Luister is a documentary about the lives of students of colour who attend Stellenbosch University, a South African institution of higher learning. In a series of interviews, students recount instances of racial prejudice that they continue to experience in the town of Stellenbosch, and the enormous challenges that they face due to the use of Afrikaans as a language of teaching at the university. Luister is a film about Afrikaans as a language and a culture. It is a film about the continuing racism that exists within a divided society. It is a film about a group of students whose stories have been ignored. Luister is the Afrikaans word for Listen.

As a Stellies student currently, this really opens my eyes to the social problems that many people experience and that I have never noticed. Being on the privileged side of the equation shelters you from the reality that many people have to live with, and it's a sad fact many people don't want to notice or acknowledge. I'm sorry, for anything I have done or said that contributes to the continuation of these prejudices, and I personally promise to do and be better.

This documentary seeks to give those that haven't had voice a chance to let the world know what Stellenbosch University really is like. These students have had to hold a lot of their experiences and trauma in . I am sorry to burst your bubble , but it's time to listen to and most importantly acknowledge the violations committed by the Stellenbosch residents and the University .

Kile Wotshela Some of the arguments the students make are valid and should be addressed by the university, especially with respect to discrimination and racial slurs. However, some other comments are , quite frankly, absurd such as the girl who said that, because she couldn't go to school in Xhosa and had to learn in English, everybody else, including native Afrikaans speakers, should also learn in English only. That argument is not only unconstitutional, but also defies all rules of logic.
@kekem9295
@kekem9295 9 лет назад
+Kalman Bucy so it's unconstitutional and illogical for native Afrikaans speakers to have to learn in English but it's perfectly fine for native Xhosa speakers to have to learn in English? Xhosa is as much an official language in this country as much as Afrikaans is so why should Afrikaans speakers have the privilege to learn in their 1st language yet noone else is afforded that luxury? Let English be the equalizer then perhaps you won't get a university accounting lecturer who does not know the English equivalent of the word "bedraag".

+Frikkie Botes .. You put it very well.. you said "helping unqualified individuals into roles' I will stick to unqualified phrase.. this is exactly the debate. Whats happening in Stellenbosh is supporting the phrase "unqualified" in other words the Afrikaaners of Stellenbosh don't see or don't want black people to get quality education and be qualified to better serve the country! This isn't affecting blacks only, in fact its affecting whites more than blacks. A big number of blacks don't even know the South Africa's current economic status, they don't give a fuck because they are uneducated! You see Apartheid made it impossible for the black people to get education and now the blacks are in control with their uneducated minds, the best i would have thought the whites to do was to make sure that blacks gets quality education that is if you bloody whites still got minds with you. You are going to negatively benefit more in this shit. All the crime statistics you highlighted are mostly committed by uneducated black people but you still encouraging a thick line towards black education. The only thing that will make this country peaceful is to all come together and participate in educating the nation. I don't know how old you are but if this isnt done, more and more generations will suffer.

+Kile Wotshela, If I am a vegetarian, will I go eat at a steak house? So if you are English, Zulu, Xhosa etc, would you go study at a well known Afrikaans university? Sorry, but this is just ignorance. Nobody forced them to study there, the only thing this proofs is the arrogance of these students thinking they can go voluntary to an Afrikaans university and demand to have English classes. And if its not arrogance then it is a blatant on purpose decision to go and make trouble with the Afrikaner. Sorry I cannot see it any other way(Especialy since the one "victim" here clearly were part of the group of people who attacked the students at Elsenberg this past monday. He is visible on footage wielding a Sjambok and being antagonizing towards other white students.) In the army they used to reffer to this kind of behavior as "Verplaasing".

