Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
Lilacs, Op. 21, No. 5. Composed in 1902, the song was adapted into solo piano transcription around 1913 by Rachmaninoff himself. The solo piano version was often used as an encore piece by the composer.
Nikolai Lugansky, 1994 Tchaikovsky Competition Encore.

Лилейники в потоке солнечного света. В них столько нежных звуков чистота.Стою в потоке, ожидая лета,и льется музыка Великого Творца.

I’ve come back time and time again over the years to this short poem, it’s so nonchalant in the stream of the internet, but brings me to face the beauty of our collective human experience. Artfully written, it’s beautiful-thank you 🤍

Why did the high A flat have to be so loud at the end… It’s diminuendo _from pianissimo,_ not to be accented. Playing it this way made it sound like a clarified final note instead of drifting off and letting the low A flat give the softened ending that perfects the piece.

Artistic choice, I like it

Rachmaninov brings out that high A flat too. Well, these dummies--Rachmaninov and Lugansky--what do they know. By the way, I think it's OK to play differently than the composer, and to not follow the score. Composers who perform don't always follow their own scores. Good luck with your diminuendo from pianissimo--look forward to hearing it.

I would argue from a purely musical standpoint that yes that final high A flat is probably a little loud if we’re being ultra picky, but let’s be blunt right now. This was an encore after a concert so Lugansky will undoubtedly have been tired and he is one of the finest musicians in the world. I find it astonishing that such a little detail has even been criticised. The playing is amazing, far better than almost anyone on Earth can do, has done and will ever do. Ridiculous to moan about it.
