Lumber Wizard comparison

So I had been using the little wizard metal detector for a few years and it was doing ok, until it missed a metal staple in my drill press drawer project. So I upgraded and bought the more expensive lumber wizard 5. This video is a comparison of the two metal detectors against the staple that I had problems with.

Great demo. Joseph. Orientation is a big deal so scanning in a crosshatch manner is best. For the Little Wizard, you must tune properly and turn the dial to the exact point where the beep stops and not just past the beep. Being on the very threshold at the beep point will give maximum detection. You were dead-on in testing pieces by hand before you scan actual pieces to cut. Also, with both detectors always use a new battery and ensure as the battery ages you don't go past about 8.2 volts as lower voltage lowers detection depths. I created these about a quarter-century ago and I am always here for all those use my products. We warranty these products far past the one year as stated on the package. We are a small company that absolutely loves our customers. Again, great video and thank you for being a loyal user. I appreciate you greatly. Happy Woodworking! Thanks a ton, Billy Carmen Wizard Industries, Inc

Thanks :) yep, I always tuned the little wizard right at the point of the beep change. I am glad you liked the video. Thanks for making such useful products. Since Jon S asked below 4 days ago, I will ask you, do you have a good suggestion of a product for those people doing their own sawing of logs? I suggested the larger wizard but if there is something better that would be good to know too.

Hi Joseph, thanks for the review. My dad has been cutting some boards out of some logs and has had some issues with nails. Have you tried looking for metal objects in raw timber? Do you think this is the unit to go with for this task?

That will find steel in thick material, for logs, it all depends how big and deep it is from the surface as to if it would find it. If you do get one, you could do a test like I did with 2x4 or such to see how well it does for what you run into. For really thick logs though you may need a regular metal detector or something..not sure. I like this one for what I do. It for example picked up small staples in a particle board desktop that had veneer. And edging glued on , ie for my reclaimed wood project I was working on today. Maybe check on logger forums to see what they use?

Another thing I thought of, for the two logger youtube channels I watch "Matthew Cremona" and "Out of the woods", both just upgraded their saws to using carbide tip blades so it just cuts through the metal and ignores it more than the normal saw blades. So that is another option, not ideal if you miss some metal, but at least it will damage the blades less.

Your SawStop saw worked as intended. SawStop will only work if there’s conductivity between the operator and the blade. While never cutting any metal with a saw blade is best I doubt very much that a staple would in anyway way harm a quality blade. Check out this video on SawStop myths. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NV6Jhw0hhBI.html

Did you tune the lil wizard first

I did not tune it...even tuned however, the smaller unit has less of a sensing range. So I am glad I got both when I did, but prefer the larger unit for what I need.

I just realized you may have meant, did I set the sensitivity to high, ie tune the dial. yes I set it to the proper setting as far as I understand it, the issue is the larger unit can detect smaller pieces of metal from further away, as found when the small one missed the piece of metal in the test block and i ran that through my sawstop. Luckily it did not cause any issues when it did it.
