In this episode of DIY Guitar Making, I build a simple jig for cleaning up and planing binding and purfling strips down to their intended dimensions, using scrap wood, an old handplane blade, a threaded rod, and a dowel.

Eric, thanks for the detailed makeup of that jig. I’m just starting with my first guitar build. I will be making one of those too. Great idea.

Love it Eric! I don't build guitars but I do build turntables and sometimes use inlays for aesthetics and this is a grand solution to getting the strips thicknessed accurately.

Now THERE is a beautiful example of adhering to Man's oldest engineering principle: KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). As an FYI for future use regarding rust removal. I've been a metal fabricator for over 50 years. For 40+ of those years, I tried to remove rust exactly as you did. No joy. The rust removal products promise to remove rust but you find that soaking in the goofy product only works in conjunction with grinding. THEN, I discovered molasses. Mix 1 part molasses to 9 parts water (I mix mine a little stronger.) and soak for 14 days. It ain't instant, but when you pull it out of the mixture, there's not rust down in the pits and you did it with NO elbow grease of die grinding/wire wheeling. If you have time before you need the item, it's the best way to go. Just rinse well and use. You're welcome - that was free. ;-)

Btw: I prepared a 1/4 inch mahogany piece, and plan to laminate it with a 1/32 veneer - and then slice it into a few binding strips. Now, the veneer I cut on the bandsaw to just less than 1/16. Do you have any suggestions (methodical/accurate) of how to go about it, other than just keep scraping and periodically checking with a thickness gauge - all over the 4x34 piece? (A real PITA, and also almost impossible to keep the surface flat and accurate). Also - would you say that maybe it's not a big deal if I have variations of say +- .005? Thanks!

Very good idea. Did you sharpen the blade to any particular angle, or just a 30 degree secondary bevel?

thank you Eric. if you do not mind i use a grinder on the ragged end of the thread all at an angle . the nut idea is good too. its what i do . oh question please why the purfling ? if its plastic or can you get it as dyed wood strips ?
@EricSchaeferGuitars
@EricSchaeferGuitars 4 года назад
Thanks, Walter. That's a good idea. The strip I'm thicknessing has a maple purfling strip glued to the bottom of an ebony binding strip. This will manifest itself as side purfling later after it is installed. Yes, you can use dyed fiber strips too. I use them most of them time, unless I want more of a cream white, which I get from the maple.

Man I could have used this a couple weeks ago, I made wood bindings for the first time they came out great but it took me forever too hand plane & sand them to thickness. Thank you Eric Im going to build this tomorrow.. BTW does it matter which side you feed the binding strips through this jig??
@EricSchaeferGuitars
@EricSchaeferGuitars 4 года назад
Depending on how you sharpened it the burr will be on one side or the other, so whichever side the burr is on. But no, it doesn't matter necessarily. It can cut well on the flat or the bevel side.

The sharpener is WS3000. You can find it at either Rockler or Woodcraft about $199.99

I was just thinking *today* about how the hell am I going to accurately thickness my binding strips without having a thickness sander (first time I'm doing wood bindings, which I'll be preparing myself instead of using ready made plastic bindings). That was extremely helpful!
