LUFFY VS USOPP! One Piece Ep 235/236 Reaction/Review 

Usopp has abandonment issues. His dad left him. His mom died shortly after. The only person his age that befriended him was dying just like his mother. His insecurities about being abandoned came out during this fight. He thinks because he's weak they'll leave him like the Going Merry.

Y'all gotta understand Usopp represents the "human" of the group. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. Luffy, Sanji, Zoro are the powerhouses of the group. You can't put him in that category. And there are several reasons why it's harder for him to let go of Merry. It was entrusted to them by his dear friend. Even though he's not a shipwright, he's the one that's been repairing all this time. And he doesn't want to give up on it. You guys have to see it from his perspective.

A pirate's ship is his most prized position and has a lot of sentimental value even in real life. Thats why pirate ships are named. Usopp thought that since they left Merry behind when she became a burden they would eventually do the same to him since he already can't fight so that plays into his insecurities as well.

Respect for Evan though for still sticking up for Usopp.

The main plot of this fight is that before the battle Usopp lost 200 mill because he was weak, then right after, he hears that Strawhats are getting rid of the Going Merry. Usopp was afraid that he will get left behind as well, oneday, he thought that is the way Luffy is. The second thing, is that Usopp was looking at Luffy not as a captain, but as a best friend and did not know about the captain's duty to be responcible for the whole crew.

Merry is not just a boat. Also this fight is not only for Merry, is for the fear that Usopp have that Luffy is just going to leave him behind when he feel Ussop is not necessary or useful.

You guys have to understand the going merry was everything for Usopp, it was a gift that was given by Kaya, he always took care of it no matter what. If you still don’t understand the going merry for Usopp is like the straw hat for Luffy. Can you imagine what Luffy would think if someone said that his straw hat wouldn’t be able to get fixed and have to get a new one.

a pirate ship is a crews home....it's not just a vehicle. it's essentially a part of the crew. also u have to see it from usopps point of view. them getting rid of the merry is basically them getting rid of usopp as the shipwright....it's not only the ship his girl gave them but it was his job for the longest time to fix the ship...he did his best but it's hard to accept your own failings that put them in that situation. because usopp couldn't take care of the ship it's basically him and the crew coming to terms with his lack of repair skills which the result is the lost of a "crew member" and "home"

It's as simple as this. You guys are viewing the ship as an object where usopp views it as another member of the crew. If we take it from that perspective they are essentially abandoning a fellow crew member that got too weak to continue the adventure and will replace them. If they can do that to one crew member what is stopping them From abandoning usopp when they get to stronger opponents. That's all it is if you continue thinking of merry as just a ship of course it doesn't make sense but it's a representation of usopp and how he feels now that he's been stomped out twice 🤷🏿‍♂️.

People act like Luffy is some kind of saint when he escalated the situation by: 1) opening with getting a new ship without telling Usopp why and 2) telling Usopp to fuck off the ship, the exact thing Usopp was most afraid of and the thing that basically explains why Usopp did what he did. Usopp was afraid of being abandoned for not being strong enough. The Merry was symbolic of how Usopp really felt about himself and the fears he had with being abandoned. He figured if the crew was leaving the Merry behind, how long before they decide to leave him behind once he stops being useful. Remember Usopp trying to repair the ship? That was him trying to be useful in whatever capacity he could manage because he knows he's not strong like the others. Usopp more than anyone else knows how weak he is. Luffy telling Usopp to leave the ship reaffirmed all the terrible things Usopp has told himself, that he's weak, he's worthless, and a fraud. You can say what you will about Usopp but in that moment on the Merry, Luffy failed to be the leader Usopp needed. As the ship's leader, Luffy was too quick to tell Usopp to leave the ship. A shame that only Evan even bothered to understand, but this is RTTV, can't expect critical thinking from their reactions because any "show don't tell" moments will completely go over their heads.

Ussop fought for Merry just as luffy would have faught for his hat. It was a lot to him, it was his treasure. it wasn't just a "ship" just like luffy's hat wasn't just a "hat". He had to fight the captain because the ship was under it's captain.

The merry is a real crewmate and also representative of Ussop. Always getting hurt. Falling apart. and because hes not strong hes getting left behind.

