**One Note: I wanted to mention the difficulty for Lufia II, but failed to do so in my review. I would say that it's moderate. Early game can be pretty rough, but mid/late game I didn't find too much resistance.
I really enjoyed Lufia & the Fortress of Doom. I don't think I was ready for what Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals had in store for me! Check out my review above!

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, known as Estpolis Denki II (エストポリス伝記II, Esutoporisu Denki II, officially translated Biography of Estpolis II[2]) in Japan, and as Lufia in Europe and Australia, is a role-playing video game with puzzle elements developed by Neverland and published in Japan in 1995 by Taito, and in North America and Europe in 1996 by Natsume and Nintendo respectively, for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the second title in the Lufia series.

Brief Notes: Lufia 2's difficulty... a bit hard towards the beginning, then mellows out considerably. Also! My graphics dig on Lufia 2 is mostly regarding towns & overworlds, I feel like they aren't as detailed and nice looking as I'd like a game to be this late into a console's lifecycle. That being said: great game! I think your review is pretty much spot on. My biggest gripe was also the Linearity, which is most definitely the place. Every single land based area in the game follows the same formula & is set up the same way. One single town and dungeon within a land mass, and a shrine or bridge of some kind you can't pass thru til you beat said dungeon for whoever runs the town. Rinse, lather, repeat. Luckily the story & game mechanics are all tippy top notch so it doesn't really matter, but a bit more choice & openness sure would have been nice.

Lufia 2 was a great game I liked how it brought a lot more to the dungeons then the first game. It reminded me of Wild ARMs with how the dungeons had a ton of puzzles and you got different ways to solve the puzzles. The music in Lufia 2 was great as well and it was cool to see that they brought running into enemies to get into encounters in comparison to Lufia 1 where it was all random encounters.

Wild ARMs was a game I thought of a lot as well when playing Lufia 2! Both great in their own right. The dungeons were so vastly improved from the first Lufia as you said. I still like the first a lot, I think they compliment each other - especially with the evolution and growth, but man Lufia 2 is great!

There's actually a pretty fantastic patch for this game called Frue Lufia that fixes most all of the bugs in the game as well as fixing some translation errors. It is pretty much the definitive way to play the game these days & I highly recommend it!

It's on my list to get to at some point! Just don't know when. Currently in the midst of a huge King's Field deep dive and have a couple other games lined up. But I will, at some point, get to Frue. Thanks for watching & all the comments.

Another great video & review, man! The 2 Lufia games have been on my JRPG bucket list for a while now, just been slowly working through the "Tales of" series, Ys, and Dragon Quest (all three recommended), but I need to play these as well. Almost done with Phantasy Star though, just have the 4th one which I hear insane things about. Keep on keeping the interest alive, bro! You do great work!

Thanks for the kind words! Always nice to hear that once in a while for reassurance haha. As far as Lufia goes, the first two are great. I also really enjoyed Lufia & the Fortress of Doom. I think it would be foolish of me to say that Lufia II isn't "better" in almost every way, but the first is still a good time aside from some hard "you have to grind or you can't win here" spots for magic spell learning, intense encounter rates at times, etc. But hey, with them being out of order sequel/prequels, the story perspectives are pretty cool! I've been really wanting to go through Dragon Quest II again so I can push through III & IV, but I've just been focusing on other titles. I wish I could clone myself! How have you been liking the Tales series? The only one I played was Arise for about 15 hours (dropped it for RU-vid projects)... but I really want to play Phantasia one of these days haha. Also Schmitt who is in my community has been pressuring me for Ys for a while, they look great, just need to allocate the time!

@Bitsandglory Ys is great, I strongly recommend Ys 1&2 for the TG-CD, as the music is awesome and 1 ends on a cliff hanger that 2 immediately picks up from. They're kinda meant to be played together. Fast action, simple gameplay, surprisingly good story & mystery. Tales of Phantasia, while grindy and a bit "messy", but it's so impressive (largest SNES ROM size) and the core gameplay is fun enough that I had a really good time with it. I'm gearing up for a blind Tales of Destiny run now. Also, DQ4 was insanely good, caught me off-guard. I was not expecting it to be anywhere near as ahead of its time and creative as it was, and I think it smokes the hell out of DQ1-3. I'd actually rank DQ4 as the best 8-bit JRPG in all honesty. Starting on DQ5 soon.

