comes any better than her
I love your comment! My 11 year old daughter is a huge fan of the show, and she's read several books about her. I'm glad she admires someone as wonderful as Lucy, rather than some silly new star from today's shows. You're right -- they don't make shows like that anymore. And they don't make stars like Lucille Ball anymore either.
I was only 7 when she died. But there were always repeats of her various shows on. Her laugh is the 1 thing that will stick with me. It was infectious. Rip.
I have watched and loved all of the I Love Lucy shows as a child and as an adult now, it is so amazing and fascinating to see interviews of Lucille Ball and the other cast. It is amazing to see how much work went into the show which they made it seem so effortless. I love to see her in color. I think that she is the best 1950s star. Thank you so much, it's amazing to see her interviews and outside of the set.
Too Good thanks for posting! Always great to see new Lucy posts. Too bad Life with Lucy wasnt given more of a chance. It started to get better towards the last episode aired with Audrey Meadows.
@wiannoboy their last phone conversation was so incredible; "I love you. I love you. Desi, I love you." Lucy didn't fool anyone saying she was happy with Gary. I believe she was, but he wasn't Desi. No one was Desi and no one could replace him. She continued to depend upon him and she would cover up for him or help him if he ever got in trouble. Just reading her own book reveals her true feelings. ♥
This is great!!! I love Lucille Ball. I cried the day she died! I think the reason Life With Lucy didnt make it is because, i think, people are use to seeing her on I Love Lucy and being younger and they didnt want to see someone that age trying to do the same kind of stunts like when she was 40....I agree with someone else that the writing and the cast wasnt good. :( Lucy will always be #1
It's very cool to see genuine laughs from Lucy here. She often talked about her distaste for blue humor, but CLEARLY she enjoyed it when Joan got a little naughty with her language or joking.
Loved Joan so much... She had such character and seeing her with Lucy seems crazy in a world where talk shows are merely advertising platforms... We keep forgetting they were conceived to bring celebrities closer through humorous interviews.
Glad I chanced upon this. I knew Joan Rivers had her own show and glad my first view was this. Both Lucy and JR are strong and funny. They take no prisoners! Tell it like it is and no regrets.
How awesome Joan must've felt, to have the great Lucy, laugh out loud at her jokes! I mean, really! Could their be no higher compliment as to have Lucille Ball, "laugh" at your jokes??? So great!
@keithholman2 Yes, this was her last talk show appearance. Although she did continue to make regular appearances on television up until her death, they were on a far more limited basis.
I was born in 88, and I wish I could have watched when Joan had her own talk show. I would love to experience Carson as well, but I've loved Joan the most.
I remember the news, the final time she came back. My family loved her, and everyone we new loved her, and the new show. But, the media, said she was basically to old. We needed Social Media, back then, to here from the people. Lucille Ball was a great lady, and performer.
I love the I Love Lucy Show she was so hysterical funny also a very beautiful woman and her husband desi he was very handsome and talented too I love them both they made a great couple God bless rip Lucy rip desi yu guys really loved each other yu cld tell beautiful love story gbb
I tried out for Joan for a day and was suppose to be one of the top semi-finalists and meet vip. I got the tickets to see the show but never got to meet her back stage. I really wish I had the opportunity still it was at a hard time for us both I lost my grandpa then and she soon had lost Edgar. I am sorry for both of our losses were very difficult to lose such great men. I pray for you then and now that you would be comforted and bless you as he did with your grandbabe luv laura lee
@misswings83 it would have been such a treat to live during her lifetime and to actually see her in person. i wish she could live forever too, and when i watch i love lucy its like she is alive. i love lucy forever xox