I remember when I studied at Stellenbosch in my first year - I was very naive about these matters. I didn't give it any thought as Afrikaans is my home language. As time went on, the language issue became more prominent, and I thought the same as many: _It's an Afrikaans university - go to UCT..blah etc_ . As I started speaking to friends I had made there who couldn't speak Afrikaans, I started to understand. Sure people like to reference places like Spain and loss of local languages and colonial this and that.. but in South Africa it's unrealistic to try and keep a university Afrikaans, as it gives a platform for the story's in this video to manifest.. it creates separation - which binds the ignorant together into groups that see 'others' as the enemy. We can try and stay naive and say 'it's a new South Africa' and 'things are different now', and though in many ways they are, there are still many layers of ignorance we need to work out of the systems. The terrible racism that still harms many is still real, and as long as there's a system that excludes some, even if you argue it's just on the academic level, it will filter through into the campus culture and take shape as narrow-minded racist idiots causing physical/emotional harm to others. The story of the lady being tapped on the head is so infuriating because you can see how he tries to justify his behaviour through ignorance - The typical 'Apartheid is over - move on - get over it man' attitude. He doesn't realize how he makes the other person feel. I'll end this rant with saying that not all Afrikaans people, or white people are this ignorant and horrible. I really hope Stellenbosch University ends this madness. Separation doesn't work in our country - we need inclusion.. bringing people together.. Cultures that try to stay pure will die out. They need to blend and evolve to survive. My two cents. Hopefully people read this in the intended spirit -- but I'm expecting angry trolls to reply too as per youtube.

This takes me back to 2004. A group of friends and I were going to an event on Campus At the University of the Free State from a commune we used to share two blocks away from the university in a suburb called Universitas. Part of our group walked a few steps ahead and behind them was Kuda, Lissa and I. As we were walking down the street a car came behind us, slowing down as it gets closer. The first thing that came to my mind was that maybe its people that are lost and need to get directions, so we stopped walking in order to offer our help. There were 4 white boys in the car, and being the oblivious child i was i genuinely thought they were stopping to be helped. One of them rolled down the window and said in Afrikaans "here are those Kaffers". They then got out of the car with hockey sticks and before they could attack us Kuda screamed at Lissa and I to run while he stayed and fought off the guys before he also started running. He stayed, so Lissa and I could get a chance to escape. I remember grabbing Lissa's hand and running down the road screaming to the others to run and get out of the way. We ended up jumping into peoples driveways and bushes just to get out of the road because now those guys had gotten into their car and were racing down the road towards us. That was the first time in the 18 years I had lived that I felt afraid for my life and had a face to face reality check with racism. Where I grew up it was just a word, and now i was in the middle of it, unprepared and somewhat alone. Till this day I can't imagine what my life would have been like if those guys actually got to carry out their ugly act of hurting me or Lissa or Kuda. Or if they got to do it to someone else that night. In fact later that night, One of the guys we lived with decided he was going to go out by himself and came back a few hours later bleeding and badly beaten, allegedly by 2 white guys, whether this was the work of the same guys or other guys roaming the streets for black kids, we did not know. What I do know is we were all shaken and scared by it, and none of what happened that night ever got reported to the police. Mainly because we all came to the conclusion that this would never go anywhere, we have no names, no number plates, no real identification of the perpetrators and there was a very strong message that white is previledged at that time. Needless to say I left the university at the end of that year to study in Johannesburg, but that event, though isolated, never left my mind and also formed much of the perspective of what i think about that place. Hearing the stories of these students just took me back, i almost feel like i'm back there, like at last someone knows how i was feeling or felt. Transformation is not going to come on its own, it needs all of us to stand together and put this out in the open. One day my daughter will be in university, far away from home. This cannot be the way she will be living. #Luister

Pieter Burger So you want to tell me that those experiences of students are not valid until and or unless white Afrikaans people get to tell their side of the story? Majaletje Mathume Fat people often say they feel invisible ( how ironic is that ) because normal people see 'through' them . This does not mean that there is a conspiracy by normal people to avoid fat people , most normal people just go on with their lives totally oblivious to fat peoples experiences how they are treated by normal people ... seems like the same goes for Blacks ...

