What is the best method of color grading the Lumix GH6? In this video, I will share my thoughts on how you should go about it and whether GHAlex can help you create colors similar to the Arri Alexa.
Chapters:
Intro: 0:00-1:41
My normal grading workflow without a LUT: 01:42-3:59
GHAlex: 4:00-6:05
Panasonic V-Log LUT to Rec.709: 6:06-7:14
Comparing the different looks: 7:15-10:22
Outro: 10:23-11:34

Hey Richard, Alex here. Be sure to check out the GH6 specific version just released (it's quite a distinctive camera from the 5 era). Also, there was an issue with far orange in the original GH5 version, which was fixed last fall. Be sure to re-download that for clean projection in far orange (the original plain GH5 variant).

Thanks Alex! I appreciate the fast response. I'll be sure to look into this.

I wish there was a tutorial of step by step, how to use this luts in each program... specially premiere pro. There is no info online at the moment except a long PDF you get when you purchase it.

@@murdock1655 I've wanted to do that for the longest time, though work on the quality of the code has always taken precedent. I'm currently trying to finish a big software version of EC, and I want to have video tutorials out of the gate upon its release. Thereafter, communication will take precedence.

@@alexmack106 its not a very clear workflow at this stage and the PDF while detailed has some poits that can be quite confusing. I loved the GH5 version... but finding difficult to apply a fluid workflow with the GH6aLex.I would never purchase the GH6 version if I didnt try the GH5Alex before... so for someone that is on the search of a fluid workflow... hard to sell the GH6 for lack of good information out there

@@murdock1655 Ah, you're familiar with it. The key thing to know is that the workflow is identical across cameras. The only difference in the case of the 6 is to set DR Boost to On (and VLog to Iso 2000). After that, the standard order of ops comes in to play (WB -> [PRE] -> Conversion -> [POST] -> Any extra color grading)

Rather than you doing your primary grade of Lift, Gamma and gain to open out the log footage, have you considered letting Resolve do the job for you? When I start a project, I go into the Colour Management Page. From there I go to Colour Science and choose DaVinci Colour managed. In Colour processing mode I choose HDR DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate. The Output colour space is Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 The next bit is to tell Resolve what footage I am using. There are a few ways but the simplest way is to import media into my edit page. From there I right click on the clip and this brings up a box. I go to the Input Colour Space and select Panasonic V-Gammut. I then right click the clip to get the box up again. This time I select Input Gamma and choose Panasonic V-log. Once I do this, then Resolve does some sexy calculations and maps my Log footage into a Rec 709 colour space of my monitor. With a couple of mouse clicks Resolve opens out my footage without me having to guess. I also have a GH6, upgraded from the GH5. I also used to experiment with the GH Alex LUT pack as well. If you follow these steps, which I learned from professional Colourists, you may be pleasantly surprised at how good Panasonic's colour science is direct out of the box. I highly recommend looking at the RU-vid channel for Darren Mostyn. He's a professional colourist who does work for all the main TV channels here in the UK.

The V-Log Lut comes with Resolve. You should be able to find GH-Alex by doing a quick Google search. However, you r best bet may be doing color management with Color Space Transforms or Resolve Color Management. That way you will get the colors that the camera manufacture intended.
