What JJ explained is still allowed, but what he explained wasn't 90s handchecking. You didn't have to take the hand off back then and thats the key. Don't misunderstand me, I don't think it would bother Luka at all. The way 90s guards countered the handcheck was to play with their back to the basket 25 feet out...Luka does that today because its just his game. So I think Luka would likely feel right at home with 90s handchecking.

Luka is just playing what’s in front of him. He said it himself - something like “if they want me to go left, I go left. If they want me to go right, I go right”. I don’t think there’s too much that’s premeditated. I don’t think you have TIME to do that much thinking on the floor - even playing at Luka speed. And with the defence constantly trying to throw different things at you, you can’t be too premeditated. Same with the slow step. He can’t do that EVERY time. He’s just FEELING what will work in any situation and he’s good enough to have so many options can choose from and make the shot, regardless.

Offensive players today have a ton of talent. But let’s not confused gimmicky skills for talent. Players have learned to foul hunt like no other and it’s based on gimmicks like rip throughs, and barreling into defenders while flailing, landing on the ground, or flipping your head back to exaggerate contact.
@gumballwaterson1957

Uh, abuse the hand checking rule for easy calls? The whole point is the hand checking meant refs didn't make calls. If the level was "too great", then NBA players would be scoring way more than their predecessors in FIBA (which is more similar to the older NBA). Luka is so insanely skilled and has such high basketball iq and at the same time he is atleast not traditionally athletic. That makes it seem like his defenders are not trying everything to stop him from scoring. He is by far the most double teamed player in the nba but still avg 35ppg on 62%ts which is insane. Dude is the MVP avg:35p 9a 9r on 62%ts. He is by far the best player this season now that embiid is out (65g rule)

I feel like that slow step/deceleration was an evolution to his game brought about by playing so many competitive games. Remember, he's only 16 when he played for Madrid. His physique is not yet fully developed and had to work his way against faster fully-developed grown men. He had to think of a way to drive to the basket with the mismatch on physicality. One more thing is that it It's true, you can't really recreate the actual defense on practice that's why he said he didn't practiced it. The deceleration really depends on the defense. If the defender didn't jump you could see Luka would plant both his feet and pass the ball instead of forcing the shot. Unlike the crossover which you kinda bait the defender, the deceleration is really more of a gamble.

Taking away the Def3 would ruin the game. If you don’t believe me, look back in the 60s & 70s when you were allowed to station someone in the paint with no negative impact on your defense. It made sense without the 3PT line. You add that to the equation and you can’t really do that without getting burnt in the long run.

@gumballwaterson1957
@gumballwaterson1957 4 месяца назад
@@prestoCreams No, cause NBA offenses now are based on drive and kick. A big man camping in the paint does a pretty good job of stopping the first part of the strategy. I don't get saying scoring would be easier. NBA players almost unanimously say it would be harder to score, the NBA itself changed the rule to make it easier to score, the coaches, GMs, refs, and commentators ALL say rules like the 3s made it harder to score, and Luka has said it TWICE. What secret knowledge do you have that they don't?
@newrecruit100
@newrecruit100 4 месяца назад
@@gumballwaterson1957he’s comparing it to FIBA rules not 90s/00s rules though. Defensive 3 seconds was introduced in early 00s and teams still struggled to score lol. I think with the 5 out spacing that it’s much less effective.
@gumballwaterson1957
@gumballwaterson1957 4 месяца назад
@@newrecruit100 There's a lot of things going on with NBA scoring, but let's just look at FIBA. The NBA has been OPENLY changing rules to increase scoring, and it's stupid to argue with the guys who make their own rules that their own rules didn't make scoring easier when that's exactly what they wanted. The US team just played in a FIBA tournament less than a year ago. If 5 out was a more effective strategy for scoring, then the US team's scoring should be better than the past, i.e. they should be scoring more than their predecessors. They're not. There is no consistent upward trend for team USA's scoring, and just looking at the data any excuse you try to make won't be consistent. The most consistent answer aligns with literally what the league, players, coaches, GMs, and fans who've watched the game for a long time say: NBA rules make it easier to score when they take away physicality and 3s. FIBA play just adds evidence that it's moreso the rules than the players abilities since FIBA hasn't had as many drastic offense related rule changes/interpretations as the NBA.

JJ takes things out of context a lot. The thing with hand checking is, it wasn’t just the elimination of it in the rules, it also was to eliminate physical defense and allow more freedom of movement in general for the offensive player. The hand checking rule is not only about being able to hand check, it’s a rule that has changed the game entirely over the years due to overall changes in how the game is officiated.
@cookiesforlunch

@@user-pq4dq6bj2u right but my point is he used a different definition than what someone like Gary Payton or Michael Jordan would say hand checking is. And he based that it was still happening on his own definition and skills, not theirs. My argument is that not everyone was a master at hand checking, so his definition doesn't cover what those aforementioned players were doing. And that players nowadays aren't still doing it/allowed to do it, at least at the same level and skill that a guy like Gary Payton or like a Ron Artest did. I do think to some extent guys do some light hand checking still that point is true.

@@back2back379 agreed but I think the point now is they may have taken it to far when multiple rules got stacked, like Luka mentioned the 3 second defense rule. Defense is historically bad and just this past week we had two 50 point quarters, the Kobe 81 anniversary week we had what 6 or 7 players go for 60 plus like it was easy, and I can almost guarantee at this pace we'll see a 200 point game.

Easy to be more talented when you're allowed to carryover, travel, lift your pivot foot, as well as rule changes like no hand checking, freedom of movement, gather step, etc. The game has been changed so much to allow offense to be what it is today, It's not because of "no defense", it's because the league made it this way... God i can only imagine how good players like MJ and Kobe would have been if they were allowed to do what players can today, it's actually a joke.

The thing with 1980's hand checking it really only works in the paint for players that use their back- while dribbling backing up. Hand checking for 'strong' defenders works... because if they put their elbow on your back as the dribbler' is backing up ...he cannot back up that stronger defender... the elbow force on offensive players back alters what the offensive player has to do. When the offensive player is stronger than the defender with the hand checking or elbow on the back... the offensive player can still back up the defender. But yes hand checking did make it harder to score. Because offensive player had to be a really good dribbler' great handles... to deal with defense like that.

JJ's take on hand checking helps me understand why he thinks MJ and Bird were playing against plumbers. Hand checking wasn't prevalent for driving offensive players. It was for top of the key. 3 point shooting was WAY harder bc of hand checking and that's why the best shooters in the 90s and 80s were 6"6+ outside of a VERY select few. Luka will still be good I THINK, but those hand checks at the top are hard Imagine getting jabbed in the body right before you decide to shoot, nobody is prepared for that and foul isn't going be called