Johannes S I understand where you are coming from. But trust me the thesis of whiteness in South Africa is hard to apply because it would disingenuous of white people to claim that they are not aware of their whiteness. Almost all of them are aware, but they opt for for willful ignorance. I speak from experience where I take a Race module in Sociology with someone who is even my friends's best friend but she still see me in weird ways.
@kalmanbucy6485
@kalmanbucy6485 9 лет назад
Majaletje Mathume Racism and mistreament of students due to their perceived race should not be tolerated. However, as far as Stellenbosch's language policy is concerned, there is nothing racist about it. Afrikaans-speaking people in South Africa have the constitutional right to learn in their native language and also have the right to preserve and promote Afrikaans as a language of science and culture. In order to that, there must be Afrikaans schools and Afrikaans universities. In a liberal democracy, the majority cannot simply erase a minority's culture or reduce that minority's language to a domestic dialect. That is as true for Afrikaans speakers in SA (white, coloured, or blacks), as it is for Catalonians, Basques, Quebécois and any other linguistic minority in the world.
@majaletjemathume4428
@majaletjemathume4428 9 лет назад
Kalman Bucy The language policy is as racist as anything can be as far as Stellenbosch University(SU) is concern. First of all SU's adoption of a language policy that privilege Afrikaans over anything result from its Apartheid roots which the institution is yet to let go. Secondly, the policy was drafted in a predominantly white Afrikaans heaven(white males council) based on an untransformed pool of of students and staff. Therefore, the data that informed the policy is contaminated which then can't be a sample for such a diverse country as South Africa. Thirdly, the Constitution of South Africa does not work in such a way that make rights absolute. Therefore access to education according to the constitution will be more important than a minority group's preference to learn in a language of their own. Moreover, even if the intentions of the policy was never to racially exclude any group it would still be found to constitute unfair discrimination since its effects are exclusionary. Do me a favor and read Section 9 of the Constitution on the Promotion of Equality and prevention of Unfair Discrimanation Act, Section 10 on Human Dignity, section 36 on Limitations of rights and more importantly also section 39 on interpretation of the Constitution.
@kalmanbucy6485
@kalmanbucy6485 9 лет назад
Majaletje Mathume The Constitutional Court ruled in the Mikro Primary case that the right to receive instruction in an official language of choice does not imply that any student can demand instruction in any language at any school. In fact, if that were the case, an Afrikaans-speaking student who goes to UCT should actually be able to demand separate instruction in Afrikaans, which is not the case. The Court also made it very clear that single-medium educational institutions are not prohibited by the constitution and that, on the contrary, the State is required to consider single-medium institutions as one possible alternative to fulfil the constitutional right of language choice. Unlike many Afrikaans primary or secundary schools though, Stellenbosch is NOT a single-medium institution, but rather an officially bilingual institution. The university is not denying anyone the right to education on the basis of language then. If anything, what is wrong is Stellenbosch's admission policy, which, reflecting the biilingual nature of the university, should require NSC passes in both English and Afrikaans (HL or FAL) at a minimum level, which is currently not the case.

The language policy at Stellenbosch is really just the very surface of a much deeper and more depressing issue. The majority of white people here do not identify as racists - and who would? Saying "hello, how are you?" every now and again to a person of a different race and never having said the "K-word" doesn't make you part of the transformation. White people need to come to terms with their micro-aggression and not be so scared of the "racist" label that they they go into fight or flight every time someone tries to discuss the issue. Sitting idly by and not making an active effort to include people of other cultures and races into your life is passive racism. I've always thought of myself as progressive and liberal and largely "unracist", but I realise every day more and more how much more I could be doing to solve some of these issues. It's just all very sad because the mindset which is causing this problem (which, let's just be frank and talk about it - is white afrikaans culture) is so heavily ingrained that it takes real effort to step outside of the comfort of blissful pseudo-ignorance and actually do something about it - effort which many white people, even though they don't identify as racist, are simply too lazy to make. There are obvious exceptions - not everybody who is white is racist. Not everybody who is afrikaans is racist. But for those who aren't the problem, or who don't see themselves as the problem, there is an equal if not greater responsibility and opportunity to effect change.

There are over 26 or so universities in South Africa,, only four of which still teach in Afrikaans. Furthermore, those 4 universities that use Afrikaans as a language of instruction now also offer tuition in English, often forcing the university to waste precious resources teaching the same material twice in separate English-medium and Afrikaans-medium classes, even though in some of their campi, 70 or 80 % of their students are Afrikaans-speaking. The rest of the world has to understand that has nothing to do with racism, but with the right to receive education in one's native language, in this case Afrikaans, as recognized by the South African constitution. .

