The most fabulous Lucinda Williams. This is a song about Blaze Foley, the great songwriter. Blaze died young, stepping in front of a bullet meant for his friend. My girlfriend shared a flat for a time with Lucinda Williams when they were both in their 20s (in the late 60s) in New Orleans. She said Lucinda would sing and play guitar at a local New Orleans cafe. Just starting out and writing her own songs. I saw Lucinda and Buick Six in Bellingham, WA a few years back. I gave her my 50s electric Harmony Espanada guitar that I thought she could play while writing her next phenomenal song. She really helped me when I was really hurting. Playing my guitar to her voice and songs. Thanks Lucinda.
Don't mean to be a gotcha shmuck, But this song is not about Blaze, its about Lucinda's former boyfriend, Clyde Woodward. And it certainly is a beaute, my Lucinda fave. The song about Blaze Foley is 'Drunken Angle'. Best.
This always soothes my soul. On a 30-hour train journey from El Paso to New Orleans, the train stopped in Lake Charles to take on passengers. I jumped off and lit a cigarette, played this on my headphones, and shed a tear. Got back on board my train, Spent 3 days in New Orleans and flew home to the west of Ireland. That 10 minutes is a cherished memory. Thank you, Lucinda.
I think Lucinda is primarily a Poet. I note that although she is comfortable singing IN FRONT of an audience, she is not singing TO the audience. She doesn't attempt to engage the audience with her personality. She sometimes even stops playing and rests her hands on her guitar because she just wants to get those words out. Words that can break your heart if you listen to them.
Wow. Doesn't get much better than this, does it? Ever since I first heard this, I've wanted to buy a yellow El Camino and play a Howlin' Wolf 8-track while I'm driving.
Ha ha My daddy wanted my first vehicle to be an El C. I lost him 3yrs ago. We discovered this song from HBO TrueBlood series. After his death I began to sing this song a lot. Sadly he was alone when he passed. I hope an Angel was with him as well. This song is a special song to me forever
He had a reason to get back to Lake Charles He used to talk about it He'd just go on and on He always said Louisiana Was where he felt at home He was born in Nacogdoches That's in East Texas Not far from the border But he liked to tell everybody He was from Lake Charles Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments We used to drive Through Lafayette and Baton Rouge In a yellow Camino Listening to Howling Wolf He liked to stop in Lake Charles 'Cause that's the place that he loved Did you run about as far as you could go Down the Louisiana highway Across Lake Pontchartrain Now your soul is in Lake Charles No matter what they say Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments He had a reason to get back to Lake Charles He used to talk about it He'd just go on and on He always said Louisiana Was where he felt at home Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments Did an angel whisper in your ear And hold you close and take away your fear In those long last moments In those long last moments
I discovered Lucinda on a previous ACL show… The one where it was a triple bill with her, Roseanne Cash, and Bruce Cockburn- who I’d tuned in for. Was a casual fan of Roseanne already, gained a greater appreciation for her on this show, but Lucinda was unknown to me. I became an instant fan - went out and bought “sweet old world” at my earliest opportunity. Not long after, “car wheels on a gravel road” came out - bought it without hearing a single note. Hard core Lucinda fan ever since
Thank you, Lucinda, for an amazing song. "He used to talk about it ... he would go on and on" ... BEAUTIFUL!!! This will probably never get read, but I couldn't help myself!
Listening to this from Ireland, if I can't be home then Louisiana would be my choice,I oftentimes get nostalgic for my time with the lovely people of Scott and Lafayette, especially today Thanksgiving 🦃🦃
Forgive my lack of musical terms, but I love that the notes in her music don’t fluctuate wildly like most pop songs. The words feel natural like a friend sharing a story.
Sending prayers out to all those in the path of Hurricane Laura. Especially to those in Lake Charles & surrounding area's. She looks like a mean one. Be safe.
This song always reminded me of a passing friend, friend seems an understatement, when you shared 30 years of life, laughter and sorry living outside the law
I can relate I just lost my father the 14th of this month and I lost my brother a couple years ago and the song helps me so much try little brother Little Angel by Lucinda Williams as well you will just love it!
Woke up with this playing in my ear which is a place in my morning consciousness that was previously reserved for the likes of Dylan or Cohen, thank you Lucinda for joining the crowd of sweet troubadours playing gently in my morning mind :)

Years and years ago I bought a few CDs and got a sampler cassette from Rough Trade records with a bunch of punk rock on it - and Passionate Kisses! The next day I went back and they had "Lucinda Williams" on the rack so I bought that. My lucky day.
One of my favourite songs from Lucinda, Just saw her a couple of nights ago here in Bristol. She was great - a really lovely lady with a knockout voice & really memorable songs...
Every time I listen to this, and its fairly often, I wonder if there is some connection between this beautiful song and "Sweet old World" Anybody know?
That accordion player is Greg Husted aka Atticus Finch. He’s an old friend of mine and the best musician I’ve ever known. Lucinda fired him because she was intimidated by his talent. He’s one of the best Hammond B3 players in the business. Rock on Atticus my berm brother!
I love her music she kicks she opened for Tom Petty when I saw her early 2000. My Jack Russell HATED this song every time I played it he would HOWL terrible. He'd only do it to this song 😨 WEIRD! 😂
