Lukla Nepal, The Most Dangerous Airport in the World?

Is the Lukla Airport the most dangerous in the world? The runway is only be 500 meters long, and there's no fancy radar to help planes land...but this airport beautiful! If you're planning on doing any trekking in the Everest region, there's a good chance you'll be flying into Lukla. Don't worry, embrace the beauty of it. *Pro tip, sit on the left side flying into Lukla, and the right side flying out, the views of the Himalayas are incredible!

So interesting. I flew out of Lukla in 1982, and still remember that thrilling take off. Lukla was very small back then. So it was amazing to see the difference. In 1982, we hiked all the way up to Lukla from the road, then onto Everest basecamp. It was a trip of a lifetime for sure.

Only bodybuilders should be allowed to mountaineer. I don't want to see non striated glutes climbing. We need a UN resolution about this.

Hi Ryan, just have to say, you accomplished really something cool with this channel. I came across it by a chance, as I'm watching a lot of videos on the Cho La Pass recently, as we start our track in couple of weeks. Have to say one thing - the whole series of your trek are the best videos on Nepal Trekking I've seen! Thanks for those! Keeping fingers crossed you'll get your travel TV show finally.

In 1982 I hiked 10 days in from Lamasungu after the bus ride from Kathmandu, but decided to fly out of Lukla to get back to Kathmandu. Had enough hiking after another two week trek to Kala Patar and Base Camp. The runway was an unpaved yak pasture. They sounded an alarm as the plane approached and the herders drove the yaks off the runway. Often times the ground was too muddy from melted snow or rain to land or take off. The airport was sometimes closed for days or even weeks. Trekkers had to hike out during these times. It took about 10 days or so of difficult hiking to get to Kathmandu, but if you had a flight out of the country on a certain date, you had no choice.

I really enjoyed the video. I appreciate being able to experience something as cool as what you did with out actually having gone. I flew to Australia and in Japan the toilet’s looked the same way?. I waited for the airplane bathroom. Keep on living the dream and live it up.

I was in India on business at the end of Oct ‘17 and looking for an interesting adventure. After seeing this video several times, I traveled to Kathmandu where I hopped on a tiny plane and flew to Lukla. Took a helicopter flight up by Everest, spent a night in Lukla, then flew back to Kathmandu the next day. Great video - really captures the essence of the place! And luckily I avoided the men’s room, even though I had my own roll in my backpack. As Ryan says at the end - “I love you Nepal”...

Thank you for all these videos - It made me want to go to Nepal so bad. The LonelyPlanet and TrailBlazer books are now on my bedside table - Planning my solo trek for november 2017, either the 3 passes, or the annapurna trek. Can't wait to see more content from your channel !

Great! You are gonna LOVE Nepal, I've done Annapurna too, it's pretty awesome. Here's some vids from that trek, ru-vid.com/group/PL11ABDFAC51C1E172 Let me know if you have any questions.
@senasplage
@senasplage 7 лет назад
I watched them too (I kinda watched your entire channel last weekend) I can't really decide yet - The "new" road in the Annapurna is what makes me lean more towards the 3 passes, but at the same time I know there are loads of trekkers in november doing the Everest Base Camp and the 3 passes. Unless there is another cool trek that can be done solo, with tea houses, and good signs.
@duzer

@Ryan: No-one in Nepal apparently. In that respect Nepal and its people are like in India, except in the mountains. The other side of Everest (Tibet) is completely different though - much stricter about Everest permits, safety, guides etc. .... and hygeine too. Lukla is geographically spectacular though, and the flight to Kathmandu was too.

I took at least three showers on my trek to and from Everest base camp. Mostly freezing cold water, and one in a shower cubicle with an open side facing across the valley. A shower with a real view. Some places have showers with solar heaters, but you had better be one of the first two or three users or else it's mountain stream temperature (but still not as cold as the showers in the lodge at the top of Cerro Chirripó in Costa Rica).