Neither did they have any trouble to pass their exams. Maybe I surrounded myself with peers who aknowledged that getting a degree from a university that I can proudly say is internationally recognised and in the top 400 institutions globally, would require some hard graft and dedication. Why don't all the naysayers do some research and find out how many international students have successfully passed under and graduate degree courses at SU? Why doesn't everyone that keeps pulling this bullshit race card go and evaluate their own intelligence before ruining this wonderful university. Maybe, just maybe, it is you, not Afrikaans, that is the problem.

As a proud Cape Townian Coloured, that speaks Afrikaans and not the best of English, I'm willing to learn. I hate it when racism gets linked to a specific race. The reason I came here is, I wanted to receive my education in my mother tongue. What pissed me off most was when Kyle Thomas, the white lecturer in the luister video, asked the class if there are any coloureds from Delft, Manenburg, Khyalitsha, Michellsplain, ect. just assuming that that's where we came from, where I come from.. Which is already stereotypical if you'd ask me. Now, all of a sudden she's the one fighting to alleviate racism. I'm an Afrikaner, and I know that there are some very racist Afrikaners out there. BUT, just as there are racist Afrikaners, there are many more racist blacks in South Africans. (just switch on the news, watch the EFF, genocide etc, you get the picture). Racism isn't a black or white thing, it's a problem amongst individuals, and generalizing an entire Afrikaner nation for being racist as this documentary does, is just plain subjective and wrong.

+Phillip Holland Well Philip from Holland. Here's a true fact for you, Afrikaners didn't kill the San people. Dutch did. During the first, second and third Khoikhoi-Dutch war between 1659 and 1674. Those wars were between the natives and Dutch settlers fought under a dutch flag and dutch language. The Afrikaner nation and language wasn't even born yet. Our nation was born when the Dutch abandoned their own country men in South Africa after the British decided they too want a piece of the pie (South Africa). Besides, I was born in South Africa, but grew up in Namibia, there are many San people there. In their primitive and native state, they're some of the best, most peaceful and loving nationalities you'll ever meet. So you tell, why did the Dutchmen kill them like animals as you blatantly put it? The rest of your statements are ignorant and self fabricated, so not even going to argue with you over that. This video sickens me so much. Im portuguese but I lived in SA for about 5 years. And I know Stellenbosch quite well, as ive been there a few times. This video doesnt come as a surprise. I remember hating Stellenbosch afrikanners coz they have such a hard time accepting other peoples cultures. They dont only have an issue with black culture, they have an issue with every single culture in the world that is not theirs. I remember seeing one afrikaner girl throwing a huge tantrum, and crying, just because I had a mohawk as a hairstyle with two lines on the side of my head. She literally went off. They're crazy man. I've get sad whenever I see racist situations in South Africa( and its ever increasing) and to me, the government policies are the main cause for this ongoing racist issues. However I too blame white afrikaaner families, who dont make the slightest effort to grow past their pre-apartheid mindset, and grow as a culture and contribute to a better South Africa. Finally,on the issue of language, their argument is utter bullshit. Its so damn disgusting. Im studying in Portugal, and even though portuguese is the 4th most widely spoken language in the world, there are some subjects that we are forced to take in English. Why? Because in an ever increasing globalized world, English is a must-have tool if you want to succeed in a globalized economy. Now who the hell speaks afrikaans outside of South Africa? Being taught in Afrikaans actually prevents the students from being better prepared for a globalized economy. So yeah, by trying to impose their culture on others, they're actually negatively affecting their "own" students. Afrikaans people are stuck in the 19th century. thats the only truth

My nine year old recently told me that she wanted to be white, when I asked her why she said that her fellow white classmates never get into trouble and get away with so much. I told her to be proud of who she is and not to let teachers and fellow students dictate to her who she must be. In fact I told her to be a South African in everything she does and to look past colour. The apartheid struggle has come and gone but now we are in the transformation struggle and there seems to be no solution in the near future...

