Excellent tips. And I think a lot of people can learn from #2. That is one of the primary reason people don’t pitch correctly. Good stuff, Steve!

I purchased the Lunar Solo last fall and received it just before the first snow. I had watched your “how to pitch “ video and was able to get a nice pitch on the first try (it snowed the next day). Thanks for the extra tips. I’m excited to use my new tent this summer.

Lunar Solo. My beloved tent. Lol, not my only tent by far but on a long day hike it comes with me. My PCT attempt it was my go to. My only thing to watch is the angle of the ground, if it pushes on the pole it loosens the other side. No big deal.

Any idea if the Zpacks free standing poles could be adapted for the Lunar Solo? I camp in some sandy areas that stakes are a pain.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 года назад
Wow. Probably not impossible but it would take some serious modifications. If you have ricks in the sand areas you could always use this method. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jG-_z7Qhp8I.html I stake my shelters with rocks all the time. Hope that helps.

I have never owned a tent like this.... was thinking about trying it out but condensation is keeping me for a tent like this ( hammock camper) and I live in the south east by the Gulf of Mexico... how bad is the condensation in this tent Thanks for the tips
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 года назад
It will have condensation like any tent if the conditions are right. I've gotten used to sleeping with the at least one of the panel doors open to help mitigate the condensation problem when it can be an issue. The nice thing is that any slight breeze will keep the tent pretty dry overall. Also if you are using water repellant down (which most down is nowadays) its really not going to be that big of a deal even if you brush up against the walls at any point. Hope that helps!

Just wonder, with this newer model do you have more room inside it than the older model. It seems that this one has the pole set a little higher than the recommended 49 inches.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 года назад
Hi William. You are correct regarding the pole height. I typically pitch my lunar solo with 51" or 130cm. I dont know why, but for me the pitch seems more correct at that height. I also tilt the pole back ever so slightly. It's not much at all but the pole is not perfectly straight up and down as well. Hope that helps.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 года назад
One other thing. Yes there is a little bit more room at that height as well. It's not a major change but there is a little bit more room.
@AdventureswithWillem
@AdventureswithWillem 3 года назад
Thanks, Will that work with the older model as well? I know you used to have one.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 года назад
@@AdventureswithWillem I remember trying it in my yard at 51" and it worked just fine, but by that point I was already using the newer model so technically I've never tried 51" on the older version in the field.

I fixed my pitch by pitching the Lunar Solo and going to a Nemo Hornet 2P when I need a tent. Tarp and bivy anytime the weather is favorable. Looking forward to trying a hammock setup now that I've bailed outta SoCal and have trees everywhere to hang from.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 года назад
Very nice. I've wanted to be the tarp an bivy guy but it didn't quite work out for me. I still may give love another chance and try a tarp and bivy setup again. As far as hammocks go; it think the idea is nice however it seems like a lot of parts and when I'm tired, a lot of parts is not helpful. LOL! But yeah man. I wish we could live like the east coasters do; have fires and crap loads of trees everywhere. Many times in So Cal we're more in a glorified desert/forest hybrid than an actual forest. Any who. Enough of my ramblings. Take care.
