Lupe Fiasco: The Original Kendrick Lamar

Every cultural figure doesn’t exist in a vacuum. While originality is a quality that many of the most important artists in the world possess, there are generally a few like minded souls who came before them and fulfilled similar purposes within their chosen industry.
Sometimes, the influence can be directly felt and acknowledged, such as the innumerable artists who are all too happy to praise Kanye West for the immense impact that he had on them during their formative years as he blazed a singular trail through hip-hop. In the same vein, there's no shortage of modern stars who accredit Andre 3000 with broadening their horizons to what could be accomplished through the medium of beats and rhymes.
But for others, their connection to another individual in their field is more unspoken, with the artist in question acting as more of a spiritual ancestor who'd set the precedent for the field that they inhabit rather than being the person who drove them towards the mic in the first place.
In this lane, we find some rappers who were perhaps before their time, meaning that in the years to come when someone came along and fulfilled the same role, then they received the degree of acclaim that others maybe rightfully deserved for taking bold steps for the genre.
Within this precarious position, we find Chi-Town’s own Lupe Fiasco. As with the benefit of hindsight, some believe that he followed a similar path to Kendrick Lamar, but only received a shred of the recognition.

I want to emphasize how true your words are. The recent social landscape is literally the world having caught up to F&L2. That album from 2012 has original Donda cover (its not the first all black cover but the first imo that has similar meaning and intent). Read the lyrics to tracks on it like Strange Fruition and tell me I am lying.

So one thing about Lupe is that his songs aren't that much less accessible sonically, they're less accessible lyrically. Kendrick's music is actually far more challenging than Lupe's from a sonic and structural standpoint. Lupe wouldn't make a "We Cry Together" or any odd the stuff on untitled unmastered". Kendrick sonically is very unique and subversive. Lupe just does verse, hook, verse, hook songs most of the time with a few departures (think prisoner 1 and 2, or Mural, etx) but for the most part it's straightforward hip hop with elite lyricism that requires a lot of reminds. No dis to either of course, both are my faves. Just an observation

Yes fam. I see a lot of people missing this piece. Lupe on straight lyrics is ridiculous, but that's not really where KDot makes his hay. Conversely, I don't think that Lupe gets nearly enough credit for his melodies and accessible flows. I'm Beaming is a BOP. I can just sit and jam that, spit every word on the 5th listen, and it's deep. Lupe has those tracks as well. Where he leaves Earth is on the lyricism, where Kendrick leaves Earth is in the "vibe " the song structures, the energy and eclectic sounds he brings to a record. That man's vocal delivery is also unmatched in some ways! That type of credit is not even something I would think of giving Lupe even though he kills a lot of other areas. I honestly still do not get this comparison lol I really feel like there's a huge difference between these artists aesthetically.

One thing that really wasn't touched on in the video is how much timing is a factor. Remember, Lupe came out in a time when the industry politics were VERY different. We're talking pre-Blog Era, back when the closest thing was Myspace and Hypebeast blogs. The industry was still dinosaur at the time, relying on radio, MTV & BET, and physical CD sales to measure success. Kendrick started his burn DURING the Blog Era (2DopeBoyz, NahRight, etc.), and we're starting to see a drastic shift in power and gatekeeping in the industry. Feels like Lupe was ahead of his time, and arrived a little too early. Lupe is simply a victim of politics + timing, from bad industry deals to his debut falling to heavy bootlegging. Kendrick avoided the politics Lupe went through and managed to be more successful depending on how we see success in hip hop from a general fan POV. The difference for Kendrick is that he's able to maneuver in the industry with the right machine behind him (blog posts, Dre cosigns, indie label in TDE with mainstream business acumen). So as Lupe might've opened doors, Kendrick walked in on time and took advantage of what was given to him that nurtured his abilities in being a hip hop star.

Drill Music in Zion, which is an insane and dope name, is the album that it took for people to truly give Lupe the respect he deserves as an all-time MC. He's been one of my Top 10 favorite rappers of all-time since my first time hearing "Kick, Push" and it was that song in particular that showed me just how different he was from the rest of the industry. Albums like "Tetsuo & Youth" and "Drogas Wave" further confirmed why he is NOT a major label artist because of how much they held back his artistic genius, and his latest album and its overall production process is the stuff of legends alone. One of the greatest rappers to ever touch a mic and there's no argument.

