Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951)
Forgotten Melodies, Op. 38, No. 6, Canzona Serenata (1916-1922)
Nikolai Lugansky, 2014
From Moscow Philharmonic Society
Medtner, ‘Forgotten Melodies’, • Lugansky - Medtner, ‘F...
“After the expulsion from the Paradise of Art, such as was, for instance, the Renaissance epoch in Italy, or the efflorescence of music in Germany, when artistic creation was in the hands not only of individuals, but of collective forces, not only of geniuses, but whole schools, not of one single generation, but of many - we, exiles scattered all over the world, detached from all heritage and succession, must earn our works of art by hard labour, like miners, and not attempt to pluck them like the flowers of the fields, as we saunter through them.”
Nikolai Medtner, “The Muse and the Fashion” (1935), translated by A. Swan

I'm learning this piece right now 🤭💗

hahaha, i meant to discover what this piece is, as it's often used as an excerpt by radio programs and TV documentary. Now i finally know it's Medtner. I can tell this will be very difficult to play without accent and refinement and then that middle section goes piano concerto for a few bars. It's one of these pieces many pianists can learn the notes but almost none will play satisfactorily from beginning to end like Luganski does.

Like this comparatively slower pace than some I’ve heard. Thanks

Slower but actually the correct tempo. Others don't understand the music.

Very beautifully performed. I've also heard this performed by Alexander Malofeev, just as beautifully at this slower pace, but I can't seem to find it on yt now. If anyone sees it, please post the link. Thank you! Meanwhile, this is wonderfully played by Lugansky.

Hello, you can find video of Malofeev’s interpretation on the channel “Eve Wong” on her latest video! (it’s 43 minutes long) It’s part of a compilation of his playing. Hope this helps!

I heard Malofeev version first. I already disapproved Malofeev's interpretation before hearing Luganski. Luganski has the right interpretation right from the beginning and especially in the middle section.

Medtner is an undiscovered genius, the way some composers go through a long period of being left out after the death. this piece is extremely difficult to render musically from beginning to end, more so than Chopin, Scriabin, Schumann. It takes a pure soul to find the poetry and meaning of every passage in it, and this is the only artist that reveals the masterpiece. Other top world stage pianists fail magistraly at it , their technique and color won't help them without the finely tuned musical mind, which Lugansky is a rare genius to have. only Rachmnaninov would make this piece even more meaningful with his exquisite rubato (especially his de-rubato) and more phantasmagorical . Many so called legendary pianists are very limited musically (first 3 letters of their names only) : Hor, Pol, Arg, Kis, Lan. I believe no contemporary pianist can match this interpretation (some might be able to copy it, if they listen and train from it).

Попытки Метнера спрятать музыкальную бессодержательность за объявляемой программностью бесполезны.