My experience language-wise in Stellenbosch so far has been nothing but good. In the beginning of the year when I moved into res, I tried to speak to the Afrikaans girls in their own language even though my Afrikaans is not very good at all. They were very kind to me and said that if it makes me feel better, they will speak to me in English. When I speak to the cleaning ladies in my res or the ladies who work in the Deli I speak to them in Xhosa. Now, although my Xhosa is quite basic, they still respond happily to me and I can see that they are glad that I'm just showing them that I am trying to make an effort. What I'm basically saying is that you don't have to be completely fluent in another language for a person to see that you respect them, their culture and the language that they speak. All it takes is a bit of effort from everyone to learn a bit about another culture. If we do that, we will be able to get along better. In the words of Nelson Mandela, "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." This is something I firmly believe in and is something I try to live by. It just makes me sad to see that so many people are upset and made to feel excluded here. No one should have to apologise for being born the way they are (whether they are black, white, coloured etc). Instead they should try learn and understand another language, it will only benefit them and enrich their lives and in doing so everyone will be able to appreciate the amazing diversity that you could only find in our beautiful country!

Those of us who grew up in the Apartheid days, should truly do introspection and make sure that we teach our children the good values of a non racist community. It seriously starts with every individual to make an intrinsic mind-shift from racism towards colorless humanism. I have a daughter at Maties, and would feel immense inner pain if my child is mistreated by anyone who have racial attitudes towards others as I have taught her to accept anyone for who they are, respect others despite their skin color, respect the beliefs of others. We as parents who are the first and most important role models to our children should make this a lifelong vital part of our parenthood to our kids. Please you are our future leaders of this beautiful Rainbow Nation. Play your part, but play it well!

Sad to see all the Old South Africa racist attitudes so openly on display here. The “feeling of superiority” that goes with racism is actually founded on a deep insecurity, the fear of competing on equal terms. Back when I was in high school, it seemed to me a rather obvious logical contradiction that black people were regarded as inferior and therefore were given inferior opportunities. If everyone was give the same chance, wouldn’t those less capable naturally lose out? For voicing this sort of view, my classmates called me a “communist”, which was a bit of a laugh, since noone of them actually knew what that meant… The real beneficiaries of racism are white people who are not confident of their ability and need to be protected from fair competition. The apartheid system coddled this group and now they are left high and dry, they are unhappy. The solution is for everyone to accept that in a fair society, no one is owed a position - you have to deserve it. I don’t want to benefit from unfair competition. I want to live in a genuinely free society with progressive values. Much of what the current government is supposedly doing in this direction is failing - but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done right. We certainly can’t fix the ANC’s blunders by going back to apartheid.

Indeed, protecting white privilege is becoming more and more absurd. However, the producers here are mixing two issues and are dismally failing at it. The issue of racist losers about Stellenbosch students, who are not many, but unfortunately make others' lives miserable, is one thing. The issue of Afrikaans is entirely another. Which English fools enrol in a Zulu institution and then proceed to disrupt classes because they don't understand the lectures? Likewise, enrolling in undergraduate studies at Stellenbosch will involve Afrikaans lectures. If that doesn't suit a person, let him go elsewhere. With that I'm not saying that there may not be a process to change that, but the people complaining in the video knew full-well what they were getting into, so the Open Stellenbosch crowd is disingenuous to say the least when they say that this is due to racism as it's simply not the case. Back to the alleged racist: I live in Stellenbosch. I also studied here. The types that are present in some residences have annoyed me endlessly since I was a student. They're not racist per se. They're simply so dense and fearful that they have to bully, strong-arm and act condescendingly toward any stranger. I know from experience and I'm not black. They're weak, insecure and terrified of the future and that drives their behaviour. Are there issues in Stellenbosch? Yes, of course there are. Is Open Stellenbosch making a good point? I'm afraid not.

@Roland Giesler, my question to you is, how many students are currently enrolled at Stellenbosch and what proportion of that number are Afrikaans speaking? If the answer is less than 40%, how then does that warrant most instruction in Afrikaans? The university may have been developed for Afrikaans speaking students initially but times have changed and more South African kids are applying for enrolment into universities than the universities can accommodate. Hence the increasing numbers of non Afrikaans speaking students at institutions like Stellenbosch. Surely the university must now change to match that demographic shift and that should include the staff compliment too..

