Vivian Vance was NOT awarded a STAR on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. When fans found out there was outrage...thousands of phone calls etc of outrage with the fact Vivian was NOT given this honour...she was then given the potential of a STAR...but there is a fee (why it was potential)...at that time it was $5,000.00. Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill donated the $5,000.00 so it could happen. Such a beautiful gesture on her part!
@DonnaBrooks
@DonnaBrooks Год назад
I'm so glad you mentioned this! I'd heard that Lucie Arnaz was responsible for Vivian's star on the Walk of Fame, but I didn't want to repeat that until I had a source to cite. Can you please tell me where you got this information? I want to read it (or hear it) myself so I can share it with others. Based on an interview I saw with "Little Lucie", she was very fond of Vivian & admired her talent so it wouldn't surprise me at all that she did this. I just want a source besides, "Some rando wrote it in an internet comments section." LOL I only learned last week that Viv didn't get a start until after her death & I thought that was a travesty! One half of the most well-known, enduring, beloved, & hilarious comedic duo in the world, and no star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! That's insane!
@LJ-ht4zs
@LJ-ht4zs 16 дней назад
@@DonnaBrooks I think the point was a public uproar about her not having a star on the Walk of Fame - the public was responsible - however, $5,000 was needed and Lucie paid for it. However, she was not responsible for the award. I am sure if no one person came forward they could have made a request for donations - I am sure they would have received that easily.

Vivian and Lucy disliked each other at first, but Vivian said, " I'm going to have to learn to love that bitch." I think later on in life they had admiration and respect for each other. It was William Frawley (Fred Mertz) that Vivian really didn't care for. I heard when he died, she celebrated with champagne.
@kelamo7067
@kelamo7067 9 лет назад
Yeah! She didn't appreciate that they gave her such an old husband
@reesescupbrandy1
@reesescupbrandy1 9 лет назад
kelamo Not only that, William Frawley was a well known alcoholic, bigoted, low-class misogynist with mother issues. They picked him, because he was perfect for the "grumpy old man" role such as Fred Mertz. Fred Mertz was just a tamed version of Frawley.

reesescupbrandy1 Lucy and Desi seemed to have liked him enough. Desi took out that whole page in the NYT as a tribute to his friend. And Keith Thibodeaux said he was always kind to him off set. He may have had some bad flaws, but he was not all that nasty apparently.
@reesescupbrandy1
@reesescupbrandy1 9 лет назад
***** Lucy and Desi liked him, because of his work ethic and his sense of humor. They had a deal with him that if he is absent for the show or used alcohol on the set, he would be immediately fired. He may be a nice guy on some occasion, but sometimes his personality turned people off. It wasn't just Vivian who said that either. This is way before my time, so I'm just repeating what other people had said about him. I just find it crazy, that Vivian celebrated his death and didn't want a spin off show, no matter how much money the producers offered her. She didn't want to work with him ever again.

According to Paige Peterson who wrote a book "Growing Up Belvedere-Tiburon" she detailed in a People article in 2020 that: "Viv loved living in Belvedere. She moved to a home [the Farr Cottages] that was cantilevered over the bay and would sit and read for hours on the deck, where she could look at the most beautiful view in the world. In real life Vivian was more the life of the party than Lucy. Lucy in real life was very reserved and even shy, especially during interviews. But, Vivian was like Dean Martin when he was around Sinatra. Vivian could make Lucy laugh in two seconds. Vivian wasn't intimidated by people. She was a people person. That clearly shows here. Vivian took over the interview. But, it was obvious Lucy was afraid of Viv talking about their personal moments as friends. Viv and Lucy -- Legends...RIP.

Chase Jackson's comment is incorrect. Lucy did NOT have anything written in Vivian's contract requiring her to be overweight. THAT IS AN OLD URBAN LEGEND and, geez, will it ever die??? Alvin Walker, who is interviewed here and who wrote Vivian's biography dispelled that myth 15 years ago. In fact, this urban legend grew out of the very gag contract that Vivian is reading here on this show. This contract WAS JUST A JOKE. Lucy created it as a gag at a surprise birthday party she threw for Vivian. And anyone who is very familiar with "I Love Lucy" knows that Vivian actually got SLIMMER as the show progressed. Also, Chase, Vivian was Lucy's co-star on "THE LUCY SHOW," not "Here's Lucy." It is true that Vivian increased her demands to remain on the show and Lucy ultimately refused, but it was probably mostly a ruse because from the very beginning, Vivian never was that interested in doing the show and had to be coaxed and cajoled into doing it. She was living on the East Coast and hated her cross-country commute and separation from her husband. So she needed a huge incentive to continue doing that, so she kept upping her demands until it was beyond what Lucy was willing to accept. As for Lucy not letting other people shine on her show, anyone who is familiar with her various series knows that is simply not true. In fact, part of what makes I Love Lucy so great is the supporting cast on that show. Vivian Vance and William Frawley were always great and were given wonderfully funny lines and scenes to work with. It earned Vivian an Emmy. The show was really an ensemble. Lucy's biggest concern about her show was that it be a good show. She WANTED her other cast mates to shine for the good of the show. On Lucy's later series, she brought many guest stars on her show and often gave the spotlight to them. Wayne Newton even credits Lucy as one of the reasons he became a star, because she brought him on her show a number of times with scripts centered around him. Another example: Barbara Eden. Look up one of her interviews where she contrasts what it was like working for Lucy versus Ann Sothern. Lucy LITERALLY made her shine on her show by personally sitting down and punching sequins into Barbara's dress so she would stand out more. The plot of that episode was about Lucy being jealous of Barbara Eden's young and beautiful character, and Lucy wanted to play up the youth and beauty of Barbara for the good of the show, to make the plot more believable. There are many examples, these are just a couple.
@MrVidaeverdade
@MrVidaeverdade 10 лет назад
And as for Ethel being frumpy, THAT WAS THE CHARACTER! Chase, do you realize how ridiculous it would have looked for Ethel to be glamorous and married to dumpy and cheap Fred Mertz? The Fred and Ethel Mertz characters were based on characters (the Atterburys) from Lucy's radio series, My Favorite Husband. The same writers who wrote that show also created I Love Lucy. They envisioned the Mertzes as an older couple, like the Atterburys, but less well off. William Frawley was initially cast, then they went searching for an actress to play his wife. Vivian Vance was a friend of director, Marc Daniels, who recommended her. Vivian Vance was much younger and prettier than the character was supposed to be; hence, Lucy's initial skepticism. But Vivian wanted the role so badly that she showed up in a bathrobe and curlers to prove she could look the part. It did later bother her that the pubic only associated her with this frumpy character, but it was a role she had fought to get. It was much easier to have her character on The Lucy Show dress in chic fashions because there was no longer a Fred Mertz by her side.

