A quick, cohesive explanation of lumbar radiculopathy for Step 1.
In this video we discuss the anatomy associated with radiculopathy. We cover the main causes of radiculopathy including a herniated disc and spinal stenosis as well as how to distinguish the two. We also cover the clinical features of radiculopathy and dive into how the dermatomes, myotomes, and clinical reflexes are affected. Enjoy!

Ok. . . reaching out because I have a friend with this but it got worse from bad surgery. Question... Couldn't the surgeon put a protective flexible tubing around the nerve to prevent the pain and more from any swelling? I have a flex tube for all my wires for my computer and desk area. It's the same idea. Reverse stint...

I have this. In addition to healing from hand surgery, and recovering from a broken leg, all at the same time.

i thought that when the intervertebral disc herniates it would most likely compress the spinal nerve below. So if it was a herniation of the L3-L4 then it would compress the L5 spinal nerve. Sorry i am just a little confused.

Hi even I have muscle twitching in my abdominals, back, near ribs, hip, thighs. Stay strong . There is a treatment for everything. Even I am looking up my symptoms.

Also, have u been diagnosed for radiculopathy? Do u have pain down the leg on standing, walking or bending forward? I was diagnosed by a physical therapist of disc protrusion and lumbar radiculopathy just by my symptoms, but it's been over 3 months, my symptoms are more or less same and pain is worse. Thinking to do mri. U pls do mri too (see an orthopaedic doctor first). Hope this helps

@@anjanaiyer6120 I haven't been diagnosed with anything yet, tomorrow I will go to see a neurologist although I did for some time suspect radiculopathy I think my symptoms are described better with Cidp but the pain on my hip to spine is growing so maybe and I hope you are right

I think the answer to the question should be B if it’s L5

Hey! Thanks for reaching out. This is a little bit of a confusing topic, but our image at the end should help clarify why the L5 nerve root is compressed. For Step 1 purposes you should know that the nerve that's affected is typically below the level of where the herniated disc has occurred. This is in line with what is taught in other popular review resources such as First Aid 2019 page 446. In real practice this is a bit trickier and if you'd like to learn more about it, then there is also an awesome article in UpToDate on lumbar radiculopathy: www-uptodate-com.ezproxy.lib.utah.edu/contents/acute-lumbosacral-radiculopathy-pathophysiology-clinical-features-and-diagnosis?search=L4-L5%20nerve%20root%20compression§ionRank=1&usage_type=default&anchor=H9&source=machineLearning&selectedTitle=1~150&display_rank=1#H9). Hopefully that all helps!