Johannes S Done correctly, yes. The ANC is however not doing it well. What would you do after decades of a totally unlevel playing field including massively discrimatory education? So literally the only source of studying material the afrikaans students in my class have is the slides which are basic, inadequate summaries. Henry v Zyl no, you are missing it. All people have always asked for is entire parallel classes in English and Afrikaans. So you that we both don't suffer while trying to learn. That's it. It's only that it is majority blacks that have spoken out about their issue with policy and most Afrikaans people, by not speaking out, clearly do not have a problem. If you have an issue with the way the policy is set up then you must speak out. Advocate for your parallel class in Afrikaans and not have to suffer through the T-option or an English choosing by the class the way I do when my class is in Afrikaans. Simple. Also, it not "our" english. Unless you are white English or natively from England, english is not your mother tongue. English is not my mother tongue. But news flash, we all learnt it. Why? Because it unfortunately is the widest official language in the whole world! A common medium in which all people can possibly communicate to one another in all spheres. So why must Afrikaans people be special? Which is why most people argue that Stellenbosch teaching in Afrikaans is perpetuating post-colonial and exclusionary tendencies, because no other South African university situated in the other regions teaches in the home languages of the people predominant in those regions, except maybe UP, which is also Afrikaans. You get my point? We are not asking for you to stop speaking Afrikaans or to wipe it out. we just ask that since this university opened its doors to all people; black, english white, Asian, colored, internationals (like myself), please teach them in a language that they can fully understand, which in this case is, English. We can enjoy the Afrikaans culture and language without it being imposed on us. This place is beautiful and the people here are as well. I would love to learn Afrikaans on a personal basis and to enjoy the culture the people have to offer. But it is hard to do that when someone is shoving it down your throat instead of letting you want it.

Wow that was impressively over-analysed and misinterpreted. When I typed "their English" I was only referring to the Afrikaans students' fluency in English. I share the sentiments of language equality and a heavy stance against discrimination in any form. The manner in which this message is conveyed on campus however doesn't resonate with most -because people perceive the demonstrations as abrasive populism (including many non-Afrikaans/ non-white students if you might regard that as a factor). Rather than this being a successful movement of love and mutual understanding it has deteriorated into a social cesspool of accusations, demands, racism and general ignorance (from all invested parties). Even if these efforts are fruitful and the demands are met, it will leave a resenting conscience due to the manner in which it was attained. You may say "this is the only way" and you might be right, but that would truly be a shame.
@chapattiaddict

Henry v Zyl I get what you said when you mentioned "their english". And I also still wanted to make my point about the english not being ours either. Maybe to state my point in a more clear manner, Afrikaans students can/should adapt, and why not? We all did. I agree that some of the methods used by this movement to advocate for a language equality and put a voice across have been deconstructive, but at least they are saying and doing something about it. They noticed. If you also noticed that there is a problem with the system, the way people of color are treated on this campus or the language policy, what did you do about it? What have white Afrikaans people done to make the situation better for everyone? We are quick to criticize which wouldn't be a bad thing if only we were putting solutions to this problem on table as well.

This documentary makes me so sad, dispirited and angry. The racism is horrible. But it is being used as a cover for the removal of an African language from a South African university. This is not a documentary only about "people of colour" (A US term totally used out of place and context). There are thousands of Stellenbosch students that are not white and speak Afrikaans as their mother tongue. South Africa is again going against the grain. Where in Spain and Scotland people are campaigning for local languages and independence, South Africa practises language imperialism - and then uses a European language for it - on top of that. How many South African universities have switched to English? How many still teach in a local language? How many people in the area around this university speak Afrikaans? What kind of a message are you sending to Afrikaans speakers? They are not welcome in South Africa unless they speak the language of colonisers, of global neo-liberalism and cultural imperialism? The racism must be adressed as a matter of urgency by the University authorities, and one way of helping to do that, is if everybody spoke Afrikaans.

Wessel van Rensburg Regional arguments are pretty out of line given that we are only regionally separated as a result of apartheid. Also stop hiding behind coloured people because the institutional culture and racism of Stellenbosch hurt them the most as well. Moreover black people are not English mother tongue speakers but they never interpret being taught in English as a message of saying"we are not welcome unless we speak the language of the colonisers". Lastly, stop trying to claim victimhood, white Afrikaans people are the ones perpetuating the evil of racism, they can't also be victims at the same time. Actually your arguments(if they are at all) are ridiculous.

