Watch my product look and unboxing of the Luiton LT-898UV FM Dual Band transceiver. The radio is part of the new generation of mobile/base radios coming from China. Also sold under the Leixen and Jetstream labels. This particular model has 10 watts of transmit power and 199 memory channels. Future videos will highlight this radio as part of my project to build a mobile go-kit in a plastic 30 caliber ammo can.

I think you are absolutely right about most Go Kits having way to much stuff. Meters, speakers, 12v panels, a second radio, solar panel charger, psu, antenna tuner. What you did in your Go Box video is bringing it back to BASICS.

I have one of the Lexien rigs, build a solar ammo can box for it as well (Should be back in my older videos) I love the radio, its got more than enough power for use and with a decent antenna, it really gets out. I used Chirp to program mine, the software that comes with it stinks. Also these are bit more easy to program manually as well. Great radio for the money!

Thanks for the comments. I took a look at your videos, they're very nice. So far the little radio is working well for me, but I know that living in an area with a good repeater system, 10 watts will take you far. I'll be taking part in a couple of amateur radio events over the next two weekends, so I'll be better able to put it through its paces.

At 2:36, I love the way this guy trivializes the difference between 10 and 50 watts. That's *_7db_* fella. Over two S-units. Quadruple the signal. The difference between *_DFQ_* and not even opening the squelch! That's pretty damn significant if you ask me.
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas 4 года назад
7db is quadruple the signal but only a difference of one S unit. For most circumstances the difference won't be noticeable‚ but if you are in a fringe area and have a weak signal to begin with- then it could be an issue.

How long do these last before we need to upgrade them?

I'm glad to help. I'm working on the second video that shows my go-box and gives a review of the performance of the radio. It should be ready by the end of the week.

I have programmed my radio using Chirp, but when I try to access stored memory locations above 068, I am not able to. Any ideas ?

great video... I really enjoy playing with these dual band minis. I'm currently using and abusing a QYT KT8900 and it's doing great thus far... you said the 898 is basically a handheld unit inside and I guess that makes a lot of sense now to me with how they make these so cheap... how's it holding up for you? I'm eager to find out how that unit holds up to a lot of use. I installed a cooling fan on my kt8900 as it Cooks in the summer heat in my black car with black leather interior and so far 6 months and not a hitch....

If you open up the radio, you'll see that the circuit board the components are mounted on are tiny. The form factor looks very similar to what you'd find in an HT. But there is one advantage: the aluminum case does a good job as a heat sink. I've used this radio for extended periods of time ~30 minutes, and it didn't appear to overheat. So far I've been satisfied with it.

10 watts should be fine for most things. But once out in the middle of the Nevada desert, I had to use 75 watts on my Yaesu FT2900R and could still barely get into the repeater. Fortunately I was able to get through, because my car had broken down, and my cell phone didn't work. I agree you should not use more power than necessary, that's in the FCC rules. But I still want a radio that will put out a lot of power, because there are situations where you may need it.

Hey Michael, I have been wondering about these tiny rigs. Would you say anything about their mobile performance? We`ll be staying tuned for more. Thanks Joe
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas 8 лет назад
I've used it briefly connected to the base antenna with good signal reports. It does have nice loud audio output, so I can see it being a decent mobile rig. Once I get it mounted in the box I'll take it out in the car for a road test and publish the results.

Do you know what the mAh draw is when listening to active chatter with volume at a reasonable listening level? I'd like to calculate battery run time per Ah when there is lots of talking as there might be in a disaster. Thanks.
@KB9VBRAntennas

According to the specs, the radio consumes 78mA on standby and 1.8 amp when it transmits on high power. It seems to last 10 hours or more with light use on my 8 amp hour battery. I'll charge up the battery and leave it tuned to the weather channel to see how long the battery lasts.

I got that radio. When I press the PTT key. The red and green lights are on in same time. It should only be red.And green when it is "receiving signal". Is it a failure?
@marinmarin7697
@marinmarin7697 7 лет назад
I know what it is all about. When it is at LOW power. Then they light together red and green. And when HIG power, then it lights only red when PTT is pressed.
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas 7 лет назад
You are correct. I did some research and it appears that the red/green light combination does come on during low power transmit.

Hi, Michael, I had purchased this radio about a year ago, I have had very few occasions to use the thing after struggling with the Chirp. I finally got it programmed with all of the repeater settings. Even figured out how to program it without Chirp. My problem now is, while it receives, it will no longer transmit. I attempted a reset and that did not seem to do any good. It is hooked up to an existing 2 meter antenna with proper coax into the shack. I even purchased another microphone. Do you have any suggestions? I have a post on QRZ forum, and have not gotten any help there as yet. Thanks, KC3BXZ Joe

Does the transmit light come on but no power out when you key the microphone? Then it may be a component failure in the radio. Otherwise there is a feature called 'Stun' that may have been activated. This can inhibit the transmit. I'm going to refer you to the Miklor.com site which has a great FAQ on the Leixen radios. This may answer your question: www.miklor.com/VV898/VV-FAQ.php

When I key up, the red xmit light comes on. I am normally able to hit all the repeaters around me, locally, with only my HT, at 4 watts out. The Luton is at 10 watts. Thanks, Michael, will check it out and let you know what happens..

I tried the website you mentioned. A couple of items in the FAQ section seemed to apply, unfortunately, I do not have the expertise in neither `puter geek-ism, nor an understanding of electronics to do anything myself. I will shelve it, for now. Maybe I can ask somebody in my club, whether they can look at the thing. Thanks. Joe

That may not be a bad idea. If someone has a power meter you may be able to check for proper output.

Although only FCC type accepted for the amateur radio band, it will transmit/receive between 136-174 Mhz and 400-470 Mhz.

How is the inter mod? AS Bad as Baofeng. cant expect too much for the price.
@KB9VBRAntennas
@KB9VBRAntennas 7 лет назад
Selectivity is about the same as the Baofeng, maybe slightly better. But this radio is built on the same platform as the handhelds, and really doesn't have the same amount of front-end filtering that you might find on a higher-end mobile radio. If you are in an urban area I would certainly run it with Tone receive.

Not much intermod on UHF, VHF can be quite open. There are squelch adjustments via the computer software.

This is the worst radio I have ever owned. It is pure crap. My radio stopped Tx'ing after one week. Threw it straight into the trash. Garbage.
