Well produced video here Steve. I've been researching a two wall tent to go along with my Durston X-Mid 1 person. Mainly for the colder weather with the condensation.
A lot of people are making fun of this but its usefull info. I have been debating between this and the MSR Pocket Rocket 2. It seems like this is thr better performing stove overall but im still tempted by the PR2 for the small size.
Hey Tuba! Great video! SoCal hiker here too. Question. I ordered a 2+pro for myself and gf but wanted to get a 1p pro for solo. In hindsight, do you regret not getting a 2 pro? I’m on the fence!
I think if I were to continue on with this style tent then the 2 pro would have been the better option for general comfort. That’s not to say the 1 pro isn’t spacious. Rather you have to be pretty disciplined with your gear if you want it in the sleep chamber with you. The 2 Pro will certainly allow you spread out when you’re by yourself. With all that said I’ve been transitioning to a more comfortable overall setup. I’m willing to carry a bit more (within reason of course) if it means I’ll be more comfortable at camp. So a bit heavier shelter is well within my willingness to carry nowadays. Hopefully that helps.
@@TubaSolotheHiker thx for the feedback! My intention was to have a Helinox Chair zero holding a 40l pack under the vestibule, if that would even work. What did you transition to?
@@markdavid801 I haven’t done videos lately due to just not wanting to got through the rigamarole of all that. But I’ve been backpacking here and there. I’ve been bouncing between the Zpacks Altaplex and the Big Agnes Tiger Wall Platinum 2. I also still have the Zpacks Duplex that I’ll take if I want to have a 2 person (in tent terms) space, but still keep it light. It’s basically those three shelters that I’ve found to be the most functional for me.
Great video - thanks! I love my WindMaster stove so much more than others I own (Optimus Crux Lite, Trangia alcohol, etc.) that the nesting question is not an issue for me. I went thru similar process with 4-flex & triflex stands, 450, 750 & 900 mL pots. The few extra grams of the WM stove is not a hassle & could save me grams of fuel vs lighter or smaller stoves. I like to cook in camp, not only boil water, so the WM is a superior stove with its regulator compared to others that can't run a decent simmer. In the end, I store the WM stove, mini Bic, small sponge & buff in the 750 Ti pot. I recently found there is enough space to stash a couple instant coffee or tea bags so I don't have to retrieve my food bag upon waking to make my first hot drink. I now carry the fuel canister separately in outer pocket of pack.
Wow, I'm late to the game. Just found you off of an old John Kelley video. As a middle aged heavier guy that has just recently into camping, I feel this. "Do you want 3, or 6?" Yup. Gotta ask, how did you come up with "Tuba Solo"?
I saw Dan's comment stressing the need for an accurate square pitch & thought that could be an issue for some, or if caught with impending bad weather & a needed to get under cover fast. So there is a need the get it right 1st time because that is simply the fastest way to pitch a tent. So I came up with this method: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5aNTuurDEFE.html A lot of people have found my method very useful & Dan now demos it on his website & links to my video as the originator of the method. I think you may find it useful as many others also have.
Yep. I was actually using your method to set it up. I got pretty decent at it. But when the day is done, I just can't get excited for this tent. I'm too stuck in my old ways of wanting to use the Altaplex.
I bought the piezo model because it was cheapest the the one without it. The piezo takes several tries for it to ignite the gas, but sparks everytime. I think its the position of the igniter. I just use my Bic to fire it up.
Hi steve, just wondering is there any difference between the new silpoly vs the old silnylon other than the material. You say it is a little taller, any thing else thats is different/better than the old one. Is it worth upgrading to the new one if you have the old silnylon.
For whatever it’s worth. Sil polyester in my opinion is vastly better than sil nylon unless you’re in a super dry environment. Then it really doesn’t matter, but yeah. I’ve been very impressed with all the Sil polyester shelters I’ve used. Very much worth the minor increase in weight.
I would most certainly use a ground sheet. I purchased the floor print, but after a the last few years, I've come to trust polycryo over anything. Its certainly durable enough for most situations. That would be my recommendation nowadays.
Nice review but I really think its time to discus your growing stuff sack fixation...don't hold back now. You should have spent the entire video dwelling on this obvious obsession. In fact, we're going to spend the rest of your entire therapy session working on it. When, to best of your memory, was your sack first stuffed and by whom? Its alright. You can tell me, you're in a safe place. We'll start with your...oops times up. That will be three hundred dollars, please 😢Ultralighters😂
@@TubaSolotheHiker Dr. Wheeler isn't in right now,, but if you would like to make an appointment...I was making light of how half of the video reminded me of comedy sketch about a therapy session regarding stuff sacks. And I am a big dummy amoung the biggest fools on the planet. Hominus Sapiens to be exact. I could call you a lightweight but only in reference to your ultralight gear preferences(pun intended). Thanks for having a sense of humor regarding my own. And yes, the stuff sacks are pretty heavy for an item that could easily be accomplished with something as simple as a plastic bag or the like. Have a blessed day and walk in balance 🙃🥳🙂
I don't own a PR2 but I do have a Windmaster which has a similar head. Just based off the size of the head of my Windmaster, I would say no, it would not next kindly unless you took the canister out of the smaller cup and put that some where else.
Yeah. I hear you. I sweat no matter the backpack. I used to use an Osprey pack with ventilation, sweat like crazy in that thing. I sweat like crazy in my Zpacks Arc Haul. Since it seems like I sweat no matter what pack I use I just started to use what was most comfortable. As of late it’s been ULA for me. Take care.
The two most important part of setting up a Lunar Solo is the height of the pole and make sure that the back is not tilted downward. To avoid the downward slope of the back you have to leave enough slack in the back corner lines and don't set your back middle till the end. You nail those to things every time and you're sett up will be pretty much perfect.
I have never had it in windy conditions. The one time that I used it, I was at a relatively protected camp location at 9,200ft. But regarding your question; if I knew I was going to be dealing with high winds often or going on high exposed peaks often, I'd probably pick the Lunar Solo (New catenary cut Altaplex, MLD Mid style tent(s), etc.) over this. But as far as a spacious tent for wind protected locations, its hard to beat.
Do you at all wish you had purchased the 2P? Im not a small guy either and im so indecisive as to which size to get. Im nervous that the 1P wont be enough but the 2P looks massive.
It’s a sleep chamber for sure, so I would say the 2p would maybe be a better option. For me. I can live with the closer walls as long as there is an open feel above me. But that’s me. I would say if you have any concern with space, the 2p would be what to get. Especially if you want to keep gear inside your tent with you. But yeah I know what you mean with the 2p. It does look massive.
2020 Silverado 1500. So far so good. But Im about 20K away from the dreaded 54K mark where these trucks are supposed to fall apart. We'll see..we'll see.
🤣🤣 That grease shot @ 5:33 had me dying. Those Steakums looked awesome! I completely forgot about those badboys. I'm going to have to put those in a video soon.
Glad to see you got in the tent. So many people show pitch videos but never get in their tents. This helps me greatly as I am a big guy and was wondering if my 1p is too small and it's probably that my pitch needs work. Thanks 👍!!!
