Sold my GH2, then bought G85, then bought GX85 (giving a try). Ended up selling everything and switched back to GH2. Boom! You simply can't beat it. Best sensor ever.
Wow, really? I've had a GH2 for 4 years and I've been meaning to upgrade to a G85 or even a GX85 (for budgetary reasons). I won't ever get rid of my GH2 but I want to replace it with something better/newer
We shot a 43 minute horror feature "Dr. Ling's Torture Greenhouse" entirely on a GH2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l46zI57h8BE.html Lenses used: 99% of it was shot w/ an SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 12mm T1.6 and 1% (if that) w/an Olympus OM-System F.Zuiko Auto-S 1:1.8 50mm. I think 4k is just hype for most filmmakers. Massive files that cause nothing but problems and nobody will ever even notice the extra resolution.
Fantastic video, brother! Just picked up a GH4, but am definitely getting a GH2 as well to play with. Thanks for the great info; I love your content. All the Best ☮️
Hello, i love your video! I have a question: I'm not an expert, but I wanted to buy this camera. Do I need extra lenses to make these cinematic low aperture settings, or are basic lenses already included? That's what I never understand about cameras... Thanks :)
Hello, I have purchased a panasonic gh2 with a 14-140mm lens, I will use it mostly to make short films, can you give me some advice to make professional videos? and another thing ... would you recommend me to hack it? Thanks a lot.
Noel Fitzmaurice Hi Noel. The Neewer cage is for the GH3 and GH4. It works, but can be a little finicky. We are planing to do a GH2 rig video in the near future so please subscribe and click the notification bell so you don’t miss it!
great video mate! I'm an aspiring ameatueur filmmaker and considering this as my first camera to shoot shorts. just wondering if you have any tips regarding lenses or anything to get a 16/35mm film look?
Thanks dude! To get a film look you have to make sure you light/compose/move your shots in cinematic ways. Lenses Like cine lenses can achieve a quality look. If moneys tight then look at vintage lenses, very affordable and add character which can help achieve the film look. Check out our other video where look at two inexpensive vintage lenses!! Hope that helps.
Hi Leo! For video I found the Sony A7 III unreliable. I instead sold my Sony A7 III and bought a Lumix GH5 and Sony A6300. I now have a fantastic camera with pro video features in the GH5 and a great stills camera that shoots 4K in the Sony A6300.
madsciencefilms I’ve heard mostly good things about the A7III. The main thing I’m afraid of with the GH5 is the lack of a decent AF. I am a one man band and I NEED good autofocus. It takes me 3 times as long to film with the GH2 using manual focus lenses because I have to keep the point of interest within focus and I’ve gotten good at it but having a decent AF system would make my life so much easier.
The Sony cameras have amazing AF and the Sony A7 III in particular has one of the best in the mirrorless world. When I decided to sell my Sony A7 III I realised that I would be missing that awesome AF, so I bought the Sony A6300 with the LUMIX GH5. The Sony A6300 has great AF so I kinda have the same AF ability when filming myself, but the GH5 does have decent AF when paired with a native lens. Don’t forget that the GH5 (and most recent Lumix cameras) has a really good phone/tablet app too! This will enable you to not only control your focus whilst in front of the camera, but you can control loads of other settings too. Something to think about.
zacharias pap , EOS M has better quality in RAW and more control after you shot ( white balance, midtones, shadows and recover highs,, BUT.. there is a one big BUT!.. it takes whole lot time to learn Magic Lantern .. and honestly even if its better Image Quality wise.. i think GH2 is better. I own both. 2.5k in RAW on EOS is amasing.. colors, rendering and details are like downscaled 4k.. but price is time consuming. GH2 is just plug and play type while EOS RAW and Magic Lantern is like building your first racing drone without a proper knowledge ;) it fles good as hell (if you know how to put all things together .. and have time for it!) cheers!
Nice overview, I was looking at this camera but ended up going for the cheapest full frame i could get, getting great 1080p is pretty cheap these days. As i get back into filming its easy on the wallet right now and im loving it! Might even pick this one up as my backup. 4k can wait if you ask me.
SweetLowFat Jesus Thanks for your comment!! I agree, 4K is not everything and 1080p is affordable. Which full frame camera are you using at moment? The GH2 is a fantastic camera for video and definitely worth picking one up.
Hey Thomas! I've been messing about with a few hacks and all have given me pretty good results. For this video the hack used was the driftwood hack. Which hack have you been using? Also, the kind of lens you put on can really add to the overall quality.
GH2 color science and detail are excellent, and it can be hacked for grading or narrative work. Grab a Metabones Speed Booster (MB_SPEF-m43-BM2) and you have an APS-H, EF mount 1080P powerhouse for less than $600. They serve as back-ups and B and C cams for my GH5.
I'm someone just starting out, and I'm looking to get the GH2 to start with. I have a couple of questions. 1. Is this the camera I should get for less than $300? (super limited budget) 2. Do I NEED to hack it to get started? 3. If I can only get one lens (aside from stock) which would you choose for a very cinematic look?
@@cuthugas If you can get it for less than 300, just make sure it works! No, you don't need the hack, but the hack unlocks very nice image quality. If you budget is very limited, look at getting old manual focus lenses and an appropriate adapter. Remember that the m43 sensor has a crop factor of 2x, so a 50mm lens becomes a 100mm equivalent on the GH2, etc.
