Valuable information! Most people (artists) hear stories of people owning their masters but do they know the importance of owning them and how to make them valuable
@@balldontlie4057 - Masters are the original music, if someone else owns it (record labels), the record label gets paid if someone wasn’t to sample the music! Example: Puffy Combs sampled Stings music when they did the Biggie tribute (missing you), Puff didn’t get permission (normally you pay) Sting sued and was awarded something like 100k a month for life! Owning your masters means you have to be paid if someone uses your music (masters) if not the record label or whoever owns the will get paid
@@fxlkpunkrapperKendrick lamar is one who can license some of his music now & receive fees for it. Especially with him not being tied to TDE/Interscope Records as much any more. Streaming is actually just a licensing rights for a platform and users to listen to music or whatever is offered. It's a lot of nuance to it that I don't understand but that's sort of the skinny.

@@insomthegreat How much money do you think a 9-5 employee at a plant generates? Idk, but what i do know he like lack the knowlege and resources to build a system like the plant and self employ himself. Without a label at that time lupe wouldnt make it far most likely.
They can make them worthless. When you get outside of the world of rap, the main reason the bands hold onto their masters or fight for them is to make less money, not more. If you're Radiohead you don't want your music appearing in an advert for blood diamonds, no matter how much money they offer. Lupe even admits it in this video, to make the MOST money, you will need to go to another company for them to sell them. Rappers usually want the masters because they hear their songs everywhere, and want a better cut, same with taylor swift etc. But the reality is, for lupe, unless he has a plan to push his own records better than the record label is doing, then they are worthless, no one in hollywood is going to go search for lupe fiascos home phone number to ask him can they use his song, they will just look through their list of music they can easily use. But dont be confused, Jay-z is not making as much money from his masters as he could be.

100% true. Some artists don’t _need_ their masters because they don’t have the knowledge, connections, or business acumen to actually do anything with them. In those cases it’s better if they negotiate a contract that lets their label keep the masters and they just get a lot of royalties and residuals
nah, you always want your masters. a song you did 20 yrs ago can blow up today and you wouldn't get shyt from it if you don't own your masters. they can use your art for whatever and profit from it.
The problem is the other side is incentivised not negotiate a fair deal. It's the other way they want to take as much as possible. Take your masters and learn as well as pay people who work for you.
Thats how they get over in us, acting like we wouldnt be able to make good decisions!!! Even though if i make a bad decision, its because i didn't get taught about it, Its called learning on the job!!!
Masters aren’t worthless if you don’t use them. The fact that you own you, and someone doesn’t own you, is enough in itself. You have the OPTION to do something with the masters which makes it worthwhile
This is too deep. Demond Wilson recently said America is a Corporation. The name of the game is monitization...He understood Lupe was ignorant to how to best capitalize on HIS own asset. & That's how the ignorant get played in this land.
No, you wouldn't have. Not at all. Please find the flaw in that statement & attempt to Add Value to it. It's levels to attenpt to license & sell something that is "yours" simply because it's "yours".
It wasn’t dumb of him to ask for them with or without a plan. They’re his and whether he sits on em til forever or if ppl sample his music it’s still money in his pocket for when HE needs it. Ppl sampling now without permission. Better ask Rod Wave and Boosie
Lupe is my favorite Lyricist of all time dude is on another level and I think without this 360 deal he could have been much bigger because he dropped two dope albums out the gate
@@darrellwilliams1714 it's a much harder serve, when "asked" condescendingly, them being sure of your ignorance, to throw in their face that you knew EXACTLY how to monetize the masters and didn't need the parasite middle man at all. A total power move
Only rookies think owning your masters is essential. If you argue for your masters without sales then the label will 100% shelve you because they’re not making money anyway. If you leave the label with your masters and let the label build and promote you you’ll sell 10x the records. The problem is kids listening to people like Russ (the poster child for “don’t sign”) who say you don’t need a label when not only did Russ always have ties to labels, his best year was when he was signed. These “independent” artists will tell you own everything when it’s not feasible. What they’ll promote is 100% of 100 sales is better than 10% of 100 when in reality if you were signed you’ll be getting 10% of 10,000 sales.
@@teeboz6237 yeah its different for everyone. I would say Vince Staples is probably the most sensible talking on being signed vs not. The artist also get lost listening to others who really do it on their own. Some only lay do the vocals thats but want more money. 😂 Didnt mix master, make a note, write, market, or even buy studio time yet want more money 😅
@@teeboz6237you are the first person i ever seen talk about this topic logically. People dont know alot of licensing companies are partners with labels. Alot of these independent artists don't have hit songs that people want to licensing anyways.
He’s talking about Lyor Cohen CEO of Warner music group at the time and he was acting like he was for the artist back then which he was really not and if you remember Lupe Fiasco was protesting about this it on RU-vid, and He protested in front of the Warner music group, offices with all his fans, and lyor cohen came down, playing his new music on a boombox radio like he was for Lupe Fiasco, but all the wild he was the one trying to give him the 360 deal that Lupe was complaining about and then he didn’t promote the album right and gave Lupe songs to b.o.b like the song “airplanes” and others songs that were for Lupe.
I don't care how low or high the artists sales are. They are more valuable in the artists possession. END OF STORY ! 17 yrs later give the man his masters.
that's just wrong. If anything, they're more valuable in a record label's possession. There's a reason why independent artists usually sell a whole lot less and it's not because they're worse artists. Lupe even told you in this short clip, they're only as valuable as what you're doing with them.
this was when Atlantic was renegotiating his deal to keep him longer. He’d already released 2 albums and they were offering him a 360 deal he didn’t want.
You don't "ask" for masters after you signed the contract & made the music. You have to put that in your contract before you make the music, otherwise the producers & studio owners own those songs.
This is before he signed the deal, he clearly states that they offered him a 360 and his response was that he needed the Masters with an advance to consider it.
@@triXXareN The original commenter was saying that he should have asked for his masters before he signed his original deal; not the new 360 deal which came after.
@@mrmusic21 yeah but if you dont have leverage they have no reason to do that, so asking doesn't mean you'd get it. Plus at the time not many artists could even get it.

No it’s not. A 360 deal is temporary, sure they profit from everything you do but not for the rest of your life. Owning your masters you own them forever
as someone who grew up in chicago on the era where all music playing locally was drill rap like in 2008-2010 lupe was one rapper that was overlooked i definitely didn't hear about him until like 2-3 years ago and i can say hes the best rapper thats come out of chicago lyrically common is close but lupe is deeper with his music i didn't recognize his songs until i heard kick n push then i was like oh shi i remember dis shi came on da radio i used to fw dis song n he also seem like a cool dude he grew in a area wit a lot violence but chose a different path n even with his music aspired to be different in the sense that instead of soeaking on killing and shooting he spoke on a deeper level giving messages and trying to make shordies more knowledgeable got ma ass speakin differently n shi😂😂😂
Makes perfect sense. Idk if it’s better to just let them have it but it if you truly don’t know what to do with it, at least you can rely on the label’s guidance on how to maximize their use
I’ve seen a lot of videos of people talking about owning your masters but this the first that someone explained that just simply owning them doesn’t do you any good unless you know what to do with them
