I think Strong World is actually a great indicator that Oda still has romance in the back of his mind when it comes to Luffy and Nami. 1. Oda clearly states that Luffy and Nami are the hero and heroine. 2. Sanji, who's very in touch with emotions states that Nami's message was a love message. Nami not only doesn't correct him, but adds on to his statement, stating that her message was addressed specifically to Luffy. 3. Oda wrote this movie himself so this is how he views their relationship. This is consistent even in Film Gold. Where Oda goes out of his way to add in a scene where he draws a direct parallel between Luffy and Nami, and Tesoro with Stella (his lover). Now with this new prototype sketch where the proto-Luffy falls in love with the proto-Nami, I'm starting to doubt that Oda ever saw them as strictly platonic. I think there's also an interview where Oda says that Luffy and Nami's bickering was inspired by his irl interactions with his wife.

this may turn into me yapping so hopefully you can just bare with me for a bit😅 while it may be true that neither has made any explicit depictions of being romantically involved or interested with eachother, but we should consider the weight and time it will take for each of their dreams to come to fruition. Luffy will likely be king before nami maps out all of the world, because that's just how big the world of one piece is(I think it was something like 7× larger than real life earth) So there could be repressed emotions or something, maybe not. Who knows Either way, it's likely that due to luffys adventurous nature and desire to truly be the most free person in the world be it on land or sea, he will stay with nami and help her throughout the journey she takes to complete her mission/goal. If I had to describe her as anything but his nakama right now it would be that she's the literal embodiment of his ability to go wherever he wants whenever he feels like it, a large part of his sense of "freedom". As for boa, oda has made a couple of mentions regarding dynamics with characters with her type of personality. The main reason she got romantically interested in luffy was first and foremost a way to drive the plot, allowing luffy to infiltrate impel down to save ace. As for luffy himself, it's not that he makes no qualms about it, he has actually rejected her twice on panel/screen and more likely than not way more than that considering the time he spent on Amazon lily. He simply gives a straightforward answer every time, even if it is to play into comedic interactions, just like sanji fawns over all pretty women, even ones that aren't nami or Robin. Key difference is boa is focused on luffy and luffy alone, and is hellbent on marriage. And marriage doesn't really align with how luffy would describe or interpret freedom, it actually greatly conflicts with it Besides, he knows she has a while empire on Amazon lily she's responsible for Yes if he asked her she would drop everything there to do what he wants, but in character I can't see him ever doing that🤔 Right now he's too focused to consider anything besides his determination and his pursuit of freedom, and of course becoming the king of pirates. And if, that's a SUPER big if btw, luffy ever were to develop romantic feelings for anyone my guess is that it would be nami. Due to extensive time, respect, trust, and loyalty alone they have already built a solid friendship and fans can interpret their interactions however they like Now, the last few parts regarding the dynamics thing Oda I believe mentioned he likes to do unrequited love types of things because it serves as away to forward plot, make for funny interactions, and because if he were to do any bidirectional romance he would find it way too embarrassing😂 this was during an interview with the author of detective Conan if im remembering correctly that is Anyways characters like sanji and boa are usually just comedic relief and plot drivers Impel down and reunion on sabaody going into Fishman isaldn are pretty good examples of that I think But this is just a single perspective from me alone, I encourage alternate thought processes and multiple considerations The world of one piece is too rich to not have fun and speculate sometimes✌️