The reason Usopp got so defensive is because he sees himself as the weakest member of the crew. When he sees Luffy and everyone else give up on the Marry because it's not strong enough to continue on their journey, he wonders if the same thing will happen to him. That's why he's acting so irrational.

You guys have it backwards at the end: Usopp HAD to go that hard to fight Luffy. He did it because he respects him, same way he told Luffy not to hold back vs him. You know how disrespectful it is to challenge someone to a duel, and NOT give it your all? He knows Luffy best, and knows what he can and can't take. Obviously he wasn't trying to or going to ever kill him, but that doesn't mean he has to hold back

I really don't think you guys understand that the ship is a member of the crew just as much as everyone else is. The ship has brought them through so much throughout the course of their journey, and Luffy leaving it behind is essentially the same as leaving behind a friend who can't fight anymore to rot and die because they're no use to you. Even though it is just a ship, Usopp can relate to the feeling of being a less essential member of the crew, and to see Luffy abandon the Merry makes Usopp wonder just how far he will go to achieve his dream even if it means tossing his friends aside.

You don't get it because you're not watching it for the characters and their arc. You're watching it for the action sequences. You're watching it and putting yourself in their shoes without understanding what each character went through to get to this point. So all you see is two people arguing about needing a new boat. But Usopp and the crew sees their home that dragged them from one island to the next fighting the fights they couldn't. They see a friend in the ship the same way they do each other, and its not hard to suspend belief to think these characters can get emotional about losing something that started their journey towards their dreams. Not any harder than seeing any other anime with their magics and jutsus. Usopp was gifted this boat by a friend from his village and he sees his friends agreeing to "throw away" a companion that's now become useless, and he's afraid he's next. It is frustrating as all hell watching you guys react to this show but refuse to even attempt to follow along when there are no fights on screen. It doesn't have to be your favorite thing ever but you're doing it and us a huge disservice by just brushing off everything because you wouldn't act the same in that situation. You're not usopp or luffy, but by now you should understand them better than you guys do. The fact that a crew member is upset yall ready to throw him off the ship. Bye bye. Jeez. This is convincing me to stop watching any of your reactions.

Evan is the GOAT and understood this episode more than anyone....Usopp pissed me off this ND was doing some hoe shit this episode but I was so proud of him for actually being able to go toe-to-toe with Luffy was impressive. Second, Usopp went and bought the shurikens IN ORDER to fight Luffy that's why he set a time to fight, so he could prep. Thirdly, Usopp put himself in the going merry's shoes. Since the going merry was weak and they were getting rid of it, he felt that since HE was weak, they would do the SAME THING to HIM, one day. Usopp was just feeling angry and insecure and wanted to prove himself....GOD USOPP! 💪🏾

I think they don’t focus enough on the fact that ussop sees himself and the ship as a combo package like fixing the ship is all he’s good for because he sees himself as weak. And at the end of the day his ambition isn’t to be a famous pirate but to be proud of the man he’s become

The ship is apart of the crew! It’s not just some “materialistic thing.” If you were Usopp and witnessed what he did on Skypea, you would react the same exact way. It’s not just like a car that can get replaced, it’s an active functioning member of the crew!

Usopp had an emotional attachment to the ship. The same how when some people get their shoes stepped on (even by accident) they will get mad and sometimes start a fight. We all have an emotional attachment to at least one object in our lives. Could be your phone, your car, your laptop or even a gift your parent(s) gave you as a kid that you kept to this day. Shit like that can all be related to our attachments to them, otherwise, we wouldn't give a damn what happens to any of our stuff.

I really wish thwy watched G8. Not only was it a much better arc than the Long Ring Long Land Arc, it really showcased how important the Going Merry was to everyone, and how important the money was because they needed it to fix her. That couldve been a much better setup to whats happening now, and it really wouldve built on Usopps character so much more...

Yeah, there's a reason that the rest of the crew sided with Luffy here. That said, ships in this universe aren't like irl cars either, and Luffy himself has stressed the importance of things like the pirate's flag on multiple occasions. Anyway... I've never seen such a severe lack of empathy for the Merry like this before. It'll be interesting to see if anybody switches up later.
