so i heard lupin's birthday is supposedly today. to celebrate, i decided to take his first ever movie out of context. hot take: streamline dub is better than geneon dub (only for this movie) all rights belong to TMS
I really like the Geneon dub - I think if any movie/OVA in the franchise deserves the "gag dub treatment" it's this one - but folks sleep on the Streamline cast and that's unfortunate. Bob Bergan turned in tremendous performances in both this and Cagliostro, which can't be easy. He's an excellent anchor for a talented cast and while the current cast is the gold standard, this one deserves its props.
(Looks at description) Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you in terms of the Streamline dub. Everyone here did so much better than when they did Cagliostro. I figure it's because Cagliostro (and by extension their Miyazaki Part 2 episodes) had the characters watered down and less crazy. This film is pure Monkey Punch, and cast's new energy really shows it; hearing David Povall between the two films is just night and day. The dub itself had the best balance of faithfulness to the script and new material for jokes. I like the Geneon dub, but I feel it converted too much of the dialogue into jokes. The extra cartoon SFX were an odd choice, but for the most part, they don't take too much away. I often find myself coming back to Mamo because of its energy and chaos. This video captures that chaos perfectly.
Ngl I like fujiko's va in this version. While the most common English dub fits her character the most, this one kinda reminds me of Eda from owl house a little bit. Love her lots.
This is the best Mamo dub. The Geneon one is fine, but plays TOO fast and loose with the script while also having too many slight anachronisms for the 70s period. This one has a better balance; it has fun with the writing, but is also more faithful while capturing the spirit of the film. And the voice cast was fantastic, especially after perfecting their roles with Cagliostro and the two Miyazaki episodes. Bob Bergen might be the best English Lupin.
^ what th other person said, plus in general theres i know a few dubs where lupins called wolf for various films due to copyright issues regarding the original arsene lupin books, a problem of which never really had weight in japan hence why the name was only changed in dubs where the copyright was relevant
@@involith the streamtine dub of cagliosto and episode 145 & 155 of part 2 and the bye bye liberty dub and the manga uk dub of mamo use wolf instead of lupin. Streamline pictures dubbed Cagliostro back in 1991, because they had dubbed Miyazaki movies beforehand. But the Arsene Lupin copyright wasn’t over yet in the west, so they called lupin wolf. Wolf in French is loup, which originates from the Latin word lupus, which sounds alot like Lupin. Later they would also dub episode 145 and 155, but when they dubbed mamo in 1995, the Arsene Lupin copyright was over in the west, so they called him by Lupin. That same year, Manga Entertainment would take interest in the streamline dub of Cagliostro and would license it and release Cagliostro in the UK, Australia, France, Spain and the Netherlands. Manga Entertainment UK would also dub ‘bye bye liberty’ and ‘mamo’ in 1996. only realising it in the UK and Australia this time. Lupin would also be called wolf in this dub because the UK and Australia stil had the Arsene Lupin copyright. In 2000 the license of the streamline dub of Cagliostro expired, so they redubbed it, this time Manga entertainment would dub it and not Manga entertainment UK. So it was dubbed in in the America and not in the UK. It had a completely new cast of voice actors and this time they called lupin by his name and realised it in America, the UK and Australia.(I have no idea when the Arsene Lupin copyright expired in the UK and Australia, so I don’t know if it was legal or not)
Starting to wish I watched this. I watched the dub with Tony Oliver as Lupin and Paul St Peter as Mamo, it's the Streamline Dub I really want to watch now.
God I wish Bob Bergen kept playing lupin. His range is nuts. You watch the Miyazaki stuff and you think he’s just good at sorta good guy lupin but this dub proves he could do the more madcap bat shit stuff too
Funny enough, when Geneon dubbed Part II, they initially wanted Bob Bergen to voice Lupin again, but since he couldn't appear because of him being part of the Screen Actors Guild, and the dub of Part II was not unionized, they had Tony Oliver voice him instead
Not sure about that, as I'm sure both Tony and Richard had had some union gigs by that time, and after a few of those, you HAVE to join. There is a section of the union that will let you do non-union projects