Oooh, that has me excited for DQ4! That's awesome to hear. And the TG-CD was the one I was hoping to play as well for YS! I have the Everdrive for the TG which can do CD games without the add-on, but the issue is the friggen audio is like... missing in some spots? So it kinda kills the immersion. So I'm hoping for a firmware update or something, otherwise I might have to emulate it completely when I get around to it. I decided to never go down the TG-CD realm because of the prices haha@@montefisto

I remember playing this when it came out and I can't explain how cool it was to play it and find out it is a prequel to another game that I liked. It's just a shame that it's lost to time and apparently won't be re-released.

I would be totally on board with a re-release, or maybe a tasteful remake… but sadly it seems like a dead in the water franchise as you basically said. I’m glad I finally got around to it!

I owned this game back in the day CIB and sold it for 25 dollars.. boy do I regret that now.. this game AINT cheap! And its also a great game id love to play again (original hardware only with the original cart!)

I was lucky enough to upgrade my cart only copy to CIB back in 2021 for about $100ish less than what it goes for now, glad I got all the extras then! Such a great game, one of the best!

Thanks for the shout out Bits! (faints from embarrassment) It brightens my day to hear how much you enjoy this game. I've known it to be one of the best games of all time since I first rented from my local shop as a kid. I've been so swamped with grad school and finding out the shop I manage is closing, so soon to be job hunting, I haven't been able to dedicate much time to watching longer LPs. I can't wait to get back to this one though and see which puzzles really gave your brain a work out.

I'm glad your suggestion won the poll, because I probably would have found a way to continue to delay it like many other quality titles I keep putting off haha. Sorry to hear about the job hunting, I had a rough stretch back in 2016 where it took forever for me to find something so hope it goes quick! And no worries, I've mentioned on other vids that LP's are basically a dead format so I don't expect much traction at all from them. I just enjoy getting them up & most importantly having the footage for the reviews!

There's also a difficulty mod called Spekkio or something, but I've heard that it's REALLY dumb hard at the end... like incredibly cheap and kind of ruins the fun. But who knows! The Ancient Cave is a great SNES game! The DLC, "Lufia 2" campaign is alright, I guess.

Often overlooked by the masses (aka the casuals), completely recommend a playthrough even if it's just on Super Console X or something. Ancient Cave dives FTW!

lufia 2 feels way more...traditional as a game than lufia 1. and the puzzles were difficult and numerous. also, there were a lot of bugs in the game. that dragged the score down a bit. lufia 1 honestly does the battle system better, and avoids the use of puzzles for the most part.

While I agree that Lufia 2 certainly isn't a graphical masterpiece, it was never meant to be. It was meant to be a smaller ROM size compared to many other JRPG's at the time, & that is likely why the graphics & animation aren't that impressive. I'd say they are more than good enough though & the fantastic music, story & game mechanics MORE than make up for it! I think it is EASILY in the TOP 5 of best SNES JRPG's of all time. I must also say that I wholeheartedly disagree about FF6 looking way better. I don't even think it looks better at all myself, specially when it has no enemy battle animations at all. At least this game tries to do a little something with that even if it isn't much.

Haha, is that the encounter that typically you lose, but it's possible to win? I definitely did not on my playthrough.

While I wouldn't play Lufia 1 without the QOL romhacks these days, like restored functions, Lufia 2 felt a little undercooked. Look at the Sinistrals in this game and compare them to Lufia. Underwhelming. The capsule monsters being an afterthought and will never keep up in boss battles mean you have someone who dies all the time and down 10+ levels.

I really, really enjoyed Lufia 2 despite its (to me) few shortcomings. That being said, I like to defend Lufia 1 a lot. Seems like some fans of Lufia 2 are pretty dismissive of the first. Obviously yeah, archaic compared to the second, but still a fun game and in some ways better. Capsule monsters certainly could have been handled better, for sure. But IDK, for me, this game gave me many, many hours of joy and I loved doing all the optional/sidequesty stuff - especially the Ancient Cave. Ended up being really pleased with it.

I personally think Lufia 1 is generally correctly rated. I can't say that it's mind-blowing and deserving of sky high scores, but I really enjoyed it for what it was. That being said, Lufia 2 is better in just about every way and completely agree. It's right up there with the best of the best. As I said in the review, I think people that are "in the know" get it... but a lot of the more casual retro gamers don't usually include it up with the FF6's, Chrono Triggers, etc. and it's just as good, or better in some ways, than those.