There was a story I read back in the mid-'70s about "I Love Lucy". When Lucy was pregnant, they moved her dressing room closer to the set. Viv's was a bit further away, and a bit more difficult to get to. She had to maneuver herself through wires and cables. For one scene, Viv had to make a fast trip to her dressing room and change clothes. She finally paired with Lucy, and Lucy somewhat angrily told her "you're late...you almost missed your cue". At that point, Viv made a comment to Lucy, "I would tell you to get fucked, but I see someone's already taken care of that!".

Thank your for your introspect/experience, as I had heard (via Gossip Tabloids) that Lucy had no respect for Vivian as she was the star. Nice to see the YT upload & your words of proof that that story is wrong, wrong, wrong. Love the old "I love Lucy" it is currently rerunning late night where I live. Some days I catch it and laugh feeling like it was written two days ago... humour is always current. Desi knew how to play second banana with no ego. Brilliant couple can see how his 'playboy' ways broke her heart...don't think she ever stopped loving him.
@MrVidaeverdade
@MrVidaeverdade 9 лет назад
***** Actually, Lucy had tremendous respect for Vivian, and when she started out on her second series, The Lucy Show, she would not do it without Vivian. Vivian had a lot of demands going into that show and those demands were met. A lot of this gossip comes out of the fact that Vivian had to dress in frumpy clothes on I Love Lucy. But she was playing the part of Fred Mertz's wife. She couldn't look like a glamourpuss and be accepted as his wife. It wouldn't be authentic. Lucy's concern was that the actors look like their characters. And Vivian's character on I Love Lucy was a middle-aged woman who was not glamorous. When there were characters on the show who WERE supposed to be glamorous, Lucy made sure that they did exude every bit of the glamour the part required. For example, go listen to one of Barbara Eden's interviews about being on the show and how Lucy went out of her way to glam up Barbara's wardrobe. Gossip magazines and TV shows will say whatever they can to make for an interesting story. But the facts aren't always there. Even the contract Vivian reads in this segment, which was a gag contract Lucy gave Vivian at a surprise birthday party she gave her, urban legend has turned this gag into a real contract when it never was. Vivian was NOT required to be overweight on the show; it was a joke.

Viv was the master of the snarky comeback. “If I’d known this is what friends are for, I’d have signed up as an enemy.” “I have sufficient.” “Well perhaps I’ll develop other talents like folding up road maps and keeping an eye open for clean restrooms.” “I wouldn’t do it if you took that pretty please, put sugar on it, poured brandy over it, and LIT it!”

You can credit Desi Arnaz for casting Ethel. A friend of Arnaz who had seen a play Vance was performing in recommended her. Desi went to see her stage performance and was convinced Vance was right for the part of Ethel. They could not get Bea Benaderet, everyone’s first choice. She was committed to the Burns & Allen show, which _I Love Lucy_ borrowed a good bit. Unable to get Benaderet, Lucille Ball suggested Barbara Pepper, a dear friend a talented actor, who also could have been great in the role, but she was an alcoholic. Since William Frawley, who was already cast, was a drinker, and CBS was unwilling to take a risk on a second problem drinker. Desi’s judgement made history and made the show the one we love to this day.

Wow...Dinah, Lucy and Vivian...a trio of my favorites. As far as Lucy mentioning a jewel on a lady's forehead as being politically incorrect...oh gee gimme a break! In the 1970s we all laughed and people had the liberty to say what they wanted to say but these days every sensitive moron just waits for someone to say anything that they think offends their culture and boom it's a federal issue! No wonder I prefer TV of the 1970s over today's overly sensitive population.

@MoonstoneFoxy
@MoonstoneFoxy 4 года назад
@doso don yes you could make that inference based on the knowledge of God's word and what he says. It is very exclusive there can only be one truth. Truth by definition is very narrow. Everyone has free will we can believe what we want to believe. Jesus says He is the Way the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except by Me, John 14:6. So therefore if you don't love Jesus and don't accept him into your heart you don't get to go to heaven. Why would anyone want to go to heaven if they don't love Jesus and God. God is a loving God and doesn't make us do anything against our will. It is solely our choice.
