A short film inspired by the night sky.
Shot on the island of Grand Cayman
GEAR USED to produce this video:
Canon 70D: amzn.to/2Zwowho
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8: amzn.to/3spRH2j
My family took a week-long vacation to this island in hopes to breathe and spend some time together before returning to hectic life at home in Ohio. The view of the stars from Grand Cayman is stunning, to say the least. I felt inspired to tell a story; I wanted to visualize my imagination at the moments while stargazing.
This project might actually be my favorite to have worked on over the last few years. Many of the shots were taken practically with only one LED light and a tripod. The time lapses were a different story. I dabbled with Magic Lantern and used an intervalometer system to capture photos every so often. Since these shots took so much time, I needed to make sure I had the PERFECT angle, aperture, ISO, white balance, and shutter speed in order to capture something this unbelievable. I was stunned the first time I tested "night-lapses" out; the picture was so clear! After several delays on our flight home, I finished the editing (using Premiere) sitting on the floor at the airport.
I've never done anything this imaginative, yet I'm very happy with the way it turned out. It's something very precious to me.
Thank you, Anthony Gonzalez, the genius behind the music of M83.
Our imagination allows us to travel to far, unreachable places.
The complexity, yet simplicity of it all. It's wonderful.

5 years later, I still think of this short film. Honestly the best one I have seen. Today, I heard the song used in this on Spotify and the first thing I thought of was this.

In 2016, before buying my first camera, I searched far and wide for little gems like this to get an idea of what different cameras could do. Now 6 years later, I fell into a YT rabbit hole and suddenly recalled this video. I was fortunate to find it again, and it's still just as breathtaking as I remember.

Recently I purchased a Canon Vixia G30 and wanted to see what it could do. The moon appeared huge the other day and when I saw what my camera was capable of, naturally I became pretty excited, so I followed the moon along with the sunset. As for the music, nothing matches the epic awe of the stellar sky like M83!

Wow this is incredible, how did you do the starlapse? I have a canon 70D and i've never succeeded in making a sucessful starlapse.. this video was wonderful man. I loved the lighting game and the end especially :)
@collinausbury
@collinausbury 7 лет назад
+MrMilan I appreciate it! The star lapse took a few hours to set up. Granted, I was on an island so there was literally no light pollution. I looked up how to use the intervalometer through Magic Lantern. This function allows you to take and expose a photo for a certain amount of time every x amount of seconds. I set my camera up and let it take a photo every 30 seconds while exposing the photo for either 20-25 seconds to pull in all the light possible. Then I pulled up a chair on the beach and fell asleep for a few hours. My camera battery had died, but there were some 400 pictures taken. Then you grade one photo, copy the grade onto the remaining hundreds, then create a time lapse through a program like GoPro studio which does it all for you. I may create a tutorial. Would you watch it? Cheers.
@MrMilan17
@MrMilan17 7 лет назад
Thank you so much! I'd definitely watch a tutorial, that would be super useful especially if you showed me your aperture, ISO, shutter speed and more. It would mean the world to me since i've been trying to make a starlapse since forever! +Nikolai Petroff I shoot most of my stuff at 24fps. Mastering your white balance, learning shutter speeds, and never blowing out your ISO will give you good results. I'd encourage you to really just practice with the basics. Put yourself in an environment where you need to switch between these quickly so you're forced to learn fast. Experience is something you can't learn in a classroom or by researching online. Hope that helps.

Amazing shot! Been watching this video from time to time in the past year. The reason i am commenting is because there is this new commercial from a car company (i cant remember the car maker) which has the same song lol, but the funny part is that in one of the quick B-Roll videos they show in the commercial, they played a B-Roll of a nights sky just like this one...