@@cuthugas 1. The GH2 is a great 1080 camera for $300. 2. No, but if you plan to color grade the film, the hacked firmware will give you more recorded information (the larger file sizes). This helps dial in the color. 3. 50mm 1.8 or lower. Vintage lenses are inexpensive old chunks of metal. You can drop a 50mm on the concrete and it still photograph. I've done it. You shouldn't. Plus many will need adapters ($12) and a have a TIMES 2 crop factor. The photos will look like 100mm (2 x 50mm). Telephoto lenses, like 100mm, are cinematic for me.
Hi Craig, Josh has pretty much nailed it! There are plenty of videos on vintage lenses to see which will work for you. You can find a review on vintage lenses we have on our youtube page here...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4N1WHHyfnL0.html. Let us know how you get on. All the best!
Wow! Thanks guys. I actually was able to gey a GH4 for $499. A bit over budget, but I think it will give me some more shelf life. I'll be trying to get a speedbooster and some vintage lenses next. I really want that Super 35 look. ;) Thanks again for taking the time.
Record at the highest video quality possible: Creative mode - Cinema 24H 1080p 24fps ISO no higher than 640 1/50 shutter Picture Profile - Smooth and set all values to -2 When exporting make sure the settings are optimised for Facebook and Instagram. Some editing programmes have presets for Facebook and other popular websites. Check out our video on best video export settings for more info. Hope that helps!
@@madsciencefilms Not too much yet since I focused on Photography. But there is something to come this summer. I did some channel swapping tests already and with it works flawless with the hack. IG @monkelmann :)
i do have this gh2 camera , its a nice learning/filming tool . low light footage is bad though . and footage is shaky without a tripod ps : any cheap gopro3 can do slowmotion
@@jamomorrissey I ended up getting the A5100 but .. it works fine with hdmi and a monitor but image edge desktop doesnt support it for live view ... if you know any other programs that would enable me to view on a mac or pc video live view while recording?
Ripley I also have the Sony a5100 and it’s another fantastic camera, but stills are far better than the GH2 on the Sony a5100. I don’t know of any other apps I’m afraid.
I think you're overlooking the biggest limitation of the GH2 for 1080p video recording... frame rate. It can only record 24 FPS in progressive mode. The difference between 24 FPS and 60 FPS is unmistakable when watching video and the biggest limitation of the GH2, which is an otherwise fine camera.
polaris911 Well that would depend on your needs. As stated in the video; for most narrative works the frame rates available are enough. You can achieve higher frame rates with 720p, which can be upscaled with ease and not much loss of quality - if you hack the camera also.

Claire B. GH2 has better image quality with the hack, but a canon 80d has great AF and a lot of bells and whistles. Depends on what you’re planning to shoot?
80d autofocus and colors are great... i used 80d today, and had gh2 previously... gh2 hacked is amazing ... but 80d our of box is easier to use (my 2 cents) :)
Tag Team Gaming Hey thanks for our comment. To be honest I’ve not tested that as most of what we film is narrative video work. I’m sure there is a hack that can break the 30 minute record limit.
There is another video with the same content, so are u James Morrissey? This is so wonderful,so I get the same patch, make a video with low light,100%raw,may give someone some clue
IsRaeL Woo Yeah, I have a personnel channel too. Mad Science is where we go more in depth into filmmaking, advice and reviews of gear. We may do a ‘How to hack the GH2’ video in the near future so consider subscribing! Cheers.
@@madsciencefilms that's a good news for people who need, may be a little depth also about the settings inside the camera after hacking, and also talk something about different patches, btw a personal question: there seems some patch in 250mb/s ,177mb/s.......... are they the best choice?
IsRaeL Woo I used version 2 of the viltrox. There are so many hacks and I would suggest you try them and see which one works for you. Note: Hacking could ruin your camera.
@@HellVanSingMusik you don't know what you are talking about. Even hacked the 25 fps mode in GH2 is flawed as it cant run at same bitrate as 24p as it crashes. 25 fps was implemented after the release and the GH2 sensor readout is not optimal for 25 fps or 50 fps. It works at max quality only at 24p and 60p.
@@sa.t.2507 I did cut material from both cams, so I think I indeed could know what I'm talking about. Besides a higher bitrate, which does not necessarily means a better image, the footages quality and look was better. And I don't see the problem with "only" 24 instead of 25p - you use what works best.
@@HellVanSingMusik I was on the team who tested out the new hacks that Driftwood released to the GH2 and we never managed to get the same bitrate out of 25p as of 24p. 25p mode comes from 50i footage converted in camera to 25p, hence less quality. This was the only way getting to 25 fps im cam with a software update. No one said that higher bitrate gives better quality but in intense situations such as a wide shot of an ocean with motion all over the image you would see that the lack of data would make the image worse. 24p with the hack = All Intra with high bitrates. 25p (HBR mode) = Long GOP mode hence the lower bitrates and worse quality. 24 vs 25 is critical if you work in the pro segment such as TV. Try using 24p in an PAL country and kiss your ass goodbye.
hard to take this video seriously whit the shitty audio editing..STOP putting background music to videos with *narration* .. it ONLY makes it HARDER to hear what you are saying and is VERY distracting ... EVERYONE STOP DOING THIS.. we are NOT here to listen to music !!