Also, to add my 2 cents, I understand your point regarding Afr being the most spoken language in SA, however, do you not think that it would be unfair for certain people with home language's such as Sepedi or SeSotho, who made the effort of learning English to be able to be educated, to learn ANOTHER language for the sake of the academics. Also, like the guys said in the video, academic Afrikaans is INCREDIBLY different to conversational Afrikaans :/

Wow, it's so sad the racism these students are facing especially at an educational institution. I'm glad this video is exposing what's going on at this school to the rest of the world. So far a lot of western media outlets have made this video viral throughout the UK, Europe and America so props for the bravery in creating this. Even if Stellenbosch U is a historically Afrikaans university it doesn't mean it's okay to treat other students/human beings this way at ALL. You wouldn't find this at Harvard, or Yale etc (although they have their own problems). I feel SA universities need to start acknowledging how racisms affects students ability to learn and grow.

On the Stellenbosch Crisis: Can I share my story? When I was little, I didn't go to a German school. Why, you may ask! BECAUSE I DON'T SPEAK GERMAN, I WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND MY TEACHER. Forcing people to mix is just as bad as forcing them to be apart. Forced inclusivity is just as evil as apartheid. The country would be better served if at least one university was dedicated to each official language. People can then choose where they will understand instruction and if you make an idiotic choice to study at an institution where you don'n understand the language of instruction guess who is the idiot; You! If language is the basis of being labelled a racist, humanity should cut out their tongues and live a silent existence. Complete and utter silence is the only way in which you can be sure that you are not a racist. Oh, and that incidentally means that thoughts should also be illegal. You could be thinking thoughts in a racist language... If speech and thought is both outlawed we are nothing but broccoli sprouts; ripe and ready to be devoured by whom ever shall choose. If so, I nominate that we exterminate you first seeing as you differ in opinion to me! It is sad that the generation claiming to be the most tolerant ever to have lived is also the most hateful in their bigotry. (Yes that means you: #OpenStellenbosh) #languageisnotacrime

That's exactly what i faced at Stellenbosch University 7 years ago. Its sad this is still going on to this day. They even had/have a program called GESOG used to attract black students to the institution. I stayed at Meerhof residence and the racism was insidious. They had meetings in Afrikaans just to spite the black students. There was particularly a Dr Bawoodien who was employed to 'look after' the black students. Basically all she did was to be sarcastic and arrogant about the true problems we black students faced. I remember in my first year they forced us to attend Afrikaans classes after a whole day of classes. Medical school is tough let alone if its in a new language that you have to learn. Funny they prescribed English textbooks and when you asked the lecturers questions they would insist on answering in Afrikaans. During ward rounds the doctors and consultants spoke in Afrikaans. We stood there watching our childhood dreams of being doctors turn into nightmares. Will never forget one Dr Bradankamp,though late, that man was evil. He told us that he did not want 'us' at stellenbosch. This was said among black students who had complained about the Afrikaans classes. To think they made us sing nursery rhymes. In the cafeteria white students who leave a table if a black student occupied an empty seat. It was just terrible being there.

