Those “lines going through the screen” are called scan lines and old TVs used to look like that because the image was projected using red, green, and blue beams that swept back and forth really fast while moving down the screen to form the picture using individual horizontal lines. (And the 8-bit graphics Usually match the size of the scanlines perfectly, so one row of pixels is the exact thickness of one scanline)
