Lupita Nyong'o has said she was the "victim of colourism" as a child, when she "wished to have skin that was different".
Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
The Oscar-winning actor told BBC Newsnight that colourism "is the daughter of racism" in "a world that rewards lighter skin over darker skin".
Nyong'o was raised in Kenya, before moving to the United States.
She was speaking ahead of the release of her children's book, #Sulwe, about a girl with darker skin than her family.
Colourism is prejudice against people who have a darker skin tone or the preferential treatment of those who are of the same race but lighter-skinned.
Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

Love the steely way she stood up to this lady trying to push her around for a soundbite, hate that the BBC put "on... Justin Trudeau" in the title for clickbait even though the anchor failed to get any words out of her mouth on the matter. Words, by the way, that would inevitably cause at least online harassment for Lupita, but BBC/this lady is apparently far more concerned with exploiting her for those sweet sweet clicks than anything else.

Please provide an instance where she previously commented on blackface, individual behavior, or a politician at all. Talking about race and colorism shouldn't be political, that's just part of her life experience. Choosing not to specifically condemn a foreign prime minister doesn't mean she can't talk about her childhood or experiences as a black woman without being a hypocrite.

I was bullied for my dark skin as a kid even by my own brothers. Lighter skin women were praised in my school and had all the guys drooling over them. Lighter skin women were also praised on tv while dark skin women were portrayed as ugly, ghetto , baby mamas , sassy side characters to the white characters, angry, and masculine. I was even told I was “too dark and needed to stay out the sun” by a white girl. I remember being told I was “ pretty for a dark skin girl “ by black men when I started dating.

Really not a white guy problem then, more a woman and black guy problem, besides it's has more to do with farmers back in the day having a tan, Lupita and others like her should ask themselves, why did nobility all over the World before racism was even a word paint their faces pale, it is because the darker you were the more likely you were a dirt poor farmer.

@rdokoye Japan, China, Indian subcontinent, the Middle East all had that custom. In Sub-Saharan Africa(especially in the Golden Horn) men and women would apply paste containing lye to their skin if they were of high birth in order to appear less suntanned. They did this long before they encountered any ships containing a bunch of Portuguese pirates. The parts of Afrca where people made their skin darker had no stratified society, it was basically just sunscreen.
@jbagger331
@jbagger331 4 года назад
@rdokoye A less stratified society in Europe as an example would be the Dark Age Norse, Germanic, Celtic and Slavic societies, in those societies being indoors was practically unheard of, everybody had to be outside and work to survive, which is why all these societies valued people with a healthy complexion and applied different kinds of materials to make themselves seem darker, usually charcoal.

Asked me, do I care? She's in America now. She might well get over it. Race is a big thing here in this country. I don't care. I don't care how much money you get. Cops load to put handcuffs on black people. Now deal with it. I am. I've been dealing with it all my life. What else is new to to all these black immigrants that come to my country thinking they're going to get treated with special privileges? Wrong.

I want people to know that colorism is a two edged sword. I have been bullied, called names and ostracized by my dark skinned sisters all my life because my skin is fair. You always have dark skinned girls talking about being wronged, but why doesn't anyone talk about the other aspect? I have three darker skinned sisters and I think they are some of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. It's not fair to blame us if a guy is so shallow he's stuck on skin color, nor are we to blame for the decisions the media make. I have never mistreated a black woman because of her skin color, never. But I'm on the recieving end of it nine times out of ten. My skin color has never been an advantage to me. In fact. I've had to work three times as hard. If anything at all, it's been a curse.

Jah & Jahes love. I'm very disappointed in Lupita Nyobg'o for refusing to make a statement about the black face phenomenon. She is a very intelligent woman and a talented thespian who was trained at Yale. So, she knows the legacy of minstrel shows and how detrimental it is to black people who descended from enslaved folks. She was awarded an Oscar for playing an enslaved person. I wish she had given some commentary or response to how disgraceful the practice of black face is. And, the racist tenets attached to the minstrel show. Blessed love.#1804#Ayiti#ToutMounseMoun#AbolishCPS#AbolishPoverty#ProChoice#RawVeganforLife#HR40NOW!

Focus should be on something else other than colour and race. Colourism in Kenya is not exactly a problem, it probably becomes an issue when you are middle class because your worries then have shifted from survival to fitting in. If anything, Lupita should fight for equality, wealth distribution, opportunities for the less privileged, poverty as a result of politics and greed... she grew up privileged and while I cant take her hardwork away, I believe she needs to focus on other areas of social injustices. She could fight against FGM, champion rights to equal opportunity in Africa, sensitize against environmental degradation, poaching, chauvinism, malaria.... a whole lot of newsworthy issues need airtime. I am a Kenyan, am dark skinned and am tired of celebrities using this colour thing to elevate. This is just my opinion though, apologies if it rubs off wrong on you