+Adam de waal such an ignorant point to push "why didn't they go elsewhere" it's like saying why do white speaking people attend NMMU when it's predominantly black. Wanna know why people still go to NMMU? Because WE at NMMU are able to compromise fully. Language barriers isn't even an issue. This thing of being taught in a language you don't know just because an area is mostly occupied by people speaking this unknown language is not only ignorant but is clearly slowing down transformation. All scenarios mentioned in this video are utterly ridiculous. I had no idea things are so bad at Stellenbosch
@adamdewaal340
@adamdewaal340 9 лет назад
It's not an ignorant point but one based one empirical evidence and decision making abilities. And this video is a good example of a minority speaking for a majority. I completely agree that thses incidents are disgusting and should be investigated but is also a very one sided video. Not defending racists referenced in the video but defending the white people who are grouped together and ironically labelled as racist for being white afrikaans.
@akhonazweni6669
@akhonazweni6669 9 лет назад
Adam de waal see that's where you're confused. This video is referring to the white people who display racism towards non - Afrikaans speaking people. So your defense is basically invalid. And adding to that weak defense "why didn't they go elsewhere" kills your defense flat. I'm done.
@chadjohnson7699
@chadjohnson7699 9 лет назад
+Adam de waal The fact that I'm dignifying your question with an answer is ridiculous, but I'll entertain you for other ignorant(I say ignorant because you seem to be quite eloquent) people who might ask the same question. There could be many reasons why people who don't speak Afrikaans would consider going to Stellenbosch, one of these being convenience, I know I wanted to attend Stellenbosch because it was closer to home and it would be easier for me to commute there, than from any other institution. another reason someone might prefer Stellenbosch is the fact that not ALL tertiary institutions offer the same courses, what Stellenbosch offers might be more appealing to a specific individual and why should anybody be forced to compromise their education because of recurring cycles of racism. Then there's also the fact that Stellenbosch might have offered bursaries to people who couldn't get a bursary at another institution and couldn't afford another institution without the funding.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the language of Afrikaans! But culturally the way it is presented reflects on a culture that seeks to eliminate all others, so Afrikaans reigns supreme. It is unfortunate that the world seems to be linked to one language which is English, and that all languages are measured against polarity with that locally. Some people take advantage of the fact that they have access to institutions that enable learning. Nowhere is it enshrined that Afrikaans as a South African language should be abolished. It is through intellectual entitlement that it has be perceived that Afrikaans and subsequently Afrikaners are being castaway from the country...

All multilingual countries have separate single-medium schools and universities. For example, in Canada, there are English-speaking universities and French-speaking universities, as in Belgium there are French-speaking universities and Dutch-speaking universities. Why does South Africa alone insist on this unreasonable and inefficient policy of dual-medium schools where any minority of students (sometimes less than 10 % of the student body) can demand separate, special instruction in their language of choice ? I say: honour the constitutional right of choice by building enough single-medium schools/universities to cater for all language communities (including native African language speakers), rather than forcing English on everybody.

I remember when my class teacher asked the class in my matric "how many of you applied in S U" the answer was none. In my second year physics course at UCT I met three black student, who did their first year at S U and left. I always knew something is serious wrong with that university. I strongly support the open Stellenbosch . South Africa is diverse country that means institutions must reflect that. We cannot have institutions that use culture to disadvantages other groups. I know my voice will not reach a lot of people, I grew up in the end days of apartheid - My dad told me to never step on other people because of there culture or language. He told me to protect my language ( that is Afrikaans ), but to also respect the fact that not everyone in South Africa can speak Afrikaans and for that matter English. For a lot aparheid ended way before President Mandela made the announcement, in fact President F W de Klerk started the process of ending it in 1980 ( I was not jet Born ). The apartheid structure came from Stellenbosch, no wonder it is so hard to eliminate that culture from the place where it was born. I'm a white South African, the Afrikaaner has long past away. The students that has a racial heart should con-ceder change. It's not gonna help you outside Stellenbosch , you'll be unhappy the rest of your life. P.S : Please don't take offence when those ROCK SPIDERS ( White Afrikaaner ) calls you "kaffir". It's actualy spelled "käfer" in German it means "Beetle". You can pull the negative out of what a beetle does, but the beetle has a strong shell, it can work hard and not get tired and it will fight predators to protect itself and family. Luister - This documentary about racism is no surprise at all. I visited Stellenbosch in 2009 and went to the town centre and felt extremely uncomfortable. When you walk in to a bar and all the people there are white and everything comes to a standstill you know there is an issue with your presence as a black person. The only black persons I saw in town were beggars in the street and attendants at the car park. South Africa with the end of Apartheid is still a very sad place for Black people. There are similar undertones of racism in Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, Cape Town, Sandton just to mention a few more places I have visited in SA. And this is 2015

Surfergirl J I get that it must suck being discriminated against because of your colour, however, it needs to be realised that that is exactly what Affirmative Action is. Fair discrimination basically (Maybe read the law books to better understand its ?). The reason that there is such a thing is because of a little demon called apartheid. It created MASSIVE gaps between the races economically and for a lot of people of colour, that poverty or lower standard of living remains. It is for that reason that at least the descendants of POC are now able to go to institutions such as US. Also my coloured girlfriend received hella good marks and fully deserved her bursary. Don't discredit students of colour who recieved bursaries.

I think certain individuals still have a long way to go in terms of growth, growth in a sense of acceptance... and so many more.
