Thanks for sharing this informative video. I'm not a luthier but I have made a classical guitar with the first-hand guidance of an experienced luthier. Next I want to build an F4 mandolin by myself; surely your website will become very helpful.

Thanks for a great series of videos. I am binding an ebony fretboard with ebony binding with a contrasting color in between. Should I attempt to glue all three pieces at once, or first glue the colored strip, let it dry, and then attach the binding? Thank you!

Do you subtract the thickness of the binding from the fretboard width so it matches the nut/bridge size?
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 7 лет назад
yes.
@jefe429
@jefe429 5 лет назад
Before gluing the binding do you subtract the binding width from the fretboard by trimming it so your width stays the same or by binding my fretboard am I accepting a wider fretboard?
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 5 лет назад
Yes, take into consideration the width of the bindings.

yes, or you could use the user friendly odorless version sold by Satellite City.

I sure wish the builders from Face Book would watch this vid instead of trying to figure out how to do it, they don't seem to have any common sence where this is concerned at all, this vid is great. Yes, I've told them to go to You Tube.

Hi Robbie- how would you go about mitering in a piece of binding on the bottom of the fingerboard once it has been cut to the proper length? My head is circling around how to remove the width of the binding strip from the fretboard but not the side binding strips. Still a little clunky with a chisel. Thanks.
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 9 месяцев назад
I use a chisel to miter the joint. Just use the back of the chisel as a mirror to help visualize the miter when cutting it. You could also use an xacto saw and miter box to cut the joint.

Is this fretboard already radiused? also can I cut the fret slots after or is that not possible?
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 9 лет назад
This fretboard was radiused after the binding was installed. You could bind a board that is already radiused as well. I would cut the slots before binding though.

I have a guitar I'm experimenting with on refinishing. It does not currently have binding for the fingerboard. Can I cut a binding channel on the existing neck? How do I do that without pulling the neck off the guitar?
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 10 лет назад
I guess it could be done but most folks would pull the neck. This is a pretty advanced operation of cutting binding channels on an existing neck. Pucker factor will go up!
@PLINKER

Would you do a mandolin peg head where there are multiple curves and angles. How do you form the binding to the curves and angles? Thank you!
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 10 лет назад
You either bend the wood or use plastic bindings on mandolin pegheads.

I am replacing a fretboard on a existing neck and I want to Bind it. On the new fretboard would I trim the fret board to allow for the thickness of the binding so it matches the neck when I glue it on? Or would I sand (scrape) the binding to match the neck. The fret board without the binding is trimmed now to match the neck now.
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 2 месяца назад
The total fretboard width, with the bindings, should be the width of the neck. Do your calculations of both the fretboard and the bindings widths to make that happen. Good luck.

just think it would be cool to watch a video of such bending and placing of bindings and cutting binding channels on a tight ares like mandolins and banjo peg heads. thanks Tom

Would it be possible to cut a binding channel once the fretboard is glued onto the neck blank? For example, if we had a neck where the fingerboard was glued onto the blank which was already to the correct dimensions. Could you use a binding router bit in a router and just follow the edge of the blank & install the binding that way? Would there be any disadvantages? Just curious why I don't see people do that. Thanks!
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 9 лет назад
Sure, I suppose that would work but if you made a mistake you would be pretty committed at that point.
@dbhoward56
@dbhoward56 9 лет назад
Once the fretboard is glued to the neck, the only possible way to install binding would be to hand cut the channel using a marking knife or marking gauge to identify the actual dimensions of the binding and removing the waste wood with a chisel, using a router would be impossible with no flat surface for the bearing to ride on.
@AlexStarbard
@AlexStarbard 9 лет назад
***** the way I make my necks it could theoretically work, I just wasn't sure if it was the best way to do it. The order I do my necks is: route for truss rod, general shape (not contoured), glue the fingerboard, size fingerboard with the neck, inlay, fret, shape etc. So after sizing the fretboard (so long as it isn't radiused, or if I made a jig) I could use the edges of the neck to cut the channel. Only problem is the edges need to be perfect, and if the fingerboard overhangs then it wouldn't really work I suppose. I think when I finally try to bind a fingerboard, I'll just do it the way most people do because it does seem to make the most sense.

+Alex Starbard Hi there. I realise that your post is over a year old but I thought I'd reply anyway. The way you're thinking of binding after the fingerboard is mounted works fine. I bind my fingerboards after they're mounted on the neck and have been shaped to the neck outline, but the back of the neck still square and the fingerboard is not radiused. I use a rebate bit in the router table to cut a ledge where the binding sits. The bearing on the rebate bit follows the shape of the neck and both the width and depth of the ledge can be altered by either raising the bit (deeper ledge) or changing the bearing on the bit (wider/narrower ledge). Check us out at www.stonefieldmusic.com to see the results.

+AKDsLB1 thanks for the reply, I did end up trying it using a similar method as you described on the last guitar I built which was a neck-thru design and it worked just fine.

Alex Starbard (3 years ago) asked if it would be possible to fit binding to a fret board if the fret board were already bonded to the neck blank. Well, I would like to ask if it would be possible to fit binding to the fret board of a completely finished guitar (I asked one luthier on RU-vid and he thought not).
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 6 лет назад
I guess it could be done but would require a lot more time and effort than doing it before the guitar is completely built.

why not apply the glue on the binding instead of the fretboard
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 6 лет назад
I guess you could do that if you want.
@zzubuzz
@zzubuzz 9 лет назад
Use FCA binding glue from LMI, store it in freezer for long term storage, use small brush and 1 oz. bottle of acetone to thin or to re-activate any gaps. This is not my place to slam CA for this but lets say, I've had bad results trying it, and it is definitely not for body binding as any squeeze out will prevent pore filler coloration to absorb into the wood. Not going to say that CA is bad, I use it everyday for many, many luthier projects, more than can be put in a book but using it for binding, no way. Maybe just to fill a gap on loose binding but that's all. Besides, the vapors will burn your eyes and mucus membranes, accelorator can foam up leaving permanent fur.

@JoeKyser

I never heard acetone. I didn't use acetone for years and years. Why I never tried? Idk one day I ran out of glue but acetone. I would never consider anything else to be honest. It molds into the slot perfectly and Ive never had it come off
