I’ve always wanted to know how purfling was done down the center of the back. All that labor is so worth it, beautiful design and such a great touch.

Really enjoyed your work and love the design. I've always loved grass seeds and the wheat seed head is lovely. It reminded me of a documentary I filmed of a shepherd who grew his own wheat and made corn dollies. I also made pottery with scraffito wheat heads. I have yet to make purfling. I keep putting it off, but it is a good skill to be able to design & produce. You are right. Building the guitar is one thing, but things like purfling inlay into the headstock and back etc is the artistry. Thanks.

Very beautiful work and a unique pattern. Well done and nicely demonstrated. I know making videos takes lot of time but I would be interrested in a video where you demonstrate how to install such purfling alongside the binding around a guitar body... what tools you use, how to make everything fit, what tools you use to finish the process, etc. Thanks.

Wonderful video. Question could you you fish or hide glue on the parallel glue-ups??
@GarrettLeeLuthier
@GarrettLeeLuthier Год назад
If you mean for the parallelogram glue ups, hide glue would not be a good choice because it's advantageous to have a long open time so that you can make sure every block is perfectly aligned before clamping. Fish glue would be a better choice for its extended open time. If you plan to use heat to bend, hide or fish would not be a good choice because either will melt and the purfling will fall apart.

Where do you get your veneers to make these? Most of the lengths I see online are 12 inches. Super cool video btw!

Thank you for very informative video. I'm already somewhat familiar with the technique of a "symetrical' wheat pattern, but I much prefer the offset style. But I'm a bit confused. What I see you doing physically in the video with the individual halves - and what the result that you are showing is - appear to be two different things entirely. Am I wrong or are you making two 'different' layered stick patterns and then gluing them opposite each other? I completely understand if you are trying to simply highlight the technique without giving away all your secrets, but if that is the case you might mention it under the video as this could end up costing someone (like me _ grin) a lot of money when trying to emulate. That aside, I seriously appreciate your attacking the subject at all. You are the only one on RU-vid doing "wheat" specifically.
@GarrettLeeLuthier
@GarrettLeeLuthier 10 месяцев назад
In the video, I make two sets of layups, each with a different pattern. This is why I have do the process twice in order to produce two halves that are different--not just asymmetric in terms of offset spacing, but different in terms of number of kernels on the wheat head. If you want to simplify things and use less material, make one layup (with a single pattern), take 2 slices off your resulting log, and flip one over to complete your wheat pattern. You can still offset the spacing of the two halves to create asymmetry.