I love Lupe and Kendrick. And Lupe’s first two albums were classics but I push back on this notion that Lupe was the first Kendrick. Kendrick feels more of a rebirth of Tupac. Kendrick has social commentary tracks but also had tracks like Backseat Freestyle, Good kid maad city, king kunta, Humble and DNA to balance it out. Lupe is more complex and clearly never had an interest in making commercial records. Meanwhile Kendrick learned how to do commercial music without diluting the product and did it practically better than most rappers ever have. I do wish Lupe got more respect tho.

I also don't hear Kendrick making songs like Wonder Why They Call You B****, Temptations, I Get Around, or Keep Ya Head Up. Kendrick is definitely closer to Lupe in terms of complexity and being less accessible to a mainstream audience overall. I think part of what happened with Lupe getting X'd out of the game is that he kinda took on a condescending and overly-conscious bravado that alienated a lot of listeners in the mid-2010s. It felt he was pointing the finger at the Black community for a lot of the issues and oppression that we deal with whereas a lot of Kendrick's stuff acknowledges that, along with the systemic issues of America, he too is part of the problem and tries to reconcile with the detrimental aspects of hip hop which then encourages introspection in the listener.

Sadly some folks who pave new roads won’t be recognized until well past their lifetimes. Lu has his props in the right places but mainstream acclaim might come after his life. Let’s appreciate his craftsmanship while he still makes music, tbh DMIZ is a perfect compromise between his fan favorite complexity and being easy to follow for casual listeners.

Lupe Fiasco changed my life, bro. Yeah I know how that sounds but hear me out. Before, I bumped rap and loved it, but my tastes were pretty much determined by whatever the radio played, and I was cool with that. And then, in 2008, I just happened to come across a little lesser known album (at least at the time) called The Cool by Lupe Fiasco in Target. I thought it looked cool, so I picked it up. And then I listened to it. The first few couple tracks were pretty dope (honestly didn’t care much for track 3, Go, Go, Gadget Flow but I came around)…and then I got to track 4, The Coolest. And that was when I fell in love with the album. I quickly snapped up Food & Liquor and, as a whole, actually liked it better than The Cool, but The Cool will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart because it literally started my “Conscious Rap Awakening”. I started looking deeper, looking for other artists I might have missed who weren’t hugely popular on the radio. And that was when I transformed from a guy who really liked hip-hop/rap to a real Hip-Hop Head. To this day, Lupe is still one of my favorite rappers ever and I’ve been bumping his whole catalog this whole time. I’ve been trying to get people to recognize his genius. Easily one of the most (If not THE most) underrated legends out there.

What makes Kendrick K. Dot is his versatility. His ability to introduce a rap that seems simple on the surface, but is actually filled with tons of complexity and depth. It isn’t obvious at first until you dig a bit deeper. Lupe Fiasco simply introduces the complexity as a result you don’t have to dig too far. KL’s albums have this beautiful symmetry in storytelling that flow cleanly and are extremely cohesive, Lupe’s are a bit harder to listen to. KL’s underlying themes feel like they’re discovered by the sharp listener, Lupe’s don’t feel that way to me.

I’m the guy who organized the fiasco Friday protest outside Atlantic records for Lasers looking back we should have fought so much harder for Lupe to either be released from the label or his full vision to come out. That dirty move JZ did you serve himself really left Lupe with a label that tried to use and abuse Lupe. Lupe.. I still luv you, and I thank you for doing a bid with me.

Yo lupe is on another level man. Kendrick is great, but u know exactly what he’s saying straight away. He’s very straight forward and u know what his point is. Whereas lupe gives u metaphors in metaphors in metaphors. On your 100th listen u still probably won’t get the full picture of what he’s saying.

It absolutely sucks that Lupe's label shenanigans halted his career but I genuinely believe Lupe is a top 5 lyricist, maybe even 3, all time and it's not farfetched for those that know of him to say the same. Personally though, almost no Lupe albums strongly resonate with me, I hear his work, think "this is impressive" and never return to the records as a whole unless I'm doing a quality check. I wonder if I would have thought the same of his work had he been able to release what he wanted to during the years he was halted

He is what hip hop music needs especially in today's era where records branded hip hop sell music which sounds like a 5 year old or younger babbling an has no substance ,even if you making a commercial record where you want the listeners attention on the beat an not the lyrics it should still have substance to it

Whenever anyone talks about Lupe in good grace, it makes me happy. I saw all the news and K-Dot becoming famous, but 20-year-old me always wondered what happened to Lupe. Why are all these rappers here but not Lupe? While Kdot is the goat, rightfully so, I will always hold Lupe on top between both Kdot and him, as his songs were part of me growing up.
