When Traffic came out with this song I was 23 years old, recently graduated from college, had a good job, and few really nice girl friends, and listening to some REALLY good music...all before piss testing. Life was good. I’m 70 years old now, recently retired from a very good job and career, been married to the same wonderful woman for 42 years, still listing to some REALLY good music....and no piss tests! Life is STILL good!

Cheers my good Man, I'm 62 and LOVE this, it is dedicated to my Brother Al RIP. He always would say to me "If you had just a minute to breathe and they granted you one final wish Would you ask for something like another chance? Or something similar as this? Don't worry too much It'll happen to you as sure as your sorrows are joys, And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound of The low spark of high-heeled boys, If I gave you everything I owned and asked for nothing in return, would you do the same for me as I would for you? or take me for a ride, and strip me of everything including my pride? But spirit is something that no one destroys" REST IN PEACE Munir.

I work with people who have dementia so I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes music brings them back to reality when they are having a "bad day". I once had a resident that was having a "bad day" and I told him to get his guitar and play "Jack and Diane" for me. He stumbled through it but got it down then played a few more songs that eventually led to him playing "Round About" so then I started asking him questions about real life and reality and he was much better and was able to carry on a full conversation and was able to find his way back to his own room and get himself ready for bed. The power of music is unbelievable!! You know, real music. Not this stuff they call "music" nowadays.

I'm in my early 30s and was introduced to Traffic by my dad when I was about 12. This remains one of my favorite songs of all time. However, I really feel the cynical current in this comment section that "the kids these days don't make good music like this" is bullshit. I am a musician and know lots of other talented musicians. There is tons of great music being created and played today. Have you heard of Charlie Hunter or Badbadnotgood or Radiohead or Kamasi Washington or any number of other awesome, talented artists? The same father who showed me Traffic is, at 69 years old, still excitedly sending me new artists he hears. Don't get caught in the trap of nostalgia--there is always something fresh to live for.

Frank Zappa once told me (and probably lots of other people over the years) "You have to remember that over 95% of the music written in any period is crap. We think the Classical period is great, because we listen to Haydn and Mozart, but there were a couple hundred other guys making their livings as composers at the time, and we DON'T listen to them." There are, though, periods when musical innovation breaks loose, and amazing things happen. The late 60's through the 70's was one such.

here's the deal: a lot of musicians in this era started young--they learned instruments and sang in choirs as kids. They learned MUSIC. It was in the broader culture. Then kids went to shows and heard bands like traffic and didn't know that this was JAZZ-influenced. We just absorbed the eclectic experience of the vast talents out there. This is not 4/4 rock n roll. So many bands threw in jazz, classical, folk, country, etc. Culture is in the body--you cannot explain it or synthesize it.

The American Music Awards is about "pop" music. Traffic were never "pop." While true that during the mid to late 60s and most of the 70s "pop" music was largely driven by the influence of rock, it is a mistake to confuse the two. Just as the pop music of the 40s and much of the fifties was driven by swing, and pop in the 90s was driven by hip hop, don't expect "pop" to rise to the level of the music that influences it.

@@martinkent333 Undoubtedly, Chris was a train wreck. But, if you look at what he contributed to the band when playing, he was huge part. They wouldn't have been Traffic without him, especially on Low Spark and John Barleycorn.

I would sneak out at midnight with my brother and burn one in 1973. Then listen to this song at 2:00 am .I miss those days and my brother.

When you've seen the rock, funk, soul and jazz bands from that time, LIVE, it's hard to get excited about today's music.
@tahseti1113

I'm aware of that, but the difference is that back in those days, you didn't have to ''find'' it. All you had to do was turn on your radio.

2gunshogun there is still really good music being made today. You just have to seek it out. It's not mainstream like it was back then. Look up Ryley Walker and Kevin Morby.

Have become fascinated by Chris Wood's contribution. So many Traffic songs owe their uniqueness to the flute or sax parts.

Something about that song . . . Steve Winwood has a way of lightly tapping, then pounding on the piano keys to get the effect he wants, underrated.

Traffic remains one of the very best bands of all time. A perfect combo of rock, jazz, lyrical elegance and high musicianship. Loved it back in the day, still love it now. Thanks for this great jam!!

Totally awesome song from my youth, the 1970's, when music was everything. What a pleasure to see this old performance of Traffic, it's my favourite of their songs!!!! Thanks for posting!!!!

Of all the good songs of that period, probably the most shocking single line to me is that "we were children once, playing with toys" . When i first hear it, gave me chills and that heat in the back of the neck/head, that happens when you see, listen or understands somenthing that completely blows your mind. All that strange and ugly and bad and sad and tired journey brought me to who i am today, it's kinda hard to grasp the memories and the simple notion that, not too long ago, i really was a kid, just playing.
